Ruby (Chatoyant) from Mogok District, Burma [db_pics/pics/04edd97ja.jpg]

This is a superb single crystal of ruby, unusually well formed in hexagonal shape with waxy lustre. It probably has considerable value as carving rough because of the natural chatoyance, in which the color shifts between more red and more lavender in different lighting. It is opaque, but has zones of translucency. My catalogue shows that Ed paid $7500 to Bill Larson for this in 2000, to pry it out of his personal Burma collection. A better value, now, amortized in the collection!

This specimen has multiple crystals with the juiciest, waxy red lustre and color you could ask for in a ruby. They GLOW with color. Each cluster is about an inch across. The striations on the crystal faces increase the reflection of light, too, as an added bonus. I have seen many rubies from here trickle out the last 5 years, but few with such overall impact as this. Comes with custom base.

It is hard to believe all these photos show the same piece, but they do - it is highly sculptural and decorative, different from each angle. This is a splendid, free-form etched ruby crystal that exhibits SUPERB waxy luster and translucence, along with an incredible rich red-purple color, commonly known as "pigeon's blood red" and classic for the district. In fact, this is the premier desired color of historic rubies from this famous "Valley of Rubies" and pieces of this color satuyration would , and could still, be used to make excellent cabochon jewels in particular. Portions of the crystal are so gemmy that facetted stones could be cut, as well. The ruby mass is 23 grams. This is an impactful specimen, and a floater, complete all around. From the Burma collection of "Burma Bill" Larson, who has for decades brought out gems and then minerals as this region opened up to the trade in specimens.

Emplaced aesthetically, high on a white marble matrix, is a waxy, very lustrous and gemmy ruby crystal which measures 1.5 cm in length. The color, a classic pigeon's blood red, and the gemminess, are both outstanding. In fact, this is the premier desired color of historic rubies from this famous "Valley of Rubies" and pieces of this color satuyration would , and could still, be used to make excellent cabochon jewels in particular. For added effect, there is also a crystallized, translucent, untwinned titanite crystal measuring 1.5 cm across situated on the marble next to the ruby - a rare combination! The mass of the whole specimen is 33 grams. From the Burma collection of "Burma Bill" Larson, who has for decades brought out gems and then minerals as this region opened up to the trade in specimens.

An intergrown cluster of lustrous and gemmy, pigeon's blood red ruby crystals, individually to 1.5 cm across but overall exceeding an inch in one dimension. The crystal appears to be doubly-terminated and is nearly a floater with just a small point of contact on the back. The mass is 23 grams. This is the choice color for ruby carving rough and is today in high demand, with most specimens selling to the Chinese buyers . From the Burma collection of "Burma Bill" Larson, who has for decades brought out gems and then minerals as this region opened up to the trade in specimens.

Emplaced beautifully on crystallized white calcite is a single, doubly-terminated, ruby crystal measuring 1.5 cm in length. The incredibly deep color saturation of the most vivid pigeon's blood red color is amazing, plus it has fine luster and translucence. This is a calibre of ruby hard to get in the market now, as most goes to the Chinese for carving. From the Burma collection of "Burma Bill" Larson, who has for decades brought out gems and then minerals as this region opened up to the trade in specimens.

a very pretty, deep red ruby of classic "pigeon-blood" color, perched nicely in contrasting matrix! The ruby shows exquisite form and has the best color. It is somewhat translucent but not gemmy per se (as these tend to be). The crystal measures 2 x 0.8 x 0.7 cm in size

This specimen features a SHARP crystal of ruby, unusual for the species in its tapering point. It is 1.5 cm tall and GLOWS. The color in person is a more typical "ruby red" than in the photos, and the glow of the crystal when backlit is striking.

D06-236 - Sapphire (twinned!) - SOLD

Sapphire (twinned!) from Eheliyagoda, near Ratnapura, Sri Lanka [db_pics/pics/d06-236a.jpg]

This heart-shaped twin of sapphire is truly spectacular, much better in person than on the web. This type of twinning is extremely rare in corundum . The luster, transparency, and pastel blue color are enhanced by the definitive twinning plane and the directional change of the striations on either side. The very minor chipping on one termination does not affect the beauty and rarity of this specimen. TRULY a unique specimen in many ways, for the gem collector!

A VERY GEMMY, intensely colored sapphire of high calibre! It has not just color - you can get color if you look - but also LUSTRE. It is that combination of the two that takes this to the next level and makes it a stellar thumbnail! IT IS MUCH MORE GEMMY IN PERSON!
