The world’s gemmiest cassiterite crystals have, in the past, come from Viloco. Some Chinese crystals, some very few, now match them - but these have historicaly set the standard. However, specimens of this quality are now very scarce in the mineral market. This particular specimen is a cluster of lustrous, gemmy, brownish-tan, cassiterite crystals to 2.2 cm in length. They display dramatically, I think! The crystal on the top left-hand side is not only gemmy but it is also classically twinned. A superb old specimen with no damage to the display face except at the bottom periphery and one contacted small crystal atop!

Shiny black crystals of cassiterite, to 1.5 cm across, are associated with pearlescent muscovite which is nestled in the spaces between cassiterite crystals. Cassiterite is incredibly rare from the Mogok area. This is surely one of the finest examples and is in any case, the only good one that i have seen for sale. From the Burma collection of "Burma Bill" Larson, who has for decades brought out gems and then minerals as this region opened up to the trade in specimens.

A MAJOR specimen of import, that is widely regarded as by far the largest cassiterite known from California. It features a rough but nevertheless fully-formed cassiterite crystal that measures over 9 cm, adjoined on its rear by minor albite and an overhanging schorl crystal. Now, the schorl is repaired (heavily so, in fact) but this mess is hidden by the cassiterite itself and does detract from value but not from the display view and quality. In other words, since the cassiterite is the "star" and it is not the item which is repaired, the piece is still very worthy of consideration in my opinion. It is one of those minerals that is not as pretty as you would perhaps like it to be, but is of undeniable importance nonetheless in the scope of mineralogy and of California collecting in particular.

WOW! This amazing, 2.25-cm cassiterite is a real killer by San Diego standards, where the mineral is exceedingly rare in the pegmatites. I have seen just a handful in collections over the years. It was recognized in early mining material by the Gochenours, who sold it to local collector Chuck Houser, and then eventually it ended up with Chris when he concentrated on a CG suite. It is a unique piece to my knowledge. The crystal is complet all around except for minor contacting on the right-upper edge. It is associated with minor tourmaline.

A superb specimen of cassiterite from this classic Russian locale! Most such crystals are small, and frankly boring an dugly. This is a gorgeous crystal with sharp symmetry and stark jet black color, plus lustre! It is complete all around, except for some contacting on a few lower back faces. The termination, in particular, is complete and symmetric all around, showcasing this unusual pyramidal termination that the locality is known for. It is a unique cassiterite crystal style, and I cannot say I have seen comparable from any of the contemporary cassiterite localities, giving this piece quite a bit of interest value.

This important specimen is a cluster of extremely lustrous cassiterite to 2 cm, with the highest lustre you could dream of for a Cornish specimen. It is most likely, by comparison to known specimens, from the Wheal Kea area. It is so lustrous in fact, that it somehow ended up with the garnet suite that Gary Hansen obtained from Smith College in the early 1980s. (even though the museum's own label denotes it as a cornish cassiterite)

A gorgeous, sharp, cassiterite crystal with jet black color and breathtaking lustre for the species. This thing is so sharp and bright you can see your reflection from its major faces. For Brazil, such quality is incredibly rare, though has been reported occasionally. This is surely an older specimen, and was in the collection of Lawrence Conklin. The bottom is sawed where it was removed from matrix, though it sits well because of this. Sadly, the piece is repaired once, with the far 9mm or so of the most overhanging and exposed corner having been reattached. It is a good repair, not visible as it sits on the shelf and only seen with closer inspection, but still a repair that decreases value (I had estimated this at $2000 previously). Nevertheles, a highly important and rare, very showy, locality piece for this species

Cassiterite is only found in facet grade material from a handful of localities around the world. Prior to the new find of gem Casstierite in China, the majority of the world's facet rough came from the Viloco mine in Bolivia. This new Chinese material is proving to rival and even surpass the Bolivian material in some respects. These new Chinese stones are not only colorless and brown, but some of them show beautiful golden hues. This stone is a relatively large gem for Cassiterite and because of the sheer density of the material, the weight is much more than most other stones in this size range. The color of the stone is a straw yellow hue (perhaps a bit lighter than the photos would indicate). The stone is amazingly clean for a gem this size as it is only very very slightly included. One of the other great aspects of Cassiterite is the high refractive index of the material which allows for superior light return and sometimes color flash. You can see the color flash in the photo I took viewing through the pavillion of the gem. Overall, I think this gem is a world class Cassiterite and would not be easy to replace.
