This fascinating specimen formed when gemmy calcite crystals grew in the natural pocket formed by a buried fossil clamshell. The interior of the shell is now full of these fine, golden crystals. This is a truly LARGE and EXCEPTIONAL one, in that the shell is complete, with "windows" in either side to give a view into the gemmy golden crystals of the interior. And, it is sitting on a matrix of shell conglomerate, forming a natural base! 13.6 x 11.0 x 7.7 cm
This is a large DOME of calcite covered with sharp, lustrous, scalenohedral crystals, from a brand new find in China that is thus far quite small. The crystals cover this dome all the way around, with very little damage. 15.1 x 12.5 x 7.8 cm
A SUPERB small miniature from this Utah find of these pretty calcites with lustrous, white pyramidal terminations. This is such a pretty and nicely trimmed specimen, with four crystals perfectly centered on the matrix. 3.7 x 2.7 x 2.4cm
A stunningly pretty, branching specimen of calcite, a very unusual form for a mine that has turned out calcites in a dizzying array of beautiful forms. I have not seen this form before . . . 5.9 x 4.2 x 2.7cm
This is one of the best specimens I am aware of from a very small recent find in Hubei Province, and really a spectacular calcite by any standards. The whopper 8.5-cm crystal is complete all around, and perched perfectly on a natural “base” of small scalenohedral calcites. The crystals from this find are distinguished by hematite inclusions. This fine crystal has TOP luster and fine gemminesss, with sharp faces all the way around except for just one small rear face which seems to be a natural smooth crysatl contact plane. It is complete and undamaged. 9 x 8 x 7 cm
Talk about cool – this is a BIG specimen of glittery golden-green marcasite that has formed a dome over massive sphalerite, crowned by a cluster of transparent, disc-shaped calcite crystals! In person, the calcites are clear to very slightly yellow (not pinkish as the camera seemed to make them). This is a large, dramatic old Shullsberg specimen! 15.5 x 10 x 6.2 cm
Yet another different-looking Droujba Mine calcite, this a dramatic one with BIG, pointy scalenohedral calcite crystals to 9 cm (!) coated with an iron-rich mineral, on a contrasting grey quartz matrix. 13.8 x 10.0 x 7.0 cm
A large, beautiful cluster of quartz crystals covered with little platy, translucent calcites - and, nestled amongst them, a super-sharp, 2.5-cm tetradecahedral (14-sides) crystal of galena, with a fine metallic shine. 15.0 x 10.4 x 7.1 cm
This is a LARGE, COMPLETE and FINE example from this fascinating discovery in Florida. Gemmy calcite crystals grew in the natural pockets formed by buried fossil clamshells. The interior of this large shell is now completely full of these fine, golden crystals. Windows in each side allow a perfect view of the gemmy crystals from either side - it can be displayed either way! This one also features a sparing amount of gray conglomerate matrix which sets off the shell nicely. A top-notch specimen from this find! 13.2 x 11.0 x 6.8 cm
A beautiful Eastern European miniature, featuring calcite twins that have been coated by a second generation of sparkly, creamy microcrystals of calcite; the twins sit atop, and have in places grown around, a cluster of quartz crystals. 5.8 x 4.7 x 2.6 cm
Another very pretty calcite from Eastern Europe - this one, a cluster of sharp scalenohedral crystals with a coating that is greenish on one side of the crystals, and cream-colored on the other side, giving them a unique look. 8.2 x 5.3 x 4.1 cm
A GORGEOUS and SUPERB emerald thumbnail from the Irv Brown Thumbnail Collection. This aesthetic specimen from the CHIVOR MINE features two gemmy and lustrous, rabbit ears-like emerald crystals set on calcite matrix with a lustrous pyritohedron in front as a nice accent. 1.5 x 1.2 x 1.2 cm
A SHOWY and EXCELLENT, complete all-around, lustrous, translucent, etched- and stepped-faced, pastel-pink, manganoan calcite scalenohedron with a pearlescent termination from the Androvo Mine of Bulgaria. 7.5 x 6.5 x 5.9 cm
Two generations of calcite make up these spiky scalenohedral crystals - translucent on the interior, with a surface of opaque white calcite. A few of the tips are cleaved. You can see some of the associated blue fouorite in one of the shots. 10.9 x 7.0 x 6.9 cm
The calcites on this specimen (the larger is 2.7 cm) have a beautiful shimmering, creamy surface that the pics did not capture. They sit on a bed of quartz crystals, with some tiny calcites scattered amongst them. A pretty Eastern European piece. 8.4 x 8.3 x 3.2 cm
