This is the finest dioptase thumbnail for my taste, that I have handled. Roland and Kathy Sherman considered it to be among the best dioptase thumbnails period, when they obtained it. It is indeed a SUPERB dioptase with two balanced, prefect crystals perched on calcite. Each species has the best color and lustre. Ex Zweibel personal collection, to the Jim and Dawn Minette collection in 1992 when the Zweibels sold their secret stash and retired from mineral dealing. The Minettes traded this to Roland and Kathy Sherman in 2001, where it remained since. It was in many prizewinning exhibits by both the Minettes and Shermans. A note on Roland's index card label adds: "Bought out from under me at the '92 Denver show by Minette!" - and he never forgot it! . From the Roland and Kathy Sherman thumbnail collection: they are competitive thumbnail exhibitors from Southern California, specializing in copper species. Joe Budd Photos
A great collector's stone. How often do you see Cobaltoan Calcite available for sale in today's market? This stone is a nice, good size, very rare, rich pink color, "Oval" cut gemstone of Cobaltoan Calcite. Gems like this are rarely seen in faceted stones, and the color on this stone is good for this material. It is indeed a very rare gem considering that rough is extremely difficult to find, not to mention that the area which produced this material is now closed and there is almost no other source for these crystals in the world outside of Morocco and the Congo. The Spanish material is by far the most classic and highly sought after when it comes to cut stones. This stone is translucent/gemmy, and it is difficult to find this material in clean stones, so inclusions are accepted by most collectors and dealers. Despite my best efforts, I cannot get the photos to look as good as the stone appears in person. A very attractive rare gemstone with great color.

A very fine prismatic twin, from the classic locality that has produced these wonderful examples considered best of this particular habit. The three dimensional aspect, combined with the glassy surfaces and super-sharp angles, elevate this specimen's importance significantly. Few of this size were found and tehy commanded high prices in the late 1990s when they came out. Many of the larger ones needed repairs, and there is one neat repair about 1/3 of the way from the top, where a cleavage occurred ( horizontally) and was perfectly and nearly seamlessly rejoined . This crystal is large, super sharp and lustrous, hard to find today in this material.

A beautiful encrustation pseudomorph of amethyst crystals after a scalenohedron of calcite, 9-cm long. Much of the calcite is missing now (dissolved away in nature) based on the light weight of the specimen. The crystal form of the calcite was faithfully preserved in teh sparkling amethyst cast, and the specimen is very asthetic overall.

A dramatic, 3-dimensional specimen of stacked light-pink, lustrous manganocalcite rhombs radiating upward from the base. The crystals are very sharp and lustrous, and overall this is a very asthetic specimen with more crystals in one piece than you normally saw of this material when it wsa coming out in the 1980s-90s. Most specimens are smaller, or just a few crystals in cluster or on ugly matrix. I had always regarded this as one of the great examples of a South African manganocalcite. It came out of the Dr. Ludi von Bezing Collection in around 1999-2000 and remains the best of its type I have seen for sale. STRONGLY fluoresces, bright neon orange!

Perched aesthetically on a contrasting matrix of silvery galena and stark white calcite, is a cluster of intergrown, glassy and gemmy spinel-twinned crystals of fluorite. The fluorite cluster measures 6 cm across. Minor, white calcite crystals, to 0.75 cm in length are associated with the galena crystals that reach 0.5 cm across. This is an appealing combo specimen from Naica with lots of contrast. The aesthetic perch of the fluorite atop the stalk of matrix makes it unusual, as does the twinning so evident in the crystal itself. The crystal atop is remarkably in good shape and not repaired. This is a classic color, a pastel green hue, for the locale. Probably it was mined in the 1980s. This specimen was on loaned exhibit in the University of Arizona Museum for over a decade until my purchase of this collection in 2008. MUCH more gemmy in person! Comes with custom lucite base already made for the specimen.

Botryoidal and sugary, white calcite is the matrix for two, glassy and gemmy, lavender fluorite crystals, to 2.75 cm across. Both fluorite crystals exhibit stepped growth. Aesthetic Miniature of a rare style for this locality. Comes with custom lucite base already made for the specimen.

