Incredibly gemmy ruby crystal, perched on matrix! This redefines what you might expect in a gem ruby specimen, particularly on matrix. Seldom are they GEMMY as opposed to "gemmy"... 2.1 x 1.5 x 1.2 cm
Ex Bill Larson collection. Attached on one side by marble matrix, this is a dramatic, doubly-terminated, translucent, deepest pigeon’s blood red, ruby crystal. It has natural wet lustre...its har dto photo both the lustre and color so you have two different shots to emphasize each, if you can combine them more or less in your head. The crystal is 1.3 cm in length. It is well balanced on the matrix. The ruby crystal with its color and highlights represents the very finest quality that Mogok has ever produced, and this was stashed in Bill Larson's collection because of that. BETTER IN PERSON and when backlit, its amazing....probably better off displayed horizontally with the doubly-terminated crystal atop, but either way is good... 1.5 x 1.3 x 1.3 cm
1.7 x 1.4 x 1.1 cm. A beautiful, classic, pigeon’s blood-red ruby crystal attached to a shard of matrix from Mogok. This crystal has sharp crystal form, high lustre, gemminess and vibrant red color. Ex. Sam Nasser Collection.
Not a gem crystal, of course, but this IS technically a ruby (red corundum) that is really huge for having such a sharp euhedral form! It is complete all around and on both sides - just a REALLY impressive corundum crystal! Weighs 259 grams! 7.8 x 5.3 x 2.8cm
This impressive display specimen is a large matrix ruby, with a 3 cm crystal in matrix. Obviously not a gem crystal, or it would be unfathomably valuable, but this IS a ruby crystal, and a euhedral one at that - complete all around, with sharp faces, on matrix! It also has good translucency when backlit and the good color, if not gemminess. For the locality, its very sharp! 10.7 x 9.0 x 7.0cm
A LARGE, sharp, hexagonal, doubly terminated, rust-brown corundum crystal from a classic South Africa locality, Zoutpansberg. Classic material with three, fine old labels. Ex Richard Hauck Collection. 5.2 x 4.5 x 4.1 cm
A large, euhedral, moderately lustrous, doubly terminated, dark gray corundum crystal from the famous Zoutpansberg District of South Africa. Classic, old-time material with an old Schortman"s label and undamaged. Ex Richard Hauck Collection. 4.6 x 3.0 x 2.9 cm
Lustrous, platy, green fuchsite liberally covers massive ruby matrix on this classic, old-time specimen from South Africa. Fuchsite is the chrome-rich variety of muscovite, which has bright red fluorescence. The piece comes with a Hugh Ford label, a prominent United States dealer from the 1920s to early 1950s. Ex Carl Davis Collection. 6.9 x 4.5 x 2.2 cm
Most sapphire crystals are long prismatic and terminate in pyramids. This glowing, hot-bubble-gum pink, translucent and super-lustrous, sapphire is really unique and special! It is short and prismatic, and doubly terminated - a floater all around! The specimen clearly exhibits hexagonal shape. This could be cut into a cabochon, just for its color. If transparent, this specimen would sell for tens of thousands of dollars. As a specimen, it will leap out amongst any corundums, rubies, sapphires. It is REALLY intense...the rightmost pic is more accurately colored and even that pales in comparison to the actual piece. Out of hundreds of these I have seen, this ONE is most special. 3.8 x 3 x 1.7 cm
Massive, white, calcite is studded with gemmy, very lustrous, pigeon blood, crystals of corundum var. ruby. The largest ruby crystal is .7 cm across. Recent mining has exposed larger crystals but this is obviously a very old piece, and probably one of the few matrix rubies in the mineral market at the time when Pete bought it! 5 x 4.5 x 3.5 cm
The ruby is 3.0 cm tall. When backlit, it absolutely GLOWS in a case! Rarely do you get such large examples of rubies from Afghanistan and usually they are broken , when you do. A crystal of such size is EXCEEDINGLY rare....and so nicely perched, almost beyond expectation! This lovely corundum var. ruby, perched on white calcite, is lustrous, translucent, with wonderful ”pigeons blood” red color saturation. This has recently proven to be one of the world’s greatest localities for fine specimen rubies. This must have been one of the earliest specimens to trickle out, and was surely prized as such a rar epiece! Even today, for the aesthetics overall and size of the crystal, it remains an oustanding specimen that is not dated at all. 3.9 x 2.9 x 2 cm
A SUPERB, gemmy, doubly terminated sapphire crystal from Ratnapura, Sri Lanka. Ex Irv Brown TN Collection. Small, yes, but gorgeous riveting color! 1.6 x 0.5 x 0.4 cm
Unusual cyclic-twinned ruby crystal, with a poor photo I admit. BETTER in person! 1.4 x 1.4 x 0.8 cm
Translucent, and with gorgeous rich color, this complete crystal is better in person! 2.9 x 0.9 x 0.6 cm
2.0 x 1.5 x 1.5 cm
