Beryl (Var: Aquamarine), Schorl, Feldspar Group from Erongo Mountain, Usakos and Omaruru Districts, Erongo Region, Namibia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-264174a.jpg]

7.5 x 5.5 x 3.4 cm. A dramatic, elongated aquamarine is aesthetically perched on an ivory-colored feldspar crystal, angling into the middle. It is accented by clusters of schorl and aquamarine, which make for wonderful contrast and serve to enhance the freestanding 3-dimensionality above. The aquamarines are glassy and gemmy, and are intensely-colored a vivid blue. Moreover, the largest aquamarine which measures 5.7 cm in length is also doubly terminated and pristine. The schorl crystals are lustrous, black and reach 1.5 cm in length. From the new find of late summer 2009.

5.5 x 5.4 x 4 cm. This is another fine combination specimen on feldspar but with really different style. The highlight of this piece is an intensely colored, glassy and gemmy, doubly terminated, blue aquamarine crystal that is 5 cm across. It has associated "rabbit ears" as accents on either side. As we have seen with other aquamarines from this find, the terminations are gemmier and slightly less intense blue than the centers which are less gemmy but a deeper blue. The main aquamarine crystal is pristine while the smaller ones have minor wear at the terminal edges. From the new find of late summer 2009.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine), Quartz, Muscovite from Mt Xuebaoding, Pingwu Co., Mianyang Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China [db_pics/mdpics/MD-265779a.jpg]

11.6 x 11.4 x 7.6 cm. Aquamarine from Ping Wu is really quite unique compared to aquamarines form other locales, for its sharp hexagonal crystals that look like morganite from other localities, in habit. Most Ping Wu aquamarine is pale, pastel, or just plain colorless. Good specimens with this intense color, a rich sky blue, are uncommon and desirable. This piece has large crystals to 7 cm, mixed with quartz and on muscovite matrix. The crystals richly cover the matrix, making for a very 3-dimensional specimen. They are gemmy, glassy, and mostly transparent. This is superb specimen, way beyond the norm. Weighs 660 grams.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine), Muscovite from Nagar (Nagir), Hunza Valley, Gilgit District, Northern Areas, Pakistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-265783a.jpg]

11.3 x 11.1 x 7.8 cm. This is a modern classic combination piece of gemmy, glassy aquamarine perched on metallic, silvery muscovite. It is 870 grams in weight. The larger crystals are 4 to 5 cm tall and are arranged dramatically in a flower-like cluster centered in the middle of this well-trimmed specimen. Note how sharp and fine the terminations are, very clean and clear, so you can look down into them. The display face is nearly pristine. Overall, this is a good size, unusually compact and aesthetic for a Nagar aquamarine plate, and with unusually high quality of lustre and color saturation for this locality.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine) from Erongo Mountain, Usakos and Omaruru Districts, Erongo Region, Namibia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-266144a.jpg]

6.8 x 6.2 x 4.3 cm. An aesthetic cluster of rare, green-tipped aquamarine crystals from a recent, one-time find in the Erongo Mountains. Each of the gemmy and lustrous crystals have good color, become gemmier toward their terminations, are partially included and have a distinctive 2 mm zone of green at their terminations. The thin, elongated crystal is 5.3 cm and has a pristine termination. The schorl below it is a nice accent. This is the second Erongo aquamarine with green tips that we have seen, in the years of mining there.

6.7 x 5.6 x 3.9 cm. A rich pink morganite crystal from Afghanistan. The gemmy and lustrous, hexagonal crystal is a complete-all-around, undamaged floater, but is unetched to heavily etched, with frosted faces. Most of the frontal face and part of the top face is water-clear and you can look right into the center of the crystal. All of the other faces are etched and frosted. A highly representative, fairly large example of the species and locale. Weighs 186 grams.

