8.4 x 5.3 x 4.4 cm. This is a fine example of the recently found Corundum specimens from Madagascar. I exchanged it directly from Dr. Federico Pezzotta who collected it while doing research there. It features several excellent, sharp, lustrous, prismatic, hexagonal crystals of a bluish-purple color (with slight pink zones) measuring up to 1.8 cm long perched smartly on schist matrix. Some of these specimens show an obvious color change from indoor lighting to sunlight, but I can't see much of a change in this piece.

1.6 x 0.7 x 0.5 cm (largest). A fine set of 7, doubly terminated, gemmy and striated sapphire crystals from the deposits at Ratnapura, Sri Lanka. I would classify four of the crystals as blues; one as colorless and blue; one as pink with inclusions; and one a lavender/blue. Classic crystals from this well-known locale. Total weight is 14.09 carats.

4.3 x 2.2 x 2.0 cm. The various gem tracts around Luc Yen have produced some impressive Sapphire crystals. This translucent, sharp, good-sized, orange-pink, hexagonal crystal is a great example of these newly found specimens.

8.7 x 4.8 x 4.5 cm. A gorgeous, gemmy and lustrous, bright pigeon-blood-red ruby crystal perched on the side of contrasting, glassy, marble matrix. The ruby is 1.5 cm long and note the complete-all-around, freestanding termination. A dramatic, colorful, and ruby crystal on matrix.

9.1 x 5.3 x 4.0 cm. For both size and quality, this is one of the very best examples of the recently found Corundum specimens from Madagascar. I exchanged it directly from Dr. Federico Pezzotta who collected it while doing research there. Some of these specimens show an obvious color change from indoor lighting to sunlight, this piece is no exception. It features a few excellent quality, sharp, lustrous, prismatic, hexagonal crystals of a bluish-purple color (almost pure blue in sunlight) measuring up to 2.7 cm long perched on schist matrix.

2.1 x 1.8 x 1.5 cm. A sharp and attractive hexagonal Corundum crystal with one normal termination at the base and one polished termination. This upper (polished) termination allows you to see the very complex zoning within the crystal, as well as appreciate the incredible adamantine luster and cat’s-eye effect that the crystal has. Ex. Charlie Key.

Corundum (Var: Ruby) from Mogok, Sagaing District, Mandalay Division, Burma (Myanmar) [db_pics/mdpics/MD-251603a.jpg]

8.4 x 7.8 x 6.4 cm. A rather large ruby crystal in matrix, measuring almost exactly 3 cm long, and perched beautifully in a well-trimmed matrix of marble. This ruby crystal is doubly-terminated, with sharp trigons at each end. Such large, equant rubies are rare. Usually they pinch off, break, or just do not form on one end. A large doubly-terminated crystal like this should be considered unusual and valued highly. The pigeon-blood red color is excellent and this is classic for Mogok material - now quite hard to come by because of both the embargo on this nations government and because easy mining has stripped away much of the deposit and it is harder now to find things such as this. Ex. Graw Collection.

4.3 x 3.5 x 2.6 cm. A textbook, hexagonal, tabular, doubly-terminated ruby crystal from Mysore, India. The crystal has superb, saturated, pigeon’s blood-red color. One end is crudely terminated and the other end looks sawed, but in fact, is terminated. This face really highlights the intense color saturation. Highly representative of the species and locality. Ex. Wes Parker Collection.

Corundum (Var: Sapphire) from Ratnapura, Ratnapura District, Sabaragamuwa Province, Sri Lanka [db_pics/mdpics/MD-256940a.jpg]

3.5 x 1.0 x 0.6 cm. A classic, doubly terminated, mostly colorless sapphire from Sri Lanka. This gemmy and lustrous crystal has textbook hexagonal form, is well-striated and has excellent, typically pronounced, stepped-growth faces. The termination areas are much gemmier, have a pretty purple tint, than the translucent, included, central portion of the crystal. Pristine and highly representative from the famous deposits at Ratnapura. Complete-all-around and pristine. Weighs 37.59 carats or 7.5 grams. Ex. Wes Parker Collection.

Corundum (Var: Ruby) from Mysore, Karnataka, India [db_pics/mdpics/MD-257239a.jpg]

10.8 x 4.7 x 4.7 cm. Indian rubies of this impressive size are very uncommon. This is one large ruby, weighing 583 grams or nearly 1.3 pounds. It is a complete, doubly-terminated floater with good luster and superb, saturated color of pigeon’s blood red. The hexagonal form is well-developed but elegant for such a large crystal, in that it tapers gently from the center to the terminations. The crystal looks like it has many stacked layers. It is a complete floater, intact all around even on the terminations. Moderate red fluorescence.

Corundum (Var: Ruby) from Jegdalek (Jagdalek; Jagdalak; Jagdalik) Ruby Mine, Sorobi District, Kabol (Kabul) Province, Afghanistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-257450a.jpg]

2.6 x 2.5 x 1.5 cm. This 1.5 x 1.4 x 0.9 cm ruby is blood red, with the top color more characteristic of a Mogok ruby than of Afghanistan (they tend to be a little pinker). It shows extremely fine crystal form, and is perched on contrasting marble matrix. Ex. Laura and Stevia Thompson Collection.
