2.1 x 1.8 x 1.5 cm. Here we have an excellent matrix Sapphire specimen that came out of Pakistan about 10 years ago. The locality at Ganesh is one of the oldest and more renown Sapphire/Ruby localities in the world, and has long produced some amazing specimens. The crystal on this particular specimen is a very sharp, lustrous, well formed, gemmy crystal of a fine purplish color aesthetically sitting atop Calcite matrix. Ex. Richard Kosnar Collection.
5.5 x 3.3 x 3.5 cm. A superb crystallized, waxy-lustrous Ruby of the likes you rarely see. The single crystal measures an incredible 2.2 x 1.7 x 2.2 cm, has superb luster, and deep red color and translucence that are excellent. The chevron pattern on the sharp flat termination adds beauty and interest. Ex. Charlie Key.
6.8 x 5.0 x 3.1 cm. The Rubies from Jagdalak are among some of the most well known and superbly crystallized Ruby specimens around. This specimen features a remarkably sharp, very well formed, semi-lustrous, purplish-pink color crystal group on a marble matrix. The crystal group measures 1.8 cm long. The crystals are not at all opaque as the majority of these specimens tend to be. The crystals also have good form with distinct basal pinacoids.
4.2 x 3.1 x 0.3 cm. Though this thin specimen looks like a slice from a larger ruby crystal, it is not: it is a very unusual, extremely flattened example of the ruby-corundum well-known from this locality - a complete and terminated crystal. The crystal has a deep maroon color, and an epitaxial plateau on one side. An old specimen, ex. Carlton Davis.
5.9 x 5.9 x 1.8 cm. On a stark white marble matrix is perched a large (2 x 1 centimeters), translucent, pretty lavender-pink crystal of corundum - call it ruby or sapphire, as you will, though the "proper" thing would be to call it sapphire as it leans more to lavender than deep pink or red. At any rate, it is complete all the way around, with fine sharp faces, and is beautifully exposed on the matrix from all sides. A very striking and impressive corundum specimen.
3.5 x 1.8 x 1.4 cm. This crystal is doubly-terminated and complete, a floater. However, unlike like most crystals from Sri Lankan gem gravels, it is not rounded on its edges, but is super-sharp, with textbook form. Both ends of the crystal are gemmy: one is colorless, the other a very desirable cornflower blue. Some iron staining in the middle gives a red due in between. Weighs 15 grams. Ex. George Elling Collection.
5.4 x 3.5 x 2.6 cm. This is a very large compound crystal of deep pink, translucent ruby-corundum. There are distinct faces all the way around the specimen. You can see a number of intergrown hexagonal subcrystals of various sizes, to about 2.5 cm across. Weighs 80 grams. Very old specimen probably from the early 1900s, ex George Elling Collection.
7.5 x 6.5 x 5.3 cm. This specimen features a good sized, somewhat lustrous, light purplish-red color Ruby crystal on white Calcite matrix. The color is decent for a Ruby from this locality, and it certainly has a distinct purplish hue. The crystal measures 2.5 cm long.
5.9 x 2.3 x 1.9 cm. This is an old-time corundum crystal from Africa. The large crystal has a rough surface, but very sharply-defined hexagonal form. Both terminations are intact. Ex. Carlton Davis Collection.
3.4 x 3.3 x 2.3 cm. At approximately 1 inch in height, this is a fairly good-sized ruby crystal by any standard. For Vietnam, where most rubies are reabsorbed and somehow lumpy it seems, it is of exceptional sharpness. The termination is complete all around, and the crystal is freestanding from the matrix completely and fully exposed on all sides for half its height. The termination is slightly stepped, but sharp and complete, and also lustrous. The surface is waxy in lustre. The color is a slightly pink-red hue.
3.2 x 3.2 x 2 cm. A sharp, very well-defined single Ruby crystal (2.3 cm) in Calcite with Phlogopite. The color is very good, and the tip is gemmy and terminated. Ex. Charlie Key.
5.7 x 3.7 x 3.3 cm. A sculptural upright, cluster of beautiful pink sapphire crystals stacked one upon the other from now-classic finds at Luc Yen, Vietnam. These sharp, gemmy and lustrous crystals have some beautifully striated faces.
3.5 x 2.5 x 2.2 cm. A fantastic, complete and doubly-terminated, huge crystal of purple sapphire (corundum) from the finds in Madagascar. This wonderful floater crystal weighs 55 grams. It has fine luster both on the prism faces and terminations. As with other crystals from this find, it is very slightly translucent to opaque.
6.2 x 4.5 x 2.1 cm. A gemmy and lustrous, beautifully color saturated, 2.6 cm, ruby crystal cluster jauntily perch atop marble matrix on this excellent and showy specimen from Jagdalak, Afghanistan.
1.3 x 0.3 x 0.3 cm. This small sapphire has superb color. And, it is doubly-terminated and has great form, as well. This was found in the stream gravels of Sri Lanka (Ceylon), the prime locality for sapphires.
