Root-beer-colored , classic barrel-shaped cordierite crystals to almos t2 inches. Perhaps a piece only a musem could love, but SO significant for this turn-of-the-1900s locality, for both the stellar condition and the overall size of the plate. I have never seen the like for sale.

MCW60 - Cordierite in Anhydrite with Chalcopyrite - $ 250
Ruttan Mine , Leaf Rapids, Manitoba, Canada
small cabinet, 6.2 x 5.5 x 3.9 cm
ex.  Ian Nicklin

Sorry, we have no images of this specimen at present.

Miniature, 3.5 x 3.5 x 2.5 cm Cordierite is one of those species condemned to exist in only ugly specimens of largely crude crystals. Here, however, from a locality I hadn't even heard of before, we have a wild exception to the trend! These robust crystals to 1.2 cm in size have a jet black color, waxy lustre, and excellent crystal form! They are embedded and partially excavated from anhydrite matrix, with golden specks of massive chalcopyrite to set off the crystals even more starkly..

6.2 x 5.2 x 5.0 cm. A LARGE, sharp, complete all-around, orthorhombic cordierite crystal. This CLASSIC, old-time, lustrous brown crystal is from the famous finds at Richmond, New Hampshire. The back is contacted, but is not damaged, per se and part of the crystal surface has altered to pinite, a pseudomorph after silicate minerals, especially cordierite. Ex. Ed Ruggiero Collection, who purchased this fine piece from New York dealer Larry Conklin in 1976.

8.6 x 6.4 x 3.7 cm. This is a historic, important US locality. I have not, however, seen a display-worthy specimen of cordierite from here before. This specimen is typical to my eye of Newfoundland material for color, a shimmering iridescence, and composed of micaceous crystal plates layered one against the other. Ex. Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences Collection.

12 x 10 x 7 cm. Cordierite from this locality sets the standard for the species. Unlike the ugly material from most places, it is actually pretty here - sometimes. It has a waxy brown shoe-polish look to the surface on the best specimens, such as this one. This was collected by Bob Whitmore in the 1970s and is a highly significant specimen for its isolated, beer-can sized crystal standing straight up from matrix. Museum quality, for this rarity and important study species. Ex. Robert Whitmore Collection.

9.1 x 6.5 x 3.0 cm. Haddam, Connecticut is a historic, important US locality and display-worthy specimens of cordierite from here are very rare and are rarely available. This specimen is typical to my eye of Newfoundland material for color, a shimmering iridescence of purplish-grayish-greenish, and composed of micaceous crystal plates layered one against the other. Comes with an old, faded, Wards label with a Grieger attribution. John Grieger was a well-known California dealer and collector prior to World War II. Ex. Mullane Collection.

RLKG10-199 - Iolite (Cordierite) - $ 360
Burma
thumbnail, 13.6 x 6.3 mm ; 3.60 carats

Iolite (Cordierite) - BurmaIolite (Cordierite) - Burma

Iolite translated from Greek literally means "violet stone". These gems are sometimes known as "water Sapphire" in various corners of the gem world, but it is truly gem grade Cordierite. Iolite is strongly pleochroic and shows a strong blue color one direction, a violet color another direction, and a yellowish color in the third direction. This gem is from the Burma, where some of the nicest Iolites are being mined these days. The stone is virtually eye clean with an "Emerald" cut, and shows a good color change when rotated on its different axis. A very attractive, larger stone for the material.

A major, huge cordierite crystal cluster from this classic old locality. More importantly, its actually fairly attractive, so far as they go! Ex Warren Johansson collection, with a label dated 1943. Although not the most favorite mineral of most folks, I do think this is one of the better specimens in the update.
