Beryl (Var: Morganite) from Araçuaí, Jequitinhonha valley, Minas Gerais, Southeast Region, Brazil [db_pics/mdpics/MD-34659a.jpg]

This stunning, unique gem morganite specimen was released from the personal collection of a Brazil-based collector/dealer who was able to cherry-pick specimens from the prolific production out of Minas Gerais over the years. It was by far the most unique specimen I found at the show, and is just incredibly striking. Two flattened, hexagonal gem morganite crystals have grown side-by-side, and inside each of them is a sharp, hexagonal phantom ROTATED ON ITS AXIS by 30 degrees or so from the crystallography of the enveloping morganite! The faces on the bottom and back right side of the specimen are slightly incomplete due to removal from the pocket, but as you can see, the specimen can be displayed to minimize this and really you don't see the slightly rough rear-right edge anyhow. Just one crystal like this would be fascinating, but this piece consists of TWO matching crystals that formed side by side under the same unique pocket conditions, showing the same phantom growth inside with the same rotational offset! I have never seen anything quite like this, in ANY species. 4.8 x 3.4 x 1.7 cm

This very unusual; crystal features a 4.5 x 4 x 2.2 cm haxagonal top perched atop a 5 cm stalk of etched beryl. It is extremely unusual in appearance and although it has some edge wear and edge damage here and there presents quite nicely. 5.6 x 4.4 x 3.9 cm

Beryl (Var: Emerald) from Coscuez Mine (Cosquez Mine), Muzo, Vasquez-Yacopí Mining District, Boyacá Department, Colombia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-34669a.jpg]

Just a huge, fat, glowing green emerald! It is rather crude in the back due to some contact and damage on the back faces, but is fully terminated and displays impressively. It has very good, even color, quite dark actually, and is transparent or highly translucent through about 75% of the crystal. Given the thickness, this is exceptional! In sum, it LOOKS like a very expensive piece, but is not. 3.3 x 3 x 2.3 cm

These just seem to get bought as soon as they appear, at almost any price. The claim is covered up and not productive. Few are left on the market. And when you think about it, there is a good reason for it: these red beryls are infinitely more rare than green beryls (emeralds), and even with the prices having gone up as they have, are still not priced any higher! This is a LARGE crystal measuring a full centimeter across the top ( and 1.3 cm in length). It is terminated on top and still attached to matrix on the bottom, well-exposed overall. Most of the crystal is bright red and has good gemminess. 7.9 x 4.9 x 5.5 cm

Beryl, Beryl (Var: Aquamarine) from Nagar (Nagir), Hunza Valley, Gilgit District, Northern Areas, Pakistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-35227a.jpg]

Encapsulated in silvery muscovite mica, the gemmy, light blue, lustrous aquamarine crystal reveals itself like a piece of fine sculpture. This rather large aqua has a near pristine basal termination which is 3 cm across. It is lustrous and has a typical Nagar steely blue color. It is complete, except for some minor contacting on teh back face. IN fact, looking now, it is also doubly-terminated with the tip extending through the muscovite and appearing at the base 6.2 x 4.7 x 3.3 cm

Beryl (Var: Morganite) from Minas Gerais, Southeast Region, Brazil [db_pics/mdpics/MD-35880a.jpg]

This freeform, partially dissolved morganite beryl presents as a colorful, vibrantly glassy and colorful piece. It stands on its own. Although exhibiting extremely lustrous crystal faces over a portion of this specimen which reflect light from just about every angle (MAKING IT MUCH MORE LUSTROUS IN PERSON THAN IT APPEARS), there is some contacting on the bottom and lower portions of the sides, I think - it is very hard to tell given the processes of resorption and rehealing evidently at work in the pocket. The uniformly rich, pink color and the depth of transparency along with the unusually large size, make this piece very rare and showy as i have seen similarly formed AQUAMARINE from the area, but not so in teh way of larger morganites. Weight: 193 grams. 8.3 x 5 x 3.5 cm

Beryl (Var: Emerald), Quartz (Var: Smoky Quartz) from Hiddenite, Alexander Co., North Carolina, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-37037a.jpg]

Rarely will you get the chance to acquire a fine Hiddenite emerald, and this beauty has all the attributes to make it special even amongst others that have come out. MATRIX SPECIMENS ARE ALMOST UNHEARD OF, and I have NEVER seen even a single crystal of this apatite-like form and neon color. It is surely an older specimen! The two intergrown, tabular emeralds have superb luster, an excellent mint-green color, good clarity, and even some unusual and attractive zoning along the c axis. The contrast as it is perched upon the termination of a smoky quartz is both aesthetic and , to my knowledge, incredibly rare on emerald specimens from this locality or any other. Both crystals are contacted on the back, but this does not affect the display face and pales compared to the importance of this specimen both as a locality piece and as a competition-quality miniature of such unique aspect. The aesthetics and rarity combine to make this a "killer miniature." 4.5 x 3.1 x 2 cm

An exquisite miniature with a wonderfully-perched, nearly 2 cm crystal just sitting there staring at you, fully exposed and yet firmly anchored at the same time . This is a superb miniature of a mineral that can only go up and up oin valaue as it came from one locality, now defunct. 4.1 x 3.8 x 1.9 cm

I have seen a LOT of matrix Nagar aquas over the years but THIS one is truly special for the robust color, extreme gemminess and brightness, and incredible aesthetics of the "flower" on matrix...the pics convey it pretty well, but it is still BETTER in person I would say 14 x 10.2 x 6.8 cm

With such good color, gemminess, and form, this would be a great emerald specimen from anywhere modern; but to have such from an old classic locality in the Urals makes this a true killer. It is also a 3-dimensional and well balanced thumbnail of exceptional showiness and color. It is the gemmiest such crystal I have seen for the locality. It is glassy as all get-out and is complete all around. Pics just do not do it justice! 2.2 x 2 x 1.6 cm

EXCEPTIONAL LOCALITY PIECE for this old and classic beryl locality! The lovely color, form, and gemminess of this Aqua belies the fact that it comes from a defunct old locality, especially compared to the Californias and Pakistans of the world. All the more reason to appreciate this little beauty for the high-quality thumbnail that it is. Complete all around and BETTER IN PERSON. 2.9 x 1.3 x 1.3 cm

A good Morganite is on everyone''s list, and this has something for everyone: good form, a light pink color, glassy luster, and it is absolutely gem-clear. Killer locality thumb. Good gem rough, if you prefer. 2.8 x 2.6 x 1.3 cm

Beryl from Tanco Mine (Bernic Lake Mine), Bernic Lake, Lac-du-Bonnet area, Manitoba, Canada [db_pics/mdpics/MD-38068a.jpg]

A HUGE, 10.0 cm, lustrous, pearl-white, Cesium-rich beryl crystal on LARGE CABINET pegmatite matrix from the Tanco Mine in Manitoba, Canada. The mine closed in 1982. The crystal is contacted on one side, but is damage-free and is very large and well-formed otherwise. OK, its ugly BUT extremely rare and significant in the world of beryl collecting, or for a Canadian collection. Choice material from the Lewadny Collection. 16.2 x 12.5 x 10.3 cm
