Corundum (Var: Ruby) from Karnataka, India [db_pics/mdpics/MD-40039a.jpg]

This is one large corundum var. ruby, weighing just over one pound. It is a complete, doubly-terminated floater with good luster and superb, saturated color of pigeon’s blood red. The hexagonal form is well-developed but elegant for such a large beast, in that it tapers gently from teh center to the terminations. The crystal IS a complete floater, in tact all around even on the terminations. There have been literally thousands of these available over the years but few as large or as good as this one. 9.4 x 5.5 x 3.5 cm

For both size and quality, this is one of the very best examples of the recently found bicolored Corundums from Madagascar. I exchanged it directly from Dr. Federico Pezzotta who collected it while doing research there. It features a 1.0 cmlong crystal perched smartly on matrix. These corundums are generally called sapphires on the market but to me, I cannot decide which to label them as. They go varying shades of red/purple and even to blue-purple depending on which lighting source you use to look at them. The effect is not subtle, either - its pretty obvious. 6.0 x 3.8 x 2.7cm

The pigeon’s blood color in corundum is called ruby. All other colors are sapphire. THIS piece has THE color! The deeply colored ruby, 1.5 cm across, is translucent and highly lustrous. The crystal, 360-degrees complete all around, is aesthetically perched on contrasting white marble. 2.1 x 1.4 x 1.3 cm
