Copper from Andacollo Mine, Andacollo, Elqui Province, Coquimbo Region, Chile [db_pics/mdpics/MD-20638a.jpg]

This specimen was from a small but well-studied and known find of crystallized copper with a microlayer of GOLD admixed, that gives it a brassy sheen! It is not crystallized gold, but gold is there. There were not many specimens at all, and you would have a hard time finding another, but here it is. This came to us out of an old collection. 6.7 x 3.5 x 3 cm

4.2 x 2.7 x 0.5 cm. A beautiful "fan" of completely crystallized copper from the Itauz Mine, which as turned out some of the finest crystallized coppers in the world over the past decade at times when the strip mining comes back around full-circle to the specimen-bearing zone. This looks almost like a tree or bush - and its all crystal.

Copper that is coated by microscopic grains of gold, giving it a shimmer and shine that is unusually bright . Famous but rare old material from Bisbee! This one is a nice, displayable miniature in addition to being interesting for the association. (this specimen has been verified as legit by Les Presmyk) 3.7 x 2.6 x 2.3 cm

This is a VERY large and dramatic specimen of one of the great US classics: copper in and on calcite crystals from the old copper districts of the Upper Peninsula. It has real presence and a deep color to it that, combined with the aesthetics of how it has been trimmed for display, really pack a punch and give you a lot of value for your money in one of these (in my opinion, anyhow!). The crystal measures a full 3 INCHES in height, is symmetrically formed, and is complete all around except for a small bit of contact in the lower rear face and a few very trivial spots of cleavage at some of the faces to the periphery. The crystal is anchored firmly to, and in fact enveloping the top of, the matrix. Interestingly, bits of leaf copper actually STICK OUT OF this crystal, and are not simply confined as usual to hanging out internally! A MAJOR specimen! Comes with custom-made lucite display base. The Cranbrook label with the Pollard donation is key here. Captain Joseph Pollard was active in the Keweenaw in the 19th century, having arrived from Cornwall in 1858. He worked from 1860-1910 at Clumet and Hecla. The collection remained intact and on display in the family home for over 70 years, until his grandsons Dan and Dean Pollard donated his collection to Cranbrook on July 12, 1984, in memory of their grandfather. 10.5 x 8.3 x 4 cm

Wayne Thompson marketed the high-end pieces from this amazing one-time find at the Santa Rita, with all specimens found in a single erratic boulder by Stan Esbenshade who laboriously etched them out. Through Wayne, Gene received his first choice of these coppers, and this one for size and thickness really is set above most others as one of the most significant pieces for its size range in the find. It also features some of the largest crystals at all from this boulder, though they are intergrown as you can see and not isolated on stalks as with several others of the larger pieces (several of which are repaired, while this is not). It is a hefty, solid specimen that is complete all around which is VERY unusual because the copper in this boulder filled fracture seams and thus most copper specimens from the find are heavily contacted on at least one face, or are skinny. To indicate how stout this piece is, it has a weight of 180 grams. 7 x 3 x 2 cm

I am gonna try, but i know i cannot really describe in words how breathtakingly intricate and attractive this specimen really is! Broken Hill is one of the great classic localties for coppers. Copper "feathers" are among the most treasured though they are scarce on the market because of both age and fragility as well as the fact that so few good ones were found. This one is the best "feather"-type example I have seen for sale for this size range, and consists of an unbelieveably aesthetic cluster of herringbone-type copper crystals (spinel-twins with elongated c axes) perched delicately on thicker, untwinned crystals. The natural patina of dark green color is not only attractive, but starkly contrasts the piece to other coppers and makes it all the more dramatic in any suite of coppers, to my mind (though certainly it is easy enough to strip off this patina and have another bright and shiny piece, i think it a shame to do so!). The stalks of the 3 feathers are a bit "bendable" , the piece is sturdy enough once put on display. Spectacular display specimen! 6.5 cm

A VERY solid and stout cluster of intergrown spinel-twinned crystals, unusually thick for this locality and reminiscent of the New Mexico material found a few years' back. This specimen features a central spinel twin surrounded by hoppered crystals of other forms, and is naturally clean on one side and naturally dark (coated with a thin layer of tenorite easily enough removed if desired) on the other, making for interesting contrast. Perfect floater! 4.5 x 1.5 x 1 cm

A remarkable matrix specimen that is, clearly in context of all that was shown at Tucson (with several other dealers as well), one of the very best matrix specimens and certainly one of the best miniatures in the find. This specimen has a dramatic cluster of intergrown herringbone and thick spinel twins, reaching for the sky and elegantly rising off the matrix. 4 x 3 x 2.5 cm

A sharp "spear" composed of 3 elongated spinel twins connected in a stepped pattern by smaller spinel-twinned crystals , and with yet another generation of spinel-twinned crystals shooting off perpendicularly to the main axis of growth, but even then oriented only in one direction ...thus creating a VERY odd, very sculptural, cityscape effect. This is one of the very finest (for its size) of the herringbone-type coppers ON MATRIX from this amazing find! It soncists of very finely-crystallized "feathers" of iridescent copper perched delicately but firmly on gray rock matrix at the base. Each end of each feather sticks out, freestanding, into the air. NO DAMAGE and tremendous aesthetics make this a significant copper, not merely just a good locality piece. BETTER IN PERSON, of course... 8.5 x 3 x 1.5 cm

Copper, Cuprite from Chino Mine (Santa Rita Pit; Santa Rita Mine), Santa Rita, Santa Rita District, Grant Co., New Mexico, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-208782a.jpg]

6.0 x 4.5 x 1.2 cm. Santa Rita is a today a ghost town. In its day, it was a great copper locality, having been mined all the way back to 1803 - its original name was Santa Rita del Cobre (Santa Rita of the Copper). So, there is no telling from which period this specimen came. It is a branching, dendritic crystallized specimen with small crystals of deep red cuprite richly ranged along its branches. Ex. Dave Stoudt Collection.
