Beryl (Var: Emerald), Calcite from Muzo Mine, Muzo, Vasquez-Yacopí Mining District, Boyacá Department, Colombia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-262233a.jpg]

4.0 x 3.8 x 2.8 cm. This glowing green emerald crystal is as thick as a finger and very dramatic. It measures 1.5 cm across and is just over 2.5 cm long complete, and then a bit longer with a slender tapering into the matrix. It has top, glassy lustre and a rich color that is very desirable in an emerald. The termination is wonderful, and has a few intricate bevels on the side by way of accent. The black calcite provides the best possible contrast and visual enhancement of the deep green hue, on emerald specimens, and this matrix is very rare. You would think that white works best as background but, in fact, the black calcite somehow visually enhances the green hue of the emerald.

Beryl (Var: Morganite) from Teófilo Otoni, Mucuri valley, Minas Gerais, Southeast Region, Brazil [db_pics/mdpics/MD-262452a.jpg]

8.2 x 5.5 x 3.8 cm. This is a bizarre specimen from a different part of Brazil than we normally see producing morganite. This area is better known for topaz and other gems. The crystal has at best a peachy color, not quite pink, but it is colorful and a true morganite. It is gemmy right through the middle and has a matte-finished, opaque rind around the edge which actually serves to enhance the visual effect of the startling, see-thru gemminess elsewhere. Above this "rind" is another, thin, gemmy layer of translucent to transparent beryl. The net effect of this is to create a "phantom" inside. If I did not get it from Gene (a beryl specialist for a long time with investments in mining in Brazil!), who got it from a Brazilian dealer 30 years ago, I would swear this was Afghani material of an unusual color. But, it surely is Brazilian. Ex. Dr. Eugene Meieran Collection.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine), Garnet Group from Shengus (Shingus), Haramosh Mts., Skardu District, Baltistan, Northern Areas, Pakistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-26308a.jpg]

A STRIKING, glassy, transparent to translucent aquamarine crystal with included garnet crystals from Pakistan. The upper 2.5 cm of the aqua is GEM-clear! A trivial amount of termination edge damage is barely noticeable. Moreover, it is only RARELY that you find garnet crystals included in aquamarine from Pakistan (or anywhere for that matter). I have continued trying to put one or two really fine gallery-level pieces in each auction and this is yet another. It is QUITE impressive in person... 6.3 x 2.4 x 2.1 cm

Beryl (Var: Red Beryl) from Violet claims, Wah Wah Mts, Beaver Co., Utah, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-263161a.jpg]

2.5 x 2.2 x 1.8 cm. A very deeply-colored 1.4 cm-long crystal, perched smartly in solid matrix and not the usual crumbly matrix. The crystal is doubly terminated. It is complete save only a minor contact or damage spot on the back-rear of the left-hand termination. It displays magnificently with light coming through each end, as they are freestanding. Ex. Sam Nasser Collection.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine) from Shigar Valley, Skardu District, Baltistan, Northern Areas, Pakistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-263201a.jpg]

8.4 x 0.7 x 0.5 cm. When it comes to Aquamarine, Pakistan is the most productive country for specimens in the modern age of mineral collecting. Some of the very finest quality Aquamarine specimens come from the various pegmatites in the Pakistani Himalayas, especially in the Shigar Valley. This crystal is a very good quality, sharp, gem quality "pencil" with good luster and a soft blue color. Ex. Richard Kosnar Collection.

