The matrix here is completely covered with gemmy golden barite crystals, and on one side, calcite crystals have grown during a later phase in the pocket. This is a classic combination from Asturias. 5.2 x 3.8 x 2.6cm

Calcite from Mun. de Rodeo, Durango, Mexico [db_pics/mdpics/MD-60743a.jpg]

It was saddening to see these Rodeo calcite specimens disappear as quickly as they came a couple of years back. They ranged from single scalenohedral crystals, to small clusters of two or three crystals, to (rarely) large plates of crystals, some with two different habits. This has to be one of the largest that came out in good condition. And, it features both the silky scalenohedrons and flattened butterfly twins! One of these twins measures over 8 cm across the “wingspan.” The scalenohedrons measure up to 8 cm in length and have the classic gemminess with silky luster. There are some broken crystals on the back side of the specimen but only a couple of VERY minor dings on the display side, so it is in terrific shape for a piece of this magnitude. 29 X 16 X 9.5 cm

Calcite from Gallatin Co., Montana, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-60799a.jpg]

This is a big, showy, absolutely breathtaking example of superb calcite twins from Montana, a true showpiece that came out of the Frielach Collection. The crystals measure up to 9 cm, and just glow with a beautiful yellowish-amber color that is much more beautiful in person than the pics show. They have a beautiful waxy luster. 22.3 x 16.0 x 13.4cm

A LARGE and SUPERB example of this strange and pretty Florida phenomenon, as this is a complete shell standing up on the natural "base" of a horizontal shell, making it particularly aesthetic! This fascinating specimen formed when gemmy calcite crystals grew in the natural pocket formed by a buried fossil clamshell. These fine, golden crystals now ring the opening of the shell. A special one! 10.7 x 9.9 x 9.1cm

There were only a few specimens from this amazing find that appeared at Tucson - no clue whether that was all there will ever be or not. What you have is a BIG cluster of sharp rhombs of calcite (to 8 cm tip-to-tip!), with this gorgeous sparkly pyrite of gold, green and copper tones, decorating the crystal faces. I bought every decent one I saw at the show, and that amounted to exactly six. These are VERY unusual specimens, I have not seen their like before from anywhere, and there is no telling if any more will turn up. 16.7 x 11.5 x 10.8cm

Amongst the fine cobaltian calcites that have been coming from Bou Azzer have been just a few of these AMAZING SHOCKING PINK specimens, presumably from a higher concentration of cobalt, but whatever the case, the crystals just have this amazing saturation of color. I have NOT seen many of these around, so if you''re into color, here''s something you would love! 6.5 x 4.0 x 2.5cm

This is a huge plate of the fine phantom calcites discovered in Leiping, the mining of which is now FINISHED. This large plate came from a stash in the backroom of a dealer-friend in Tucson earlier this year. Thee calcites from this locality are quite distinctive: fat, lustrous, and with perfect pyramidal terminations. But most of all, each crystal has a phantom inside, from an earlier generation of growth which received a mineral coating, then was engulfed by later growth, so you can see the phantom clearly inside. Glows a fine red under UV! This is a large showpiece that can be displayed upright using a stand and really wow people! 26.6 x 25.0 x 10.5cm

An aesthetic specimen of lustrous, translucent, olive-green mimetite prisms to 5 mm richly covering a mounded matrix of lustrous, translucent and colorless calcite rhombs from the famous Mina Ojuela of Mexico. A couple of broken mimetite crystals are minimally detracting from this fine piece. 5.3 x 3.4 x 2.3 cm

Calcite (Var: Cobaltoan Calcite) from Schneeberg District, Erzgebirge, Saxony, Germany [db_pics/mdpics/MD-60933a.jpg]

6.6 x 6.6 x 4.6 cm. This matrix calcite is rare, very old, and extremely aesthetic. The intense pink color, luster and translucence make this a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence. I had never seen one for sale before, only reading of them in old books. In fact, the calcite crystals exhibit a darker orange-pink color at the base and grade into the rich pink color toward the termination. The largest cluster, which measures almost 3.5 cm in length, majestically rises from the matrix. There is minor peripheral damage but, obviously, is of no significance in context of this magnificent and historic piece , which still displays quite nicely. There is a photo of a similar old pink calcite in the July-August, 2005 of Lapis magazine.

Now here is an interesting, uncommon and PRETTY combination of Bou Azzer minerals both of which get their color from the cobalt content: the roselite (very closely related to wendwilsonite, by the way), an intense deep scarlet, and the calcite, of course, a pretty pastel pink. You see specimens of each coming from Morocco lately, but typically not both together like this! 9.6 x 6 x 4 cm

Not all that many cinnabar specimens are truly aesthetic – this one really is, I think. The fine cinnabar crystal (1.5 cm) is sitting on white quartz right next to an amber crystal of calcite; so you get an unusual and pretty combination of colors. There is a ding on a back corner of the cinnabar, but it doesn’t detract from the beauty of this piece from the display face. The color contrast is striking and really, very uncommon! 6 x 4 x 4.5 cm

I have not seen this style of calcite from Dalnegorsk in awhile...it is older material. This piece features elegantly splayed crystals with pyramidal terminations, on a matrix of coated massive calcite. The color is a very pale pink in person, as shown. At any rate, the isolation of the crystals on this contrasting matrix is really attractive! 9 x 8.5 x 6.5 cm

The variety of calcites from Dalnegorsk has been just staggering, and here is a highly unusual one: a flat, lustrous, hexagonal crystal, actually two flat crystals that have grown against one another! They sit on a small stalk of quartz. 3.8 x 3.5 x 1.5 cm