15.9 x 10.9 x 9.4 cm. An impressive, architectural, 3-dimensional, large cabinet combination specimen from recent finds at Shengus, Paksitan. Large, up to 3.5 cm, gemmy and lustrous, cherry-red spessartine garnets are nestled amongst or flank a striking parallel-growth cluster of pearlescent, silvery muscovite blades. One side hosts a dramatic T-shaped, combination cluster. A 7.0 cm wide cluster of gemmy spesartines caps a 5.8 cm tall, lustrous and striated schorl crystal. There are even a couple of gemmy aquamarine crystals to 1.7 cm and quartz crystals hidden amongst the muscovites. The whole piece rests on snow-white albite.

5.2 x 4.3 x 3.7 cm. The classic locality of Val Vigezzo in Italy is one of the more unique localities in the European Alps. It's an interesting pegmatite locality that is most well known for its Emerald specimens, but it also produces Zeolites, metallic oxides and even rare-earth species. This piece is a classic Val Vigezzo Emerald featuring a prismatic, light green, hexagonal crystal measuring 1.5 cm on matrix. Ex. Brian Kosnar Collection.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine) from Sawtooth Batholith/Sawtooth Mts, Boise Co., Idaho, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-266434a.jpg]

2.8 x 0.7 x 0.6 cm. This aquamarine specimen was mined by Richard Kosnar in the late 1970's and his diggings produced some of the finest color, unheated Aquamarine in the world. Most of these crystals are not gem quality, but this crystal is approximately 90% gem clarity, which is very good for the material. This crystal is a fine, sharp, gem/gemmy, slightly hydrothermally etched, rich blue color crystal of Aquamarine from one of the more obscure localities for the material in the world. One simply does not see these specimens offered very often on the market anymore. Ex. Richard Kosnar Collection.

6.1 x 5 x 3 cm. Emplaced on ivory-colored feldspar are lustrous, black schorl crystals, to 2.0 cm in length. Perched on the schorl are a few glassy and gemmy, intensely colored, blue aquamarines, to 4.25 cm in length. This is a piece with great contrast and superb quality, totally representative of the contrasting association that will make this pocket remembered. From the new find of late summer 2009.

Beryl (Var: Heliodor) from Palermo No. 1 Mine (Palermo #1 pegmatite), Groton, Grafton Co., New Hampshire, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-267004a.jpg]

4.5 x 4.0 x 1.9 cm. Golden beryl (heliodor) is rare from the Palermo No. 1 Mine of New Hampshire and is extremely rare in this size. A 3.2 cm crystal with rich, yellow color and textbook, hexagonal form is very aesthetically set in albite matrix. The termination area is very gemmy on this lustrous, complete-all-around crystal and the lustrous pinacoid surface has an interesting, scalloped look. This is an outstanding large golden beryl crystal from this noted locale and was self-collected by Robert Whitmore in the 1980s.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine) from Lam Dong Province, Vietnam [db_pics/mdpics/MD-267172a.jpg]

4.5 x 1.1 x 1.0 cm. A totally gemmy, transparent and beautifully blue aquamarine crystal from a very uncommon Vietnam locality. The crystal is partially etched and frosted, which gives the unusual look. The termination, though, is water-clear and you can look straight down the C-axis. A striking specimen. Vietnam aquamarines of this caliber are rare and this is one of the better specimens in a lot I had from a visiting mining engineer. Weighs 10 grams.

Beryl (Var: Emerald) from Muzo Mine, Muzo, Vasquez-Yacopí Mining District, Boyacá Department, Colombia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-270085a.jpg]

2.9 x 1.4 x 1.2 cm. This is a superb crystal with the best color, exceptional gem-grade gemminess to the top 1/3, and association with calcite to make it a fine "matrix-y" specimen instead of just another loose single as we so often see. The crystal has intense color, diminished slightly by the stunning clarity in the top portions but still very impressive, such that for combination of qualities I rate this very highly. The crystal is sharply hexagonal with exquisite form, complete-all-around save for one teeny ding on a back edge of the termination.

3.8 x 3.2 x 2.5 cm. This fine miniature features a sharp, deep green, 13 x 10 x 10 mm crystal perched nicely in contrasting matrix. It is not of gem rough caliber, but does have a lot of transparency and brightness and is certainly a worthy specimen. Ex. Jack Halpern Collection.