Beryl from Minas Gerais, Southeast Region, Brazil [db_pics/mdpics/MD-263830a.jpg]

3.0 x 2.4 x 1.8 cm. A gemmy and lustrous green Brazilian beryl crystal with a very glassy, transparent termination and very unusual, lightly frosted sides. The crystal has textbook, hexagonal form. The termination is pristine. Complete-all-around. Old-time material, probably from the 1960s or 1970s from the Robert Whitmore Collection. Weighs 27 grams.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine), Schorl, Feldspar Group from Erongo Mountain, Usakos and Omaruru Districts, Erongo Region, Namibia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-263848a.jpg]

7.1 x 4.5 x 2.8 cm. A fine combination specimen from the new find in August, 2009 in the Erongo Mountains. The gemmy and lustrous aquamarines have robust blue color and as usual, the termination areas are very gemmy. The stunning crystal at the peak is 2.7 cm. The schorls are very lustrous, striated and jet-black. The two large primary crystals are pristine, while their nearby compatriots having trivial bruising.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine) from Mt Antero, Chaffee Co., Colorado, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-264028a.jpg]

5.4 x 2.9 x 2.7 cm. Mount Antero is the locality in Colorado for gem species. Large Mt. Antero aquamarines such as this are very uncommon and are seldom available. This complete-all-around crystal has excellent gemminess and lustre, with good color. The internal crazing adds character to the sides and very glassy termination on the piece. This is a historic old-timer, having been in the John Ydren Collection. His card indicates, that he acquired the piece in May, 1965. Weighs 58 grams.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine), Schorl, Feldspar Group from Erongo Mountain, Usakos and Omaruru Districts, Erongo Region, Namibia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-264166a.jpg]

8.4 x 8.2 x 6.2 cm. Even amongst so many unusual association pieces from this pocket, this is a very elegant and unusual combination specimen. An ivory-colored feldspar crystal (slightly etched but sharp enough) extends above the lustrous, black schorl crystals (to 3.5 cm across), and is transected by a doubly terminated, glassy and gemmy, intensely-colored, blue aquamarine crystal measuring 6.2 cm in length. That long aquamarine shows both terminations fully freestanding, and is nearly pristine. Other aquamarines play a minor role as accents. From the new find of late summer 2009.

12.3 x 9.1 x 6.4 cm. Ivory-colored feldspar hosts lustrous, black schorl in crystals to 2 cm in length. These then form the matrix for a carpet of thick, glassy and gemmy, intensely colored, blue aquamarine crystals that shoot out all over the place. At the cluster atop, they reach 4 cm in length. The lustre and color are superb, for this pocket and the locale as a whole. From the new find of late summer 2009.

9.3 x 4.3 x 4.1 cm. This is a very sculptural, unlikely assemblage: A cluster of aquamarine crystals exhibits "en echelon" growth on smaller schorl crystals and a bit of matrix host (ivory colored feldspar). The two largest aquamarine crystals, to 5.5 cm in length, are doubly terminated, and all are glassy and gemmy with an intense blue color. The schorls are lustrous, black, and reach 1.5 cm in length. From the new find of late summer 2009.

6.8 x 6.6 x 6.4 cm. Nearly a complete floater, this specimen features intergrown, lustrous, black schorl crystals, to 2.5 cm across, upon which rises a pristine, single, thick, glassy and gemmy, intensely-colored aquamarine crystal. An absolutely elegant specimen. The large upright crystal is 3 x 1.5 x 1.2 cm in size. From the new find of late summer 2009.

12.8 x 7.8 x 4.8 cm. What makes this combination specimen of schorl and aquamarine special is that it also contains two spear-like crystals of smoky quartz, to 4.5 cm in length. Quartz seems rare in this pocket at least. Furthermore, this plate of feldspar matrix is smothered by lustrous, black schorl crystals to 2.75 cm across; and a bevy of glassy and gemmy, intensely-colored, blue aquamarine crystals to 4.0 cm in length. Finally, the right side of the specimen is coated liberally by hyalite opal. From the new find of late summer 2009.

10.9 x 8.2 x 5.1 cm. This specimen is highlighted by large, intergrown, lustrous, black schorl crystals, to 2.5 cm; and glassy and gemmy, intensely-colored, blue aquamarine crystals, with one to 6 cm in length. The three largest aquamarine crystals are doubly-terminated and pristine. From the new find of late summer 2009.
