13.7 x 13.2 x 7.9 cm. This is a large and gorgeous specimen from Brazil. There is a complete, multiply-terminated, silky calcite crystal sitting right on a cluster of gemmy, glassy amethyst crystals. The calcite measures over 10 cm, and the specimen was trimmed out very carefully around it, so you have this wonderful balance between the calcite and the amethyst. The calcite has this wonderful creamy, silky luster, and is translucent, a light golden color which does not come through in the pics; it contrasts nicely with the glassy amethyst. This was very likely an amethyst geode, and the geode was cut and trimmed out to create this dazzling specimen that highlights the calcite.
9.7 x 7.7 x 5.1 cm. You do NOT see many of these Holloway Quarry calcites on the market at all! They are distinctive for this combination with bladed crystals of celestite. Here, the calcite scalenohedrons have a glowing, pretty golden translucence. They appear in a very attractive balance with the celestites.
13.3 x 10.9 x 5.6 cm. A dazzling combo piece from the Daye Mine! The pyrite crystal that crowns one end of the specimen is a total knockout - just stunning in its luster, form, and the way it sits up on the matrix like a jewel. On the other side of the specimen is a silky quartz crystal, wrapped with calcites and chocolate-brown hubeites. There is so much going on here - all of it pretty! Pyrite is very unusual for the locality and even more so in combination with all the other minerals there. This is a rare quality, in combination, and not just a combination if that makes sense.
23.4 x 20.5 x 10.5 cm. A huge, fascinating specimen from Tsumeb - a plate of solid crystallized calcite (no matrix rock!) that has formed a stalactitic natural "arch" or handle! Some miner cut this right out of the wall of the vug and preserved this cool formation!
This Photo was Mindat.org Photo of the Day - 3rd Jan 2008
4.9 x 3.5 x 2.1 cm. A beautiful and aesthetic specimen of isolated, very gemmy, emerald-green dioptase crystals to 8 mm on lustrous, off-white calcite rhombs from Tsumeb. This is the most desirable dioptase combination from Tsumeb and you can see why. Ex. George Elling Collection.
12.5 x 6.5 x 4.0 cm. An OLD-TIME, CLASSIC Copper Queen Mine CABINET specimen of nested, dentritic, spinel-twinned copper wires on a thin, sturdy, botryoidal, beige calcite crust. The central, mounded copper "nest" is an impressive feature and some of the copper wires have an overgrowth of secondary calcite. BRIGHT orange fluorescence on the calcite!! Certainly around 100 years old. Ex. George Elling Collection.
7.5 x 5.5 x 3.8 cm. A SPECTACULAR and AESTHETIC Santa Eulalia pseudomorph specimen of large, isolated, translucent, olive-green smithsonite after calcite crystals to 2.7 cm and beautifully accented by tiny quartz and pyrite crystals. This superb piece is pristine and is beautifully constructed.
3.2 x 2.8 x 2.1 cm. An UNUSUAL, UNIQUE and showy specimen from the famed Emke Mine at Onganja of chalcotrichite included in calcite with TWO habits of copper. Leaf copper is VERY UNCOMMON from the Emke Mine and having the antenna-like copper wires on a calcite crystal is really UNUSUAL. The copper has a very nice patina and the overall piece has a very sculptural form.
12.3 x 10.2 x 10.1 cm. These are big, blocky crystals to 4 cm with silky surfaces! This one is EXTREMELY unusual in form compared to most (which are variations of scalenohedra mostly).
8.8 x 8.6 x 4.8 cm. A very unusual specimen of sparkly quartz which has pseudomorphed the underlying calcite crystals! Some little orangey calcites have been lifted up and carried with the top of the crystals as they grew and are now sideways on the tips of the quartz-covered calcites. This is very unusual stuff for the locality, and certainly very pretty too!
9.7 x 8.4 x 2.7 cm. A gorgeous and classic combination from probably the world’s single most famous mineral locality! Here you have super-sharp and pretty transparent-to-translucent rhombs of calcite accented by crystals of super-sparkly green dioptase of the most intense green color.
7.2 x 5.2 x 4.8 cm. This is a RARE combination from the Meikle Mine, which is now famous for these gemmy golden barites. Here, you have an unusually thick and chunky barite, with the famous gemmy golden color, nestled amongst gemmy scalenohedrons of calcite that look like they come from Dalnegorsk!
6.5 x 5.3 x 1.2 cm. Very fine specimen of the rare nesosilicate Poldervaartite from the Kalahari. The flesh-colored crystals, which are translucent to gemmy, have superb luster and range up to 1 cm in length. And not only are some of them nicely isolated, but they have the very attractive prismatic habit that at times morphs into bowties. An excellent, aesthetic specimen, especially with the small, lustrous calcites adding interest and contrast.
3.6 x 3.4 x 1.2 cm. The tetragonal pyramids, .5 cm on edge, are razor-sharp and super-lustrous. One of the truly great things about the specimen is that pyramids retain their individuality. They are not intergrown like you see on many Hausmannites. This is an exceptional specimen, not only for the quality of the Hausmannite crystals but the fine combination that you find it in.
5.6 x 4.6 x 3.2 cm. Exquisite piece composed of lovely pink plumose sprays of Manganoan calcite that are bundled like wheat sheaves. Delicate and elegant, the pics really do show the specimen well. But to hold it in your hand…In excellent condition with the attachment point at the base. The miner did a fabulous job getting this out. Superb and aesthetic.
