Corundum (Var: Sapphire) from Luc Yen, Yenbai (Yen Bai) Province, Vietnam [db_pics/mdpics/MD-18901a.jpg]

beautiful, neon-pink and lustrous large sapphire crystal from Vietnam. The matrix includes plates of well-crystallized fuchsite on the back, a very rare green mica and vesuvianite. Though with a few rough edges and one termination etched, it is a remarkable example of this very unusual material . i still do not understand why it is pink sapphire and not ruby per se, but so the gem guys tell me. 4.8 x 4.0 x 3.0 cm

10.5 x 7.5 x 5.5 cm. A superb example of these strange sapphires collected in the mid 1990s by the Gochenour brothers, in Riverside County. This crystal is very aesthetically placed, and displayed in the matrix. These are significant and unusual big sapphire crystals for a US locality. Ex. Pala International/William Larson Collection.

Corundum (Var: Ruby) from Ganesh Himal deposit, Somdang, Rasuwa District, Bagmati Zone, Nepal [db_pics/mdpics/MD-195242a.jpg]

3.9 x 2.4 x 2.2 cm. Most large ruby corundum crystals seen these days come from Mysore in India, and they tend to be lot clunkier than these elegant and much rarer crystals from Nepal. The two long crystals (2.5 cm) are both terminated, and are a fine bright translucent pink. Ex. Elling Collection.

Corundum (Var: Ruby) from Jegdalek (Jagdalek; Jagdalak; Jagdalik) Ruby Mine, Sorobi District, Kabol (Kabul) Province, Afghanistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-197417a.jpg]

7.6 x 6.7 x 4.0 cm. An impressive ruby specimen from the classic ruby mines here which date back even to Roman times. Large crystals in matrix are rare. Large good crystals in matrix are almost unheard of. This is a rare example of such a piece, with a dominating 3 x 3 x 1.2-cm crystal sticking straight up and completely exposed on either side. The crystal is pristine and complete. Ex. Joe Freilich and Wall Mann Collections.

1.8 x 1.3 x 1.1 cm. This is a new ruby mine, and has been producing amazing bi-colored red/purple rough for the gem trade recently but few crystals have been preserved. This matrix hosts a sharp, gemmy, intensely colored crystal of nearly 1 cm. It is obviously twinned. In shifting lights, these change color and can show a bit of purple/blue color, even.

Beautiful and gemmy crystal with a lovely blue to amber color. The luster is EXCEPTIONALLY good, with the form and aesthetics on this crystal being exactly what you would want from any uncut sapphire. ( This is natural and unheated!) 2.1 x 1 x 1 cm

3.9 x 2.8 x 0.8 cm. In early 2008, a find of rubies was made near Winza, a remote village in the southeastern Dodoma, Tanzania. This specimen from the find is all corundum, though most of the specimen is opaque. However, on its surface, you can see where a 1-cm cluster of natural vibrant pink crystals has formed. Other small crystals have formed elsewhere on the surface.

Corundum (Var: Ruby) from Winza, Mpapwa, Mpapwa (Mpwampwa) District, Dodoma region, Tanzania [db_pics/mdpics/MD-215244a.jpg]

5.9 x 3.4 x 2.5 cm. Aesthetically crowning the top of a massive sapphire matrix are several lustrous and translucent, rose-red to cherry red crystals of ruby. A larger, very sharp ruby crystal to 1.25 cm in length dominates the middle. Impressive overall for the richness and the color, with a prominently displayed dominant crystal as well. The sharp habit and intense color of these crystals is unlike ruby from other localities, and immediately recognizable as something "new".

3.8 x 3.1 x 2.3 cm. Emplaced atop a matrix of gemmy, massive sapphire, are several lustrous and translucent, rose-red ruby crystals, to .7 cm in length. The overall effect of a small flower opening up is very pleasing. These crystals, though small, are gemmy and lustrous.
