A VERY SHARP, 1 cm bornite crystal perched nicely at the edge of a crystallized quartz plate. It is very uncommon to get them on crystal quartz from here, and that makes all the difference between "nice" and "superb" in my book. It is pristine and perfect save for one small contact or bit of edge wear on a back-left face. Trimmed to a thumbnail, this will be steallar for precisely that reason.

These crystals are very sharp for English bornite, and reach in size to 2.0 cm across. They are perched on a translucent shard of crystallized, colorless quartz xls to 1.0 cm are several crystals of metallic gray, lustrous, pseudocubic crystals of bornite. The isolation of the bornite is highly unusual and aesthetic. While the specific mine name has been lost to history, this specimen is from the collection of Dr. Eric Asselborn, owner of one of Europe�s finest collections. This came from a trade with the BMNH and that he had been told "Carn brea" at the time (as a general area, rather than the specific mine).

The Dyck collection was well known for an extremely diverse selection of species, including many significant locality pieces, that showed unusually good aesthetics. This is pretty for "what it is," in other words, or they wouldn't have owned it - but the piece also had to be significant from its find or locality as well. I enjoy the merger of the two criterion, and in owning significant historic pieces which also look good on a shelf such as we have here. This large 3.7-cm bornite crystal is sharp and very fine for the locality with an unusually good lustre for this mine. It probably came out in the heyday here in the 1960s-1970s, and Butte today remains a classic locale for which many collectors cherish specimens. The mines here produced what certainly are the best bornites ever found in the US. Here, we have one that is as I said not only significant, but highly aesthetic as well. This one is likely from the Stewart Mine. ex. Mel and Grace Dyck Collection

A superb, aesthetic miniature with extremely sharp bornites to 1/4 inch perched on a rolling, 3-dimensional matrix! This is one of the best examples in its size we have seen for sale, for overall quality and aesthetics both. The patina is intact, and not unduly cleaned by chemicals as it too often happens. The crystals are sharp and not worn or rounded, also too common. ex Robert Whitmore collection, obtained from Phil Scalisi in the past when he was selling the Grace Dearborn Collection (an heiress who assembled an excellent collection specializing in the classics in the early 1900s).

Betekhtinite is rare enough here. Bornite crystals of an inch on edge are completely unheard of in my experience, though some to 1/2-inch are seen often enough (or were, rather, in the heyday here as a military mine). This remarkable specimen is a huge crystal of bornite that is altered to the very rare species betekhtinite. It is aesthetic, and complete all around. I have never seen the like

This collection came to light at the Denver show, and was preserved since the 1950s intact. Russell Jones appears to hav especialized in English minerals and had some very unusual pieces. Among them, i thought this treelike cluster of 3-dimensional, thick bornites to be exceptional for the aesthetics of the piece overall; and the exquisite accent of the complete and sharp bornites crowning the specimen mostly made up of unusual elongated bornite crystals that stand up and splay out like branches. It thus has two very distinct crystal habits, here. It is quite hefty, and very aesthetic, in person!

16.5 x 10.2 x 4.8 cm. An amazing large specimen of beautiful Siderite blades and balls, associated with gorgeous tiny rosettes of Bornite and other sulfides. The Siderite has a rich brown color, and the blades reach about .8 cm, while the balls are on the order of millimeters. Good luster, too. On the other hand, the small radial crystals of the Bornite and sulfides reach perhaps .4 cm in size, but their luster and color is absolutely incredible.

5.1 x 4.1 x 1.9 cm. Now here is a wonderful old Butte classic - a rich specimen of sharp, triangular crystals of tennantite, with gunmetal luster, on a base of bornite (with minor associated chalcopyrite). This is old material from an classic American mining locality!

16.9 x 5.6 x 2.9 cm. This is a very large and relatively thick sheet of natural silver, sturdy and not wimpy and thin, that is still attached to a chunk of bornite ore. Both the ore and the silver have a beautiful, colorful iridescence (did not show up well in the photo) from the bornite. This was likely a thin vein of silver filling a crack in the matrix ore that was then exposed by the miners, who retained some of the ore with the silver sheet. From the classic Mexican mining locality of Zacatecas.

4.2 x 3.6 x 2.8 cm. This is a showy and rich, 3-dimensional cluster of sharp, dodecahedral bornite crystals to 1.2 cm on a bit of quartz-rich matrix. The steel-gray crystals are nicely lustrous and many of the crystal faces look partially melted, a common occurrence for Butte bornite. Butte bornite compares favorably with most worldwide localities and this is highly representative specimen of the species and famous locality. Classic, old-time material from the John Ydren Collection.
