4JG60 - Brazilianite - $ 1500 SOLD Conselheiro Pena, Minas Gerais, Brazil (type locality 1945) miniature, 3.5 x 2.5 x 1.5 cm ex. Dr. Frederick Pough
Beautiful doubly-terminated tabular crystal of GEMMY brazilianite from the type find! And, it was obtained from Fred Pough who was largely responsible for the published description of the species and its nomenclature a few years later. The color is a lovely yellow, and the luster varies from pretty good on the sides to superbly lustrous and clear on the terminations and frontal faces. This is a very nice, and quite uncommonly fine, miniature. The contacted and etched back with minor muscovite attached actually adds sparkle to the crystal when lit. They were brought out by dealer Martin Ehrmann in the 1940s and remain to this day the standard by which contemporary brazilianites are held up to. This find is recounted in interesting detail in the excellent book by Dr. Peter Bancroft Gem and Crystal Treasures on pages 201-205. Cal Graeber obtained this piece in a laborious trade along with a small lot of others Fred conveniently found in his garage after all these years, around 1999 if I recall. I bought the lot and sold them at that time. As most folks who have dealt with Dr. Pough know, he rarely has any labels for his material (and those are usually scribbles on scraps of paper!) but I can vouch that it did come from his collection for what it is worth. BTW it is BETTER (more gemmy) in person!
bg03 - Brazilianite on Quartz - $ 3000 Tel韗io claim, Lin髉olis, Divino das Laranjeiras, Doce valley, Minas Gerais, Southeast Region, Brazil cabinet, 11.2 x 9.5 x 7.8 cm
A most unusual specimen with a 2.5-cm brazilianite crossing the termination of a gorgeous, jewel-like quartz crystal , totally water-clear and perched in albite matrix. The quartz measures about 8 cm tall and its termination is freestanding save for the crossing brazilianite atop. VERY dramatic and unusual specimen!
BG06 - Brazilianite on Albite - $ 9500 SOLD Telirio Mine, Divina, das Laranjeiras, Minas Gerais small cabinet, 6.9 x 4.5 x 2.9 cm
This crystal is a pristine, complete, translucent jeweel measuring 7 x 3 x 2 cm in size and perched atop a small natural pedestal of crystallized albite matrix. I think the pics say it all! It is SUPERB in quality and among the best brazilianites for the size range that I could imagine.
D06-219B - Brazilianite - $ 1950 Corrego Frio, Minas Gerais, Brazil thumbnail, 2.8 x 2.2 x 1.3 cm ex. Richard and Mary Nelson
Probably dating back to the finds in the 1940抯, this floater is a competition-quality thumbnail, of transparent, lustrous, doubly terminated, yellow-green, brazilianite. The back side of the crystal is totally covered by small blades of muscovite. The quality of the crystals form and color is simply not conveyed in pics. Formerly in the world class collection of former Dallas native Martin Zinn. Spectacular! It is much better in person...more glassy an dgemmy....
DEN11-384 - Brazilianite - SOLD Telirio Mine, Linopolis, Minas Gerais, Brazil cabinet, 10.0 x 7.5 x 7.2 cm
Perfection. Complete all around, this specimen simply dominates with its aesthetics and sparkle. Even the matrix is crystallized and sparkly. Quite simply, this piece is considered by many to be if not the finest, than among the top few examples known of the species from the modern finds of this style (which are quite different than the old style from the 1940s, from another locale). It sold for a record price back in 2001, and then sold again in the sale of the Fuss collection (in 2003). It then disappeared for a number of years until it came across my desk recently, right as the painting of the piece came out as the frontispiece in the Brazil book published by ExtraLapis in Germany. ex Sandor Fuss collection. GEMS-122 - Brazilianite - $ 195 Brazil thumbnail, 7.45 x 6.33 mm ; 1.88 carats Brazilianite is one of the most attractive gems out there, as the best stones truly do not resemble anything else. There are very few localities for gem material in the world, and Brazil remains the only country that produces fine stones with any consistency. This "Emerald" cut gem has a beautiful light greenish-yellow color and is only very very slightly included (it was very difficult to photograph but looks nice in person). I rarely have these stones available, so don't miss out on this one.
HBRU-09 - Brazilianite - $ 9000 Corrego Frio Mine,Doce valley, near Conselheiro Pena, Minas Gerais, Brazil (TYPE LOCALITY) miniature, 5.4 x 4.0 x 3.6 cm ex. Helmut Bruckner
A stunning, complete-all-around crystal from the original material found in the 1940s and early 1950s, still characteristic and distinct to this day compared to later finds at nearby pegmatites. The crystal has an extraordinary amount of gemminess to it and could cut probably most of its specimen value in stones were we to butcher it. However, this is also a very rare thing for the find - most of these old brazilianites are rather one-sided for some reason, chopped off on one side or contacted flat on the back. This one, however, is complete ALL around and is a 360-degree crystal showing all faces, set atop a recessed inward-grown brazilianite pedestal and a bit of muscovite matrix. The lustre of the faces is teh best, extremley glassy and bright. The color intensity, a strong green-yellow hue, is totally unique in the mineral world and frankly superior to any brazilianite found since as far as I am concerned. This specimen came from the Kontrus collection, a collection that peaked in the 1950s and 1960s: As noted on the label, this piece was brought to him by the geat broker of the time, Martin Ehrmann.
J11T-123 - Brazilianite (circa 1940s) - $ 1800 Corrego Frio, Minas Gerais, Brazil thumbnail, 2.6 x 2.1 x 2.1 cm ex. Dr. Frederick Pough
This crystal is MUCH MORE GEMMY in person. The photos do ot convey well the spectacular color or the special gemminess of this piece. It is actually fairly valuable just for gem rough. The lustre is glassy and bright, and the piece is complete all around except only the bottom periphery. It is a super thumbnail with pizzazz you can see from far away. This crystal is from the collection of Dr Fred Pough, former curator of the American Museum around World War II, and popular author of the Field Guide to Rocks and Minerals, first published in 1953 . He was involved in the original find, and handled some of the specimens as they came out in the 1940s and 1950s. . MUCH BETTER IN PERSON
