A VERY RARE somewhat gemmy, translucent, SHARP, mogok sapphire. Most specimen sapphires are from Sri Lanka while in Mogok, rubies rule (it is "the land of rubies" after all!) 2.5 x 2.0 x 1.5 cm
A gemmy, translucent, ruby crystal with thin hexagonal plates comprising a very sculptural specimen. Elegant, rare, and VERY appealing! 2.5 x 1.0 x 0.4 cm
GORGEOUS, PIGEON-BLOOD RED, ruby in contrasting matrix! IN person this has a wonderful classic waxy lustre and much more intensity. Such pieces in matrix are rare, and Bill kept two of them in the suite. 3.2 x 2.5 x 1.7 cm

A dramatic, large, example of these strange sapphires collected in the mid 1990s by the Gochenour brothers, in Riverside County (OK, strictly speaking not in San Diego County but hey, its close enough and the same basic geology!). This crystal is very aesthetically placed, and displayed in the matrix. It has, as most do, a few clean repairs stabilised by glue, but the price is also adjusted accordingly and in context all of them were like that. These are significant and unusual big sapphire crystals for a US locality! It is one of the bigger ones... 17 cm tall and among the finest found in this remarkable onetime find !!! ex Larson collection

The ruby is 3.0 cm tall. When backlit, it absolutely GLOWS in a case! Rarely do you get such large examples of rubies from Afghanistan and usually they are broken , when you do. A crystal of such size is EXCEEDINGLY rare....and so nicely perched, almost beyond expectation! This lovely corundum var. ruby, perched on white calcite, is lustrous, translucent, with wonderful "pigeons blood" red color saturation. This has recently proven to be one of the worlds greatest localities for fine specimen rubies. This must have been one of the earliest specimens to trickle out, and was surely prized as such a rar epiece! Even today, for the aesthetics overall and size of the crystal, it remains an oustanding specimen that is not dated at all.
Star Sapphires are among the most highly sought after of all the Sapphire varieties. These stones are cut when thin, fibrous inclusions are are oriented inside of the Sapphire crystal at the correct angle to properly show off the "legs" of the star. When these inclusions are numerous enough to make the stone translucent or opaque, they allow light to be reflected in such a way that a star floats across the top of the stone with movement. It is an amazing phenomenon that is only seen in a few gems around the world. The actual "legs" of the star in this stone are fairly sharp, with no breaks and decent consistency. The stone also exhibits a beautiful light blue-purple color. A great Star Sapphire gem from one of the premier localities for the material in the world.
Sapphires is one of those gems that comes in virtually every color of the rainbow. With that said, the most recognizable color of Sapphires by far is blue. I've seen literally every shade of blue known to man exhibited in Sapphires, and they are still some of the most popular, durable, colorful and highly sought after gems on the planet. This stone has a beautiful deep "royal blue" color which shows up in strong light. The stone is virtually free of inclusions and has an "Oval" cut.

I've seen literally every shade of blue known to man exhibited in Sapphires, and they are still some of the most popular, durable, colorful and highly sought after gems on the planet. This stone has a beautiful light blue color, and actually is a bit of a bicolor stone as it shows colorless areas as well. The stone is virtually eye clean and has a Step Cushion cut, which is not common for Sapphires.
Bicolor Sapphires are not common on the market, and this attractive little gem is a good representative stone from Sri Lanka. For the most part the gem is yellow in color, but hosts a few small blue patches creating a true bicolor stone. Sapphires are well known for occuring in virtually every color of the rainbow, but the bicolor gems are hard to find. This VVS clarity stone has a Step Pear cut, and would make a nice addition to any Sapphire suite.

Sapphires is one of those gems that comes in virtually every color of the rainbow. With that said, this stone is nearly colorless (it has a slight golden overtone). It is a very gemmy, and unsually faceted bead of Sapphire, which is rather rare in my experience. The stone looks very attractive in the sunlight. I would certainly say this stone is a "collector" stone for the size, and unusual quality of the gem. A good Sapphire to add to a suite of gems, especially if you're into adding unusual stones to your collection.
