A shockingly scupltural cluster of fine crystals of LARGE covellites, that have been completely replaced by lustrous, jet black chalcocite. This is a MAJOR Butte specimen of some importance, just for the size alone. However, given the good aesthetics and nearly pristine condition, it is also a fine display quality specimen by any standard aside from the historical significance of the piece for the locale. It was in the Gerald Herfurth collection for 40 years, previously to Ed's purchase of it. Herfurth acquired it in 1958 from Pohndorf, a noted Colorado dealer and collector of the time. Verbally, it was said that this was found in 1883 and this was noted on Herfurth's card label (back side of the side shown). We know it is old, certainly, but if it really is THAT OLD, this is even more a piece of import.

Like most Tsumeb lovers, Charlie seems to have a love for tennantite. What were once crystals of prismatic, well formed, Chalcocite , have since been transformed into pseudomorphs of eerie black Tennantite. The crystals reach 7.0 cm in length, making this a major Tsumeb pseudomorph and of a good display quality, too!
CORN04 - Chalcocite - $ 1950 St. Ives Consols, Cornwall, England miniature, 4.5 x 3.8 x 2.1 cm ex. Ed Ruggiero
This historical old specimen, once in the possession of Lord Tynes in 1876 (according to a probably mid-1900s attached label from a collector named D. Bury), is different than many St. Ives chalcosites I have seen; in that the lustrous, black, crystals are bladed, to 4.0 cm in length, rather than the standard, short or long prismatic crystals showing flat terminations. These look most unusual, and the result is more sparkle and flash than you normally see in a Cornish chalcocite. The lustre is incredible, jhust brilliantly jet black ...it is a stunning, slightly iridescent surface.

Extremely well-formed, fat crystals to almost 2 cm! This piece has TEXTBOOK crystallography and looks so good it might as well have been carved. I haven't seen one this fine , of this habit, save in books from the early 1800s such as Sowerby and Rashleigh. This exquisite miniature is complete all around and nearly pristine....probably because it has been in a box for over 150 years, as part of the collection of Traverso, a major Italian collector of the early 1800s.

ex. Robert Rich Collection This unusual speicmen hosts both stereotypical spaceship-like disc-like crystals of chalcocite at the bottom , and also several unusual large and striated crystals rising above ! In person, it is much more dramatic, and the "v" shape you see in the middle is probably indicative of twinning between the two main crystals , rising vertically from the base. A most unusual piece, very aesthetic, and more 3-dimensional in person.

A magnificent, pristine, sculptural cluster of chalcocites showing a classic "nail head habit" from Cornwall. The technical term for the rare shape of the crystals is tapered pseudohexagonal. This piece was exchanged by collector Phil Scalisi from the Fred Pough collection , and is probably from the late 1800s heyday here

A choice group of sharp pseudo-hexagonal chalcocites, showing the classic style for this mine. The largest crystal of the two majors is 1.8 cm across. Truly of outstanding quality, this is a world class thumbnail. Probably from the late 1800s heyday here

This is an exquisite, highly sculptural, and extremely splendent, thumbnail of chalcocite, a copper sulfide. The dark gray crystals are sharply doubly terminated, to 1.5 cm across. They have awesome lustre! This has to rank as one of the finest thumbnails of the species.

A sharp heart-shaped twin (1.4 cm), of rare habit, surmounts this small miniature matrix specimen. There is damage elsewhre on teh specimen and also a small tiny ding on one side of the twinned crystal , which detracts and has lowered the price several-fold...but it is still a great little reference specimen for this new find , showing a super twin habit!

This textbook crystal is the most robust crystal BY FAR that I have seen from the find, with a sharp, fat wedge-shaped form, and complete terminations on all sides. In fact, it is even a floater! The bottom is microcrystallized, and so this is literally complete all around. This is a world-class chalcocite! Ifg it were fro mConnecticut or Tsumeb, it would cost 2-3 times as much, though. For habit, however, it is really quite unique...the robust form of the best Tsumeb chalcocite I have seen, but with lustre of a Bristol chalcocite.

This specimen is a competition-level, complete-all-around STUNNING miniature, with a cluster of three intergrown crystals to 3 cm long, perched on a small knob of matrix. It is STUNNING, visually, both for the lustre and the sharp geometry of the piece. Complex bevelled terminations throw off reflections in ever direction. There is no damage except a teeny contact atop and a few contacts or breaks on the bottom peripheral crystals, while the major crystals are not only upright, but astoundingly 3-dimensional (more so in person!). This is a MAJOR miniature for the species, to my eye better in absolute quality than some Bristol or Wisconsin locallity specimens I have seen (and sold myself) for much more money over the years

SUPER SHARP crystals to 1.7 cm, with a wet-looking,waxy lustre, jet out from this knob of matrix to make a very "sexy" miniature specimen! This is a stunning piece, with 3-dimensionality and aesthetics that make it stand out among any chalcocites. But for a new locale, it is all the more special.
