7.1 x 5.4 x 3.2 cm. Butte covellite is an American classic. Here, the covellite has been replaced (pseudomorphed) by sparkly, black chalcocite. This very special old-timer was in the collection of Gene Meieran, in his sulfide suite. This was likely mined in the 1950s-1960s.

3.0 x 2.1 x 1.4 cm. Sharp, lightly iridescent, purplish-blue chalcocite crystals form an excellent specimen from the famous mid-1990s finds at the Flambeau Mine of Wisconsin. The large, isolated, free-standing crystals is 1.0 cm. The exact mine location is 100 Level, Fogg Pocket.

Chalcocite from Flambeau Mine, Ladysmith, Rusk Co., Wisconsin, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-18897a.jpg]

From the Barlow Collection, this specimen features two very large, super-sharp crystals that are intergrown very attractively at a right angle. Nice golden metallic luster. Probably the best example in the auctions to date of isolated, large, well-defined crystals. There are a couple of incomplete crystals on the back, although you can’t see them easily from the frontal display view as shown. Barlow was one of the big funders of the mining of these chalcocites, and this was one of his personal pieces. 4.5 x 3.3 x 3.3 cm

A top-notch, finely crystallized chalcocite with a most attractive silver-blue metallic sheen, and SHARP crystals to 1.5 cm. The specimen is complete most of the way around, with only a small area of contact in back, making it possible to display it from any number of directions, as there are good crystals everywhere. Ex. Barlow Collection Better in person! 5.5 x 4.5 x 3.5 cm

3.6 x 2.7 x 1.5 cm. Cornwall chalcocite, mined in the heyday of the mid to late 1800s, still sets a high standard for the species that is seldom matched. These crystals are sharp discs, to 1.3 cm in size (half-inch). Ex Ed David collection, purchased from Herb Obodda in 2001.

A superb, old-time, classic specimen of sharp, striated, lustrous, dark metallic-gray chalcocite prisms richly covering the drusy quartz-covered matrix plate from the Bristol Copper Mine, Connecticut. 100+ years old. The accompanying Larry Conklin label states that the piece was purchased from Ward’s in 1940.

11.5 x 6.0 x 3.1 cm. A fine and important cabinet combination pseudomorph specimen from the Butte District of Montana. Matte-black chalcocite pseudomorphs after covellite plates blanket the contrasting matrix of mirror-bright, brass-yellow pyrite. A scattering of well-placed, lustrous quartz crystals is a beautiful accent.

This is quite simply one of the finest chalcocite miniatures of its habit that I have had from this important find, with sharp hexagonal crystals stacked upon each other. It has excellent lustre and bright metallic colors that run iridescently through purple, red, and gold hues. The piece is complete all around - a FLOATER! It can be displayed from any number of orientations. Anyways, what I am trying to say is that it is really friggin' good... 4.5 x 4 x 1.75 cm

8.0 x 5.9 x 2.4 cm. An outstanding, old-time Butte combination and pseudomorph specimen from the Leonard Mine. The highlight of this fine piece is the top-left cluster of chalcocite after sharp covellite blades. The quartz plate matrix is stunningly and richly sprinkled with highly lustrous, striated, brass-yellow pyrite cuboctahedrons. This is classic combination material from the renowned locale and is from the Dr. Miguel Romero Collection formerly on display at the University of Arizona Science Center for the last 12 years.
