GLASSY, transparent crystal with riveting blue color! Hard to photograph, but it is much nicer in person. This is a classic, surely from teh 1800s 2.2 x 0.9 x 0.9 cm
This is a gorgeous matrix specimen featuring a 2.5 x 1.2 x 1.2 cm emerald crystal perched on the side of an attractively balancing matrix. THE CRYSTAL IS AN INCH LONG!! It is so transparently clean that you can look right through it, for the upper two thirds at least. Even the bottom third is still fairly gemmy and translucent, looking in through it to the matrix beyond. It has a sharp, clean termination, smooth to the touch although with some minute ingrown matrix particles within the surface. Gem emeralds of this calibre, on matrix. This is one of two specimens from a new find, which were sold directly to me by a source in Colombia, and I got them cheaply and am passing it on. I cannot recall having as nice a matrix emerald for the price. Note as an added bonus that the matrix of massive calcite on hard rock iscovered by sparkling, glistening, needle-like crystals of selenite. This seems to be characteristic of this new find, and it is a quite unusual and attractive accent to the usual calcite matrix from here! 9.1 X 7 X 4.1 cm
This is a second gorgeous matrix specimen from this same recent and unique matrix find, featuring a 2 x 0.8 x 0.75 cm emerald crystal perched attractively against contrasting matrix. THE CRYSTAL IS ALMOST AN INCH LONG!! It is so transparently clean that you can look right through most of it, looking through it to the matrix beyond. It has a sharp, clean termination, smooth to the touch and pristine. Gem emeralds of this calibre, on matrix, usually sell for over five figures. This is one of two specimens from a new find, which were sold directly to me by a source in Colombia, and I got them cheaply and am passing it on. Note as an added bonus that the matrix of massive calcite on hard rock iscovered by sparkling, glistening, needle-like crystals of selenite. This seems to be characteristic of this new find, and it is a quite unusual and attractive accent to the usual calcite matrix from here! 8.2 x 3.9 x 4.8 cm
This fat, dramatic crystal is one of the largest, sharpest single crystals I have seen for the locality to date. It is sharply formed and very symmetric. The termination is lustrous, and really neat to look at because of the included schorls - not too many, and not too few. A small bit of matrix gives it contrast and presence. 7 x 3.6 x 3 cm (150 grams)
This specimen looks like nothing so much as a large aqua constricting around a smaller one. Both have extremely complex, unusual, elegant terminations. The juxtaposition of the two nested terminations as you rotate the piece, viewable from any angle, is striking. IN PERSON, IT IS MORE LUSTROUS, TRANSLUCENT/TRANSPARENT, and just plain GEMMY than it appears in teh pics! The piece also has included within it, diagonally from the bottom, a 1 inch schorl crystal just going straight up into its gut, for extra accent. This is from a new find, I am told. 120 grams. 8 x 3.5 x 2.5 cm Note: The mineral deposits around Alchuri are alpine metamorphic-type. With cleavelandite and schorl, this beryl is obviously from a granitic pegmatite and likely from elsewhere in the Shigar Valley. (Jesse Fisher, Nov. 8, 2006)
This specimen has striking aesthetics, high lustre, and a gemmines sand transparency that are very rare in Nagar aquamarines. In fact, my first thought was that it was infact a Shigar Valley piece but the muscovite rosettes are a dead lock on nagar material. It is unrepaired. It is complete all around save for a bit of natural contact on the BACK of the downwards termination. It is thus pristine and completely crystallized all around. The crystal is also amazing to me in that it is symmetrically mounted on the natural pedestal of matrix in just the right balance like a teeter-totter. I mean, what are the odds?! Any bit to either side and it would look lopsided. Note that the termination ends are also sharp and lustrous, and glassy (THE SHOT FAILS TO SHOW THE TRUE BRILLIANT GLASSY LUSTRE AS IT IS IN REAL LIFE). On the backside are a few darker aqua crystals , above the muscovite matrix and clinging to the back of the major crystal. 9.3 x 6 x 4.6 cm
This specimen is from a pocket found in the fall of last year, where they all tapered in a smooth curve to a truncated point, like this one. However, this is the biggest intact example of a single crystal I have yet seen from the find. It is very unique, in its aesthetics. Complete and fully terminated all around! 11.7 x 1.9 x 1.4 cm
