9.9 x 7.3 x 6.0 cm. Superb, flower-like rosettes, composed of diverging crystals of lustrous and translucent calcite are aesthetically perched on massive, metallic galena. The largest rosette measures nearly 5 cm in length. It is a striking piece more reminiscent of Romanian material, than of Mexican. This specimen was on loaned exhibit in the University of Arizona Museum for over a decade until my purchase of this collection in 2008. Ex. Dr. Miguel Romero Collection.

Galena, Calcite from Gibraltar Mine (incl.

13.4 x 9.5 x 5.2 cm. In appearance this galena specimen resembles an Oreo cookie with galena on both sides of a calcite layer. Intergrown, splendent crystals of metallic galena form the bottom/matrix of this piece, draped by a vein of colorless, sparkling calcite crystals. Topping the specimen are large, complexly formed crystals of galena, to 2.5 cm in length. The combination makes a dramatic contrast to display the galena, and a true mineral oddity in its overall appearance. This specimen was on loaned exhibit in the University of Arizona Museum for over a decade until my purchase of this collection in 2008. Ex. Dr. Miguel Romero Collection.

Fluorite, Calcite, Galena, Pyrite from Gibraltar Mine (incl.

11.1 x 8.0 x 6.4 cm. Aesthetically emplaced on matrix of massive pyrite is an unusually glassy and transparent crystal of pastel lavender fluorite measuring 3 cm across. The crystal exhibits slightly stepped growth with octahedral faces modifying the cube (accounting for the beautiful bevels on the edges). Minor white calcite crystals cover one of the fluorite faces, a nice accent. As an added bonus there are several lustrous, gray crystals of galena perched on a druse of yellow pyrite, adding to the overall sparkle of the piece. A classic combination specimen from Naica, but with an unusually fine fluorite, nice and isolated for the exhibition of its sharp crystal form. Ex. Dr. Miguel Romero Collection.

6.9 x 5.4 x 3.2 cm. This is just a wonderful, aesthetic combination specimen from Naica, among the most unique I can recall seeing. The matrix is a lustrous and translucent, doubly terminated, milky white rhomdohedral crystal of calcite measuring 5 cm across. Perched aesthetically on the calcite crystal are 3 complexly intergrown octahedrons of lustrous and translucent, lavender-purple fluorite to 2.6 cm in length. As if their intergrowth were not complex enough, they exhibit stepped growth which creates a myriad of reflecting facets. For added measure the fluorite crystals are studded with brassy yellow pyrite crystals, to 2mm across. Superb in every way, this is a unique specimen far beyond the usual combination. This specimen was on loaned exhibit in the University of Arizona Museum for over a decade until my purchase of this collection in 2008. Ex. Dr. Miguel Romero Collection.

11.5 x 11.0 x 6.4 cm. Firstly, the lustre on this is astonishing, like wet sugar. Many mineral specimens have been likened in appearance to flowers. This specimen is a case study in the metaphor. Here, snow white fingers of botryoidal calcite have been mostly covered by a second generation of calcite that is more or less colorless; but which has incredible wet or waxy luster and an eerie translucence. The largest tentacle-like measures 5.0 cm in length. Ex. Martin Lewadny Collection.

6.7 x 6.0 x 4.5 cm. Great aesthetics highlight this combination specimen with a matrix of galena. Aesthetically perched high on the galena is a single, glassy and gemmy, cuboctahedron of emerald-green fluorite, measuring 3.5 cm across. Wreathlike clusters of drusy, ivory-colored calcite surround the fluorite and accent it. The balance of the fluorite with the galenas also adds to make this a wonderful combination specimen for the locale, with most of its classic species on one piece. Ex. Dr. Miguel Romero Collection.

12 x 7 x 5 cm. A simple and stark specimen with a single large, doubly terminated calcite scalenohedron. Large for the locality and very balanced. This specimen from the Dr Miguel Romero collection was on loan exhibition to the University of Arizona Museum for over a decade, until my purchase of this collection in 2008. It was on display in special cases at the museum, and has since been featured in the book "The Miguel Romero Collection of Mexico Minerals" which we sponsored as a special supplement book (published by the Mineralogical Record in December of 2008).

Malachite, Azurite, Calcite from Cobre Mine, El Cobre, Mun. de Concepción del Oro, Zacatecas, Mexico [db_pics/mdpics/MD-266128a.jpg]

9.5 x 8 x 7.5 cm. A very aesthetic large specimen with malachite pseudomorphs after azurite perched on a large scalenohedral calcite crystal. That calcite is then covered by a second generation of sparkly, translucent, disc-shaped calcites. And lastly, there are 2 primary azurite crystals, completely sharp and pristine and mysteriously unaltered, sitting right next to the malachites. This is one of the few "attractive" specimens I have seen from the locale, where most of these malachites are not much to look at, usually.

8.3 x 3.2 x 2.2 cm. A fine and most unusual specimen of sand-included, doubly terminated calcite crystals. This complete-all-around floater piece, with only slight rubbing, is from a long defunct South Dakota locality - Rattlesnake Butte. The crystals have sharp hexagonal form and this striking piece looks just like a dirigible or blimp with the passenger gondola underneath. Old material from the Dennis Mullane Collection and very rarely available.

6.6 x 6.6 x 6.5 cm. A sharp, 2.3 cm franklinite crystal is set on blocky, pastel-pink calcite accented with smaller franklinites and brown willemite. The textbook, octahedral crystal is moderately lustrous. The calcite fluoresces orange-red and the willemite green. Classic highly representative and fine material from the famous mines of the Franklin District of New Jersey.

15.0 x 13.4 x 11.0 cm. This well-prepared, large cabinet, circular basalt vesicle is spectacularly lined with glassy, gem-like, colorless apophyllite crystals with a few pink stilbite blades as a nice accent. A spectacular 4.5 cm, gem, twinned, amber calcite crystal dramatically rests on a mound of apophyllite crystals dead-center in the vug. The calcite is limpid, highly lustrous and has an unusual twinning form. This is a superb, very aesthetic, large calcite and apophyllite specimen.

14.0 x 11.3 x 7.2 cm. A dramatic and striking cabinet specimen from a find a couple of years back in China, and is absolutely unique: glittery, golden, bubbly/botryoidal, intergrown pyrite microcrystals on the edges of large (to 4.3 cm across on this piece) flattened rhombs of lustrous, colorless calcite. Some of the specimens had very sparse coverage of pyrite, just a salting, but here, it is richly carpeting the crystal edges. Outstanding condition for the size. Very few came out with this quality.

2.5 x 2.3 x 1.4 cm. Spherical graphite is very rare worldwide, but here we have a 3 mm, lustrous, lead-gray graphite ball elegantly perched atop a cleavage of starkly contrasting calcite from an uncommon Canadian locale - the Highway 507 roadcut near Gooderham, Ontario. Very rarely available.

6.8 x 4.6 x 4.5 cm. An aesthetic combination specimen from the Elmwood Mine. A 1.8 cm, lustrous, translucent, vivid deep purple fluorite cube is set atop sculptural, box-work matrix coated with sparkly, drusy calcite, which in turn, is richly covered with interesting, smaller fluorite cubes. The large cube has a striking, undamaged, negative impression from another fluorite crystal and unusual raised edges. Ex. Daniel Trinchillo Sr. Collection.