A most unusual matrix of snow-white, botryoidal calcite, with spheres up to 5.0 cm across, is the host for discrete, glassy and gemmy, lavender, fluorite crystals, to 2.5 cm across. Every fluorite crystal exhibits incredibly complex and dramatic stepped growth. The color contrast is also marvelous. I have not before seen fluorite of this particular style ON this kind of matrix from here, and the Romero collection had just one large piece , from which we trimmed away a damaged portion to create this far better , if smaller, specimen - still a full cabinet size, but now without the damage he would have seen on a portion of the original piece. Comes with custom lucite base already made for the specimen. This specimen was on loaned exhibit in the University of Arizona Museum for over a decade until my purchase of this collection in 2008.

Superb, flower-like rosettes, composed of diverging crystals of lustrous and translucent calcite, are aesthetically perched on massive, metallic galena. The largest rosette measures nearly 5 cm in length. It is a striking piece more reminiscent of Romanian material, than of Mexican. This specimen was on loaned exhibit in the University of Arizona Museum for over a decade until my purchase of this collection in 2008. Comes with custom lucite base already made for the specimen.

In appearance this galena specimen resembles an oreo cookie with galena on both sides of a calcite layer. Intergrown, splendent crystals of metallic galena form the bottom/matrix of this piece, draped by a vein of colorless, sparkling, calcite crystals. Topping the specimen are large, complexly formed crystals of galena, to 2.5 cm in length. The combination makes a dramatic contrast to display the galena, and a true mineral oddity in its overall appearance ! This specimen was on loaned exhibit in the University of Arizona Museum for over a decade until my purchase of this collection in 2008. Comes with custom lucite base already made for the specimen. This is just a wonderful , aesthetic combo specimen from Naica, among the most unique I can recall seeing. The matrix is a lustrous and translucent, doubly terminated, milky white rhomdohedral crystal of calcite measuring 5 cm across. Perched aesthetically on the calcite crystal are 3 complexly intergrown octahedrons of lustrous and translucent, lavender-purpley fluorite to 2.6 cm in length. As if their intergrowth were not complex enough, they exhibit stepped growth which creates a myriad of reflecting facets. For added measure the fluorite crystals are studded with brassy yellow pyrite crystals, to 2mm across. Superb in every way, this is a unique specimen far beyond the usual combo. You couldn't make better aesthetics if you glued it together. Comes with custom lucite base already made for the specimen. This specimen was on loaned exhibit in the University of Arizona Museum for over a decade until my purchase of this collection in 2008.

Great aesthetics highlight this combination specimen with a matrix of galena. Aesthetically perched high on the galena is a single, glassy and gemmy, cuboctahedron of emerald green fluorite, measuring 3.5 cm across. Wreathlike clusters of drusy, ivory colored calcite, surround the fluorite and accent it. The balance of the fluorite with the galenas also adds to make this a wonderful combo specimen for the locale, with most of its classic species on one piece. MORE GEMMY IN PERSON! Comes with custom lucite base already made for the specimen.

A simple and stark specimen with a single large, doubly-terminated calcite scalenohedron.Large for the locality, and very balanced. This specimen from the Dr Miguel Romero collection was on loan exhibition to the University of Arizona Museum for over a decade, until my purchase of this collection in 2008. It was on display in special cases at the museum, and has since been featured in the book "The Miguel Romero Collection of Mexico Minerals" which we sponsored as a special supplement book (published by the Mineralogical Record in December of 2008).

A very aesthetic large specimen with malachite pseudomorphs after azurite perched on a large scalenohedral calcite crystal. That calcite is then covered by a second generation of sparkly, translucent, disc shaped calcites. And lastly, there are 2 primary azurite crystals , completely sharp and pristine and mysteriously unaltered, sitting right next to the malachites ! This is one of the few "attractive" specimens I have seen from the locale, where most of these malachites are not much to look at, usually.
