IMPORTANT FOR LOCALITY! Sharp, twinned crystal approx 4 cm in length, incredibly lustrous and fine!! Personal collection of a miner-collector i trade with. this is one of the finest and most significant Brazil cassiterites I have ever seen for sale and comparable to ones I have seen priced $4000-5000, even. NOT FROM HAUCK, but fit in well here...this is a modern find.

This is a rare pegmatite-origin cassiterite (most larger crystals come from other styles of deposits, such as in China), from Brazil. The crystals are INCREDIBLY glassy and lustrous…the most metallic and jet black and shiny you can imagine for the species. I was stunned when I saw this piece, first, in a small collection being sold off at the Denver show in 2010. Everything about it is sparkly. The white and the black both. The cassiterites are pristine, undamaged, and reach 1.8 cm in size individually, and the leftmost cluster is 2.4 cm across. Many crystals are twinned. This is a superb, really visually and scientifically interesting piece from rarified finds that have come trickling out of these mines over the years. Never common, seldom seen on market. . If you are a thumbnail collector or collector of Chinese minerals, you will not find a better example of a Chinese gem cassiterite crystal than this one. In fact, it was the top piece of an entire lot we purchased last year. These are of course not to be confused with the far more common opaque black cassiterites from Pingwu. Here you have a deep coffee/smoky-colored crystal that was trimmed out on just the merest bit of matrix, somehow with no damage to the crystal, which is complete and displayable from all sides. It is a true "jewel" for a discriminating collector. SO MUCH BETTER, even, in person! This has to be one of the best cassiterite thumbs out there. Certtainly that I have seen.

This is a superb, razor-sharp, lustrous Wodginite specimen. Surprisingly, it turns out to be a thick coating of epitaxial Wodginite that overgew a decaying spindle of internal Cassiterite, now almost vanished. Aesthetic, rare, and world-class. This is an important specimen from a small find, of the early 1980's or late 1970s , that really surprised people. The wodginite from this find is superb anyways - unusually lustrous and sharp compared to the mineral from other localities. These are VERY hard to come by. I am told that the pocket was only the size of a basketball and the find limited to some dozens of specimens. This one, at 3.7 cm, is one of the larger pieces and is quite significant . When these first made an appearance at major mineral shows some 35 years ago, they were a big hit with collectors because of their odd formation. Richard Gaines, a well-known collector on the East Coast at the time, had the pocket and many of the best pieces. However, John White's label notes he got this directly from Carlos Barbosa in 1978 - probably right when they came out and before tehir ID as an epitaxial overgrowth had been determined. Unusual, to say the least, and rarely seen in the marketplace!

One of two exquisite cassiterites from this region, Charlie prized. These are RAZOR-sharp, and so lustrous they have a surface like the finest jet obsidian, more lustrous even than Chinese cassiterite. Both specimens are complexly twinned, and mesmerizing to the eye.

Note this one has a teeny ding on the upper edge of the left "wing"of the primary twinned crystal. So, otherwise it would be 2k...pride adjusted accordingly and its still a killer!

K-200 - Ilmenite with Cassiterite on Smoky Quartz - SOLD

Ilmenite with Cassiterite on Smoky Quartz from Erongo Mountains, Namibia [db_pics/pics/k-200a.jpg]

This specimen features a 3 x 3 x 1 cm ilmenite nearly embedded in the quartz matrix. On its edges are perched SAHRP cassiterite crystals to 1.25 cm. Some show twinning, I think. This is a MOST UNUSUAL association! I cannot recall seeing it from any other locality, before. It is the only such ilmenite we have, with epitaxial cassiterite association.

Cassiterite from Viloco Mine (Araca mine), Loayza Province, La Paz Department, Bolivia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-113392a.jpg]

3.9 x 2.8 x 1.9 cm. Bolivia has probably produced more tin than any other country in the world. The great tin mines at Viloco (sometimes called Araca) have produced some of the most magnificent Cassiterite specimens extant. This particular specimen consists of several superb, sharp, highly lustrous, mirror bright, black, brown cyclic twinned crystals measuring up to 1.1 cm with gemmy crystals of Quartz on matrix. This is a very attractive piece and one of the better ones for quality, luster and crystal size that I've seen in recent years. The piece is in great shape, and most crystals are virtually damage free. It is a great overall display specimen. This classic material from Viloco is simply not seen for sale in today's market anymore.

2.3 x 1.5 x 1.2 cm. It is quite unusual to see these bizarre Mexican cassiterites on the market - so called "wood tin" cassiterites, for their woody appearance (tin being the component of cassiterite that makes it an important ore worldwide). It has a broccoli form, with a stalk and botryoidal cap.
