Beryl (Var: Morganite), Albite (Var: Cleavelandite) from Konar (Kunar; Konarh; Konarha; Nuristan) Province, Afghanistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-41706a.jpg]

A beautiful crystal with a bit of matrix to accent, showing superb, deep pink color - not the typical pale pastel hue! It is also a very 3-dimensional, fat crystal with exceptional sharpness. The crystal is translucent, more so in person than it appears, but not truly gemmy. Complete on front and sides, contacted only on the bottom. 5.7 x 4.5 x 3.4 cm

This polished aquamarine contains a full, doubly-terminated tourmaline within it! I cannot say as I have EVER seen a significant tourm-in-aqua inclusion at all, and yet here is a whole darned crystal contained within a pale blue mass of aqua, frozen as if in ice. It is really a bit prettier in person. 4.4 x 2.8 x 2 cm

This super crystal sits on just the right amount of well-trimmed matrix, to accent and highlight the rich natural blue color. It is in the higher percentiles for color, and is complete and pristine all around. I would say its one of the best matrix aquas of this size, that I have had in the price range. The crystal measures 5.5 x 2.2 x 1.8 cm. 5.4 x 4.5 x 2.7 cm

This is a sizeable spray of EIGHT fine, gemmy aquamarine crystals, ranging up to 6 cm in length! There is one dinged termination of a larger crystal, and a couple of dings below the terminations on the back side, but as you can see, nothing that detracts too much from the frontal display view of this STUNNING, GEMMY, BRILLIANTLY BLUE cluster of glassy crystals. And i mean GLASSY! mostly this specimen is extremely beautiful and impressive. Note the quartz crystal perched amongst the aquamarines at the top! What an accent! 6.1 x 3.7 x 2.5cm

A REALLY STRANGE, matrix, unrepaired aquamarine that looks as if it is about to rocket off the matrix from its connecting stalk of aqua-fire. This whole crystal, solution-etched uncharacteristically from the bottom up to form a tapered crystal in the reverse of the usual habit, is complete all around. It is very gemmy and the micro-faces on the sides give it a real sparkly look. The termination is lustrous, glassy, and complete. You can display this a number of ways to look at either the whole ethereal crystal, or to stare down through the termination, through the narrowing stalk of aquamarine, to the matrix beneath: literally, you can see almost ALL THE WAY DOWN through the 3-inch crystal to its insertion point in the matrix ! it actually pokes through and comes out the other side, about 1 cm in diameter at that point. And this confuses the heck out of me. How could it etch out in such a way, tapering from the bottom up, if the very bottom is embedded in matrix?! Maybe the albite grew simultaneously, enclosing the crystal as it formed in solution? VERY STRANGE, in any case! 9.4 x 7.9 x 5.6 cm

This is the first of two unusual Chinese aqua specimen I obtained in a freak lot of such cherrypicked, showy oddities that I was extremely happy to get ahold of. The large crystal, for scale, is about 2 inches (5 cm) across. I will say up front that most Chinese aquas do not appeal to me, as they tend to be pale to begin with and then flattishly laying about upon matrix, and thus lack the pizzazz of Pakistani or Brazilian beryl crystals. Then again, the Chinese aquas have form going for them that sets them apart from just about any aqua from another locale: namely, this exquisite, sharp, hexagonal form more often seen in morganites from other localites (again, Afghani and Brazil here for comparison), rather than with aquamarine. Why this should be the case, I know not! This piece, in any case, has decent color enhanced by thickness since it is proportional to depth it seems (for China: moderate for Pakistani), and the sharp form, but it is more importantly displayed in such a way that the form is emphasized by the fact that it is such an unusually rich, 3-dimensional, arborescent cluster of sharp hexagonal crystals! Lastly, it has glassy lustre and is pristine, AND complete 360 degrees around as shown displayed vertically....in sum, its one of my favorite Chinese beryls out of literally hundreds I have seen! It stands out for the quality, but also for the unique form and style. This, in a crowded field, is what ultimately makes for a truly superb specimen from a large contemporary find. 9.6 x 6.3 x 6.3 cm

This is an unusually GLASSY and gemmy crystal, with killer lustre at the top percentile for the locality and rarely seen! It has reasonably strong blue color for the locality (about equivalent to moderate color for a Pakistani aqua), that is intensified by the unusual thickness of this crystal. The crystal is about 4.5 x 4 x 3 cm in size and stands sharply and perfectly upright on well-trimmed matrix. It is complete and undamaged, pristine . Seldom do you see such upright, well-formed crysatls from China, exhibiting the sharply hexagonal, c-axis-truncated form that makes them nearly unique among aquas and so different in form from older material from other places. 8.2 x 5.7 x 5.1 cm

A most unusual , elegant, TAPERED crystal of aqua curbing gracefully to its termination. Also, teh bottom end is crudely terminated so technically this is a doubly-terminated floater 8.3 x 1 x 0.8 cm

This amazing combination specimen has absolutely NO REPAIRS (i assure you on this)! This is almost impossible, you'd think, given the apparent exposure of the crystal to the elements. It came out in a very large piece, which was then trimmed down to size, preserving the central core and the protected crystal. The crystal measures 11 x 2.5 x 2.25 cm in size, or about 4.5 x 1 x 1 inch! It is very interesting in its own right, aside from the sheer insanity of the combo aesthetics. This crystal is the product of complex solution events that have given it a very interesting pattern, like a cityscape, around all the hexagonal faces of the side. The top termination, however, is unaltered in form , though it seems to have a secondary oriented coating of micro-aqua that gives matte finishes to some alternating faces. It is hard to describe, but I think the pics do it best anyhow in this case. 15.2 x 11.4 x 10.2 cm

This showy specimen features a 7 x 4.5 x 2 cm aquamarine crystal perched on starkly contrasting matrix of crystallized feldspar. It is a large and impressive specimen. The aqua is repaired (one clean join at its midpoint). It has great clarity and rich blue color crystal. 17 x 10.2 x 7.5 cm
