Celestine from Rockport Quarry, Rockport, Alpena Co., Michigan, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-118618a.jpg]

13.0 x 5.4 x 1.8 cm. This is an American CLASSIC, and very hard to find now in good specimens! This one came out of the collection of Ed David, and has just about everything you would want in one of these wonderful blue celestites. First, it is VERY large. It also has perfect tabular form with pretty bevels all around. It shows fine transparency for one of these, with the characteristic subtle blue-grey color and the luster is superb.

Celestine, Sulphur from Agrigento Province, Sicily, Italy [db_pics/mdpics/MD-118855a.jpg]

11.5 x 10.5 x 6.0 cm. An old-time, classic and showy CABINET specimen of glassy, translucent crystals of colorless celestine in pagoda-like clusters with chisel terminations. The very 3-dimensional celestine clusters RICHLY cover the sulfur matrix, which surprisingly, has only trivial bruising on a few crystals for such a large and old piece. This classic specimen is from Agrigento, Sicily and is from the George Elling Collection.

7.9 x 6.4 x 6.1 cm. Clay Center is known for both its gemmy brown fluorites and for these fine clusters of ice-blue celestine crystals. This is a cluster of sharp, translucent crystals, most to 1.5 cm, but one of which is a large tabular crystal at the edge of the cluster measuring 4 cm across!

3.2 x 3.2 x 2.8 cm. Unbelievable and extremely rare layered botryoidal growth of pearly silver-blue Celestine. The luster is incredible, and the aesthetics have to be seen to be believed.

8.2 x 6.4 x 4.2 cm. A rich specimen, and an old one, from Clay Center, well-known for its celestines (in a variety of forms). In this case, you have flat, tabular, transparent crystals to 4 cm, intergrown with hundreds of small celestine crystals of an entirely different form.

Celestine from Maybee, Monroe Co., Michigan, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-121933b.jpg]

6.9 x 5.6 x 2.6 cm. Maybee celestines are American classics. The crystals on this specimen have just the most superb glassy luster to them - and the typical icy grey-blue for the celestines from this locality (as well as the chisel terminations). This is a shard of matrix that broke off in the pocket, so that it actually has crystals all over it - front and back, and even the edges! It is a floater!

7.4 x 6.2 x 4.2 cm. Very sharp crystals to 1.3 cm, isolated on an earlier generation of smaller crystals, of a slightly darker color, which provides a pretty contrast.

Strontianite, Celestine from Stoneco quarry (Maumee Stone Quarry; Maumee Quarry; Lime City Quarry), Lime City, Wood Co., Ohio, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-133770b.jpg]

9.6 x 6.7 x 5.7 cm. A STRIKING and VERY SHOWY Ohio specimen of lustrous, white strontianite partially pseudomorphing gray celestine crystals to 3.0 cm on a bit of limestone matrix. The crystals look hexagonal, but are in fact, parallel growth. They are WHITE FLOURESCENT and PHOSPHORESCENT! This very striking two-toned habit is unusual and was found only a few times in the late 70s and early 80s. The locality is now closed. Ex. Clyde Hardin Collection.

10.4 x 6.9 x 4.4 cm. An old-timer from Mexico - a large, euhedral crystal of celestine from the Plateros Mine, translucent and nearly colorless, with sharp faces all around (contact only on the bottom). Very uncommon on the market now. Check out the tiny, gemmy stepped compound crystal of purple fluorite on one of the faces!

11.0 x 10.5 x 9.0 cm. A showy and excellent CABINET specimen of lustrous and glassy, blue-gray celestine crystals to 3.9 cm aesthetically filling a large vug in limestone matrix. This fine piece hails from the famous Meckley’s Quarry of Mandata, Pennsylvania. The quarry opened in 1936 and this is large old-timer. The quality rivals Maybee, Michigan material. Ex. George Feist Collection.

Celestine, Calcite from Clay Center, Ottawa Co., Ohio, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-139233a.jpg]

7.8 x 2.4 x 1.0 cm. A PRISTINE Clay Center celestine, with an unusually thin tabular form that allows light through and creates uncommon transparency for these. These two tightly-intergrown crystals rise and terminate side-by-side. Two light amber calcites decorate one side, an unusual bonus for this beautiful mini of an American classic. The camera did not pick up the subtle grey-blue color of the Celestine, nor the light amber of the calcites - but it is there.

Gypsum (Var: Selenite), Celestine from Beineu-Kyr (Beyneu Kyr), Tuarkyr, Turkmenistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-140498a.jpg]

6.7 x 5.4 x 3.4 cm. Selenites are quite common from the Naica, Mexico area, but you do not see many worldwide specimens. Here is a rare one from one of the former Soviet republics, showing the same intense glassy clarity that makes some selenites so striking. What is unusual here, as compared to the Mexican ones, is how the selenite here is nicely set on multicolored blue on red celestine matrix. You can see through the flat "windows" into its clear interior.

20.5 x 9.7 x 2.9 cm. You almost never see one of these celestines from Musquiz that is complete and undamaged. But this is a floater that is complete all the way around, with the typical serrated edges. It has a nice pearly luster, too, and is translucent. But what caps it off is this purple fluorite - that sits right on its edge! A large, dramatic crystal! Classic combo for this locale, circa 1960s.
