18.2 x 14.1 x 8.4 cm. This is a huge plate of calcite crystals from China. This find was distinguished by the powdering of sparkly pyrite crystals that outline the edges of the crystals. The calcites measure to 2 cm across. They are modified cubes with striated bevels (which is where the pyrite was deposited).
4.9 x 3.9 x 2.3 cm. From the Marty Zinn collection, a specimen of this classic from the Kalahari manganese fields. It features rich sprays of bladed crystals, of a fine deep salmon color.
5.4 x 4.4 x 3.3 cm. A pocket filled with gemmy crystals of the super-desirable bright pink cobaltoan varietal of calcite, from Bou Azzer. This past year has seen some wonderful specimens come out, with unusual crystal size and gemminess. The crystals are elongated, quite transparent, and look like little pink gems!
10.9 x 7.6 x 5.1 cm. This was just a remarkable find in my opinion - crystals of calcite with their edges completely coated with bright, golden pyrite! The supply did not last that long, and whatever is left out there is the dwindling remainder of the mining that occurred mostly early last year.
9.2 x 4.7 x 2.9 cm. A very sculptural and aesthetic Tsumeb specimen of a towering and sharp malachite after azurite crystal. Beautifully and richly sprinkled on the tower and slope below are gemmy, emerald-green dioptase crystals, translucent, off-white calcite rhombs and calcite rhombs included with dioptase.
4.8 x 2.7 x 2.5 cm. A classic, sharp, lustrous, tabular, rose-red rhodonite crystal aesthetically and vertically set in calcite matrix with attendant, tan willemite crystals. A very showy combination piece from the classic locality of Sterling Hill. Outstanding fluorescence with the calcite and willemite! Ex. George Elling Collection.
4.5 x 4.5 x 4.0 cm. An UNUSUAL, UNIQUE and showy specimen from the famed Emke Mine at Onganja of chalcotrichite included in calcite with TWO habits of copper. Leaf copper is VERY UNCOMMON from the Emke Mine and having the scattering of tiny, elongated, spinel-twined copper crystals on and in calcite crystals is a nice addition. The rosette-like cluster of included calcite crystals on the extended copper leaf is striking. The copper has a very nice patina and the overall piece has a very sculptural form.
10.2 x 5.5 x 5.0 cm. A DROP DEAD GORGEOUS realgar and calcite CABINET specimen from the recent finds at the Shimen Mine of China. A beautiful cluster of brilliant, super-gemmy, cherry-red realgar crystals is aesthetically set on the side of a 7.0 cm, very glassy, near transparent, doubly terminated and twinned, light gray calcite crystal. A razor sharp, transparent, 6.2 cm, amber calcite crystal superbly compliments the realgar and gray calcite crystal.
6.3 x 4.9 x 3.0 cm. A showy and most unusual specimen from the San Martin Mine of Zacatecas, Mexico. The lustrous, gray-purple, dogtooth calcite crystals form a well-shaped mound with the largest crystals at the top. The dogteeth are altered to and have a distinctive overgrowth of purple fluorite, which in turn, have a preferential secondary overgrowth of sparkly, tan calcite. The tan, secondary calcite has moderate orange fluorescence.
16.5 x 11.6 x 6.6 cm. A large, showy specimen, a partial vug coated with dove-grey to white crystalline quartz, featuring in the center a glowing, gemmy, razor-sharp calcite measuring 3 cm, with a golden-brown color. The quartz has formed little stalactitic fingers, adding to the attractiveness of the matrix. The calcite is pristine, and really glows! Next to the calcite is an accenting quartz formation that balances it nicely.
6.7 x 4.6 x 6.0 cm. A classic Illinois combination - very dark purple crystals of fluorite, to 1.3 cm, in association with a cluster of etched yellow calcites. Calcite has selectively coated some of the faces of the fluorites, as well.
8.5 x 6.7 x 5.8 cm. A large cluster of beautiful, snowy balls of slightly translucent calcite, accented with caramel-colored dolomite. This pretty Eastern European specimen was mined in Romania in 2000, at the then-very-prolific Boldut Mine.
13.9 x 11.3 x 5.1 cm. Finds of collector-quality mineral specimens have been rare in Wisconsin, and this is a large and fine specimen from one of the most exciting in decades. These superb, sharp scalenohedrons of calcite contain phantoms demarcated by minute pyrite (the pyrite coated the crystals during an earlier stage of growth, and then growth continued, engulfing the earlier crystal with its pyrite coating). Collected in 1993-1994 from a unique one-time find there.
4.7 x 2.5 x 2.2 cm. A perfect, and perfectly beautiful, crystal of yellow-green gem fluorapatite with the form and color typical for this Canadian locality. It measures 4 cm, and as you can see, it has been beautifully prepped so that it is exposed all around, including the two terminations. These are stabilized with shellac, it needs to be said. Gemmy and bright as can be!
8.6 x 6.5 x 4.1 cm. A stark white, prickly ball of okenite sits on a backdrop of amethyst crystals, with some accenting little clear calcites. A smaller okenite ball is nearby. The larger okenite ball measures 2.7 cm across. A striking and aesthetic Indian specimen with unusually stout okenites!
