An unusual goshenite specimen from this briefly-mined claim, now sadly exhausted (at least for practical purposes, and without a lot of dynamite). The CG produced a huge variety of gem crystals in its brief lifetime in the late 90s and early 2000s, among them this fine miniature from the "goshenite pocket" . A stoudt single crystal is accented by schorl tourmalines here. Unusual!

A MAJOR piece for the locale! This is a special morganite, and the only good one I have personally seen for sale from this locality. It is a sharp morganite, of a crystallographic quality normally reserved for Afghani material…and almost unheard of from County. The white albite association in particular makes it look Afghani, though is is not.

A beautiful set of unusual gemmy crystals that nobody really would believe was from the County if it came with anything other than the pedigree of the biggest County collector and miner of our time. All have glassy lustre, and glisten, in person. Bill Larson collected these specimens himself at this now-defunct locality, which is now part of Indian casino land.

This large cabinet piece has a central, robust, 8 x 6 cm crystal of beryl, perched without repairs on a very well trimmed matrix. It is one of the best, most aesthetic examples from the late 2007 finds here. These are some of the most interesting matrix beryls we have seen since the 90s, and they have a distinct barrel shape and multihued color to them. This single crystals is blue, pink, and clear all at the same time, in different zones. It is glassy, and has a good termination. Bill Larson helped the miners clean and prepare the pieces from thispocket, and this specimen, and one other slightly smaller example as well, were his choices from that pocket to keep. This was actually one of the last specimens added to the Pala San Diego collection, just before its sale to me.

Wow! Any large hexagonal crystal of morganite from San Diego is a rarity, and desired. Few come from any mine but the White Queen during the mid to late 1900s. But this one comes from a mine generally known only for tourmalines, and thus this was a freak find there (dug by Edward Swoboda and Bill Larson in the early 1980s and kept for their company collection). It is the only one like it I have seen, and is really quite a distinct, 3-dimensional crystal in person. It has a rich pink color. The surface is mildly etched, but still retains clear hexagonal symmetry and has great lustre - the etching just makes it more reflective in a case. 361 grams. NOTE THIS CRYSTAL is etched on the bottom, but completely a floater now because of that dissolution growth under it...complete all around!

This oustanding specimen from the 1960s-1970s heyday here is both aesthetic and fine in quality. It is not repaired. It features a rich pink 4 x 3.5 cm crystal of GEMMY morganite, perched on contrasting white matrix. Not only is it on contrasting matrix, but it is on contrasting CRYSTALLIZED matrix. Some morganites from here are embedded in lumpy matrix of massive cleavelandite , not this one! The contrast to teh bladed cleavelandite and the prismatic quartz is striking, geometrically, and gives the composition of this piece a boost from "just nice" to the level of a very high quality. The pink color in this crystal is exceptional for the mine and comparable to modern morganites from Pakistan in color, whereas most White Queen morganite, even teh famous Houston piece, is a bit paler in comparison. The upper photos contrast the piece (minimally) backlit and sitting in flat room lighting. As you can see, not much light at all is needed for an internal glow to be dramatic. The crystal is gemmy, pristine, and complete save for contact on the back where it grew agains tmatrix we removed to trim the piece down in size from the way it has sat for the last 30 years. Larson obtained this from the mine owner, Norm Dawson, in the 1980s.

This translucent to transparent crystal of morganite is from a final held-back portion of the collection of Peter Bancroft, world renowned mineralogical author. This morganite is rich pink, very lustrous and is highlighted by two deep green, elbaite crystals, to 2.0 cm in length, the terminations of which are exposed, while the bottom portions are impaled into the morganite. In addition, there is a band of drusy, tan lepidolite crystals that wreathe the right side of the morganite. The back side has been contacted and there are a few minor dings on the periphera but these do not affect the quality of this specimen. The display face shows complete, as you can see; and is quite impressive as this is almost a cabinet specimen. The color, in person, is a very dramatic, showy, classic morganite-pink. His is only the second such morganite I have ever seen for sale with tourmalines impaled within, from this part of Brazil. Usually they form in quite distinct sections of a mine, and the combos that are famous are from the Urucum mine and quite different in aspect from this specimen. RARE!

Without question the world’s finest emeralds are from Muzo, Coscuez, and Chivor in Colombia. This emerald specimen features a richly saturated, deep emerald green, lustrous and gemmy, emerald crystal which measures 2.0 cm in length. If this crystal had been any gemmier, it would have been relegated to cutting material. Thankfully, it is gemmy enough that we like it as a specimen but it survived the cutters! It is funny that if i were to buy a contemporary example of this material, i'd have to pay more than what i am charging for this antique one which came ot me as part of an old collection?!

A rich, gorgeous pink-colored crystal from this classic mine which only rarely produces morganite! This is similar to one shown in the recent Beryl issue of Lapis, from finds in the early-1980s. THIS IS A HUGE single crystal with fine luster. Areas of transparency highlight this gem crystal although it is too thick to be transparent, per se. In spite of being contacted around the bottom and rear of the specimen, the size, color, and transparency of this piece is breathtaking and more than makes up for it. In a display case, it GLOWS out at you. This is a hugely significant piece , thus, for its gut-impact value as well as its form and rarity for the locality.