A complete-all-around, 360-degree duet of perfect gem crystals! Most of teh specimen is so transparent you can read through it. In fact, it is MUCH MORE GLASSY and MUCH MORE BRIGHT, in person, than the pics make it out to be. They are a pale image of this extremely bright and flashy specimen, but its so gemmy that the camera has a hard time, given the size and thickness, capturing focus on teh surfaces as it keeps traying to focus on the middle of the piece. I have seen VERY FEW LARGE SHIGAR AQUAS of this magnitude, that are free of damage and so complete. No repairs, no restoration, just naturally perfect...it is an extremely rare event in nature and , given all that is going on over there , getting harder to find such beasts. I picked this up from somebody who travelled over there personally and had the good fortune to amortize this in a large deal, plus to buy it before it was fully cleaned. 14.6 x 5.5 x 3.1 cm
This monstrous old crystal, surely form the 1960s or perhaps the early 1970s, weighs in at 1500 grams ! It is an incredible showpiece GLOWING with juicy pink color: NOT the typical pale peachy or pink-orange morganite, but rather a rich, electric, sparkling PURE PINK hue like you almost never actually see. The glasssiness and transparency of the crysatl are phenomenal and you can literally look right into it. PICTURES DO NOT CONVEY the quality of the piece, though they are good shots and accurate nonethless/ Because of the size and shocking value of the color, it simply has to be seen in person. Within the morganite is a core of aquamarine, which you can clearly see through the overlaying pink. Also included inside are , at the edge of the aqua core, 3 sharp little purple lepidolite crystals! I have NEVER seen lepidolite so nicely included within a morganite as this. There is a small , shallow conchoidal dip in the top leading edge, but its not all that obvious visually. Of the 6 sides of the perfect hexagon, 4 are present and the lower two partially contacted, but again this does not detract visually. Certainly given the size and isplay impact a few small imperfections can be overlooked, especially at the price range since it is not priced to the moon. 14.5 x 13.7 x 6.5 cm
This monstrous matrix aqua features a 5-inch (12.5 cm!) crystal perched nicely amongs and rising from clear quartz and albite matrix, with schorl for accent. It has a complete, lustrous, sharp termination and superb glassiness and transparency throughout the body of the crystal. The combination of size and stark contrast makes this one of the most dramatic aquas for the price I have seen for sale. It does have one repair, but lower down just above the join with the quartz, and not so easily visible. In context, as well, its minimal. The crystal has really attractive, interesting inclusions of small feathery sprays of what I think might be hematite , inside. Never seen... 19 x 13.5 x 6.9 cm
This is a VERY LARGE, PRISTINE, SUPER GEM crystal of aquamarine, jutting up dramatically from the matrix! The crystal measures almost 2 inches or 4.5 cm in height, and a substantial 2 cm across. It is absolutely gemmy, with a frosty phantom starting about one centimeter down! The termination is perfect. YOU CAN LOOK RIGHT THROUGH IT. If you look very closely as with any specimen, and I mean with a magnifying glass, you can see a couple of micro-dings - but this crystal is basically in pristine condition. This superb specimen can be easily trimmed into a small cab if you prefer. 14.1 x 10.0 x 7.3cm
A SUPERB, pristine, 5.3 cm, GEM, pink morganite crystal jauntitly perched upright on dark green tourmaline-coated, bladed albite matrix from the famous 1973 find at the Corrego do Urucum pegmatite in Brazil. The C-axis side faces are gem-clear on both sides, and the other crystal faces are frosted. Corrego do Urucum morganites remain one of the most sought-after world-wide morganites. Ex Ed Ruggiero Collection. 8.7 x 8.2 x 6.3 cm
The emeralds from Jos can get very large but like this one are usually under-saturated in color. That said, they are infinitely gemmier than their Colombian cousins and exhibit a deeper blue-green color. In addition, they are more interesting from a crystallographic viewpoint, with lovely bi-pyramidal terminations. This particular emerald weighs 9.12 carats and displays a slight color change near the top end of the crystal. BETTER AND MORE GEMMY IN PERSON! 2.6 x 0.6 x 0.4 cm
While these crystals certainly are not gemmy as for good Columbian ones, note that this is an old BRAZILIAN emerald specimen - far more rare! The accompanying index card shows that it was purchased 30 years ago from Pala Properties, and that it had come out of the Robert Rich collection. The best crystal in this cluster measures 2.5 cm, with well-defined faces and termination. Gorgeous and unusually freestanding cluster, ex Ruggiero collection! 3.9 x 3.3 x 1.3cm
Three GEMMY, bright green emerald crystals in matrix, from a locality in Afghanistan that has turned out FAR fewer emeralds than the famous Columbian ones - these are much more rare on the specimen market as most are sold quickly for gem and cabbing rough. This valley was disputed heavily during the afghan civil wars because of its importance in generating funds from the mining. now, it has been producing specimens a little more regularly. The largest crystal here measures 2.5 cm in length and is TERMINATED. These crystals have wonderful color! 6.1 x 4.7 x 3.7cm
