09edd155j - Chalcocite pseudo. after Covellite - $ 7500 SOLD Butte, Silverbow County, Montana, USA small cabinet, 8.0 x 6.3 x 3.6 cm ex. August Pohndorf ex. Dr. Edward David ex. Gerald Herfurth
A shockingly scupltural cluster of fine crystals of LARGE covellites, that have been completely replaced by lustrous, jet black chalcocite. This is a MAJOR Butte specimen of some importance, just for the size alone. However, given the good aesthetics and nearly pristine condition, it is also a fine display quality specimen by any standard aside from the historical significance of the piece for the locale. It was in the Gerald Herfurth collection for 40 years, previously to Ed's purchase of it. Herfurth acquired it in 1958 from Pohndorf, a noted Colorado dealer and collector of the time. Verbally, it was said that this was found in 1883 and this was noted on Herfurth's card label (back side of the side shown). We know it is old, certainly, but if it really is THAT OLD, this is even more a piece of import.
D06-240 - Covellite and Pyrite - $ 1800 SOLD Leonard Mine, Butte, Silverbow County, Montana, USA miniature, 5.7 x 4.5 x 2.8 cm
This species reaches its zenith from this locality. Tabular, iridescent, purplish-blue, crystals of covellite, to 2.5 cm across, are associated with bright, golden, pyrite crystals. There is minor chipping on the right side of the covellite crystals, but this is trivial in context and it is in better shape than most others I have seen, plus has superb 3-dimensionality and displays better than the usual lumpy specimens we see. OLD CLASSIC,, now nearly impossible to get, especially in competition quality specimens!
DENV08-01 - Covellite - $ 1800 Summitville, Rio Grande County, Colorado, USA small cabinet, 7.3 x 5.9 x 4.1 cm
A very rich, and surprisingly colorful specimen of covellite from Colorado. Along with Butte in Montana, and perhaps the ancient locality in Sardinia, these are the world's great covellite lcoales. Good specimens in this size range, though, are few and far between. Colorado covellites have a reputation as being the ugly duckling compared to Butte material but not this one, with its incredible flashy multicolored iridescence. The piece has crystals to over an inch, and very good 3-dimensional relief (also unusual for the locale). Although, as with most covellites from all of these 3 major localities, there is some damage here and there, but this is certainly acceptable in the overall context for the size and quality. I regard this as one of the better Colorado examples I have seen, in this size range.
