Beryl (Var: Red Beryl) from Violet claims, Wah Wah Mts, Beaver Co., Utah, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-230518a.jpg]

1.4 x 0.5 x 0.3 cm. A beautiful, cranberry-red, thumbnail red beryl crystal cluster from the Violet Claims in the Wah Wah Mountains of Utah. The "smokestack" crystal is fine and the crystals have excellent gemminess and textbook, hexagonal form. The bit of attached matrix is a nice accent. Ex. Ed Braiman Collection. Weighs 1.84 carats.

Beryl (Var: Morganite) from Vanderberg Mine (MS 5391; Vanderburg; Vandenburg; Naylor-Vanderburg; K.C. Naylor Mine; Sickler; Naylor Rock), Hiriart Mountain (Heriart; Heriot; Hiriat Hill), Pala District, San Di [db_pics/mdpics/MD-230535a.jpg]

11.7 x 8.9 x 7.3 cm. A fine, very rare, large, old-time cabinet morganite specimen from the less well-known Vanderburg Mine of San Diego County. The gemmy and lustrous, 9.0 x 3.4 cm, vivid pink crystal is partially complete with some damaged faces on the sides; and partially contacted. It rests atop a matrix of cleavelandite, pink lepidolite and quartz. This impressive specimen also has a very interesting history. Arch Oboler (1907 – 1987) was a playwright, screenwriter, novelist, producer, and director who was active in radio, films, theatre and television. He is regarded today as one of the innovators of radio drama in the 1930s. When the Oboler collection was sold, it went to well-known collector Marion Stuart. Marion lent the piece to the L.A. County Museum and it later sold to another collector.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine) from Shengus (Shingus), Haramosh Mts., Skardu District, Baltistan, Northern Areas, Pakistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-23143a.jpg]

A substantial (92 grams), incredibly gemmy aquamarine – so gemmy, in fact, that you can look through the top termination, through 5 1/2 cm of aquamarine, and read typed letters with absolutely NO DISTORTION. The termination is glassy and pristine, and the form is textbook. The bottom is mostly terminated as well, with just a couple of shallow chips. On some of the side faces are strange and interesting growth patterns. A really exceptional aqua! 5.4 x 3.3 x 2.8 cm

A gemmy, doubly-terminated, 2.2 cm aquamarine crystal perched right at the top of a stalk of matrix - exquisitely trimmed this way without damage! Very fine quality for an Erongo specimen, and beautiful form for an aqua specimen from anywhere! 3.0 x 2.1 x 1.3 cm

1.7 x 1.6 x 1.5 cm. Beryl of any sort is relatively rare from the Little Three Mine of California. This complete all-around, pristine, hexagonal thumbnail beryl has light, pastel-pink morganite interior highlights to accentuate the mainly goshenite beryl. The tiny smoky quartz is a nice accent. Ex. Carl Davis Collection.

3.4 x 2.1 x 1.8 cm. A fine, gemmy and lustrous aquamarine crystal from Mt. Antero, Colorado. The aquamarine is complete-all-around and pristine and has excellent blue color saturation. The crystal has textbook hexagonal form, but interestingly, is not a perfect hexagon. It also has a nicely modified pinacoidal termination. Ex. Harry Maines Collection.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine), Muscovite from Aliabad, Hunza Valley, Gilgit District, Northern Areas, Pakistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-232950a.jpg]

14.2 x 7.8 x 7.2 cm. Each of the crystals on this matrix specimen is superb in gemminess and transparency, with glassy lustre. They exhibit fine transparency and rich blue color. Both measure about 4 cm tall and 3.5 cm across the width of the terminations. However, the leftmost crystal is a normal hexagonal prism, a stereotypic beryl crystal. The rightmost is truncated on the depth axis and so is compressed, creating a starkly contrasting geometry to the crystal on the left. Why this should be, is hard to explain - usually beryl crystals on the same matrix plate would have identical habits and it is rare to find otherwise. The crystals rest in, and are complemented by, a nest of muscovite blades that covers underlying base rock.

4.0 x 3.9 x 3.5 cm. A 2.2 cm, gemmy and lustrous, raspberry-red beryl crystal aesthetically set on starkly contrasting porphyry matrix from the Wah Wah Mountains of Utah. This is the only place on the planet to find such crystals and it is, for all rational intents, defunct now. This is a fairly large, complex, doubly terminated crystal. The angled sidecar crystal is a nice accent to this specimen.

8.4 x 5.0 x 2.0 cm. This is a rare, fine goshenite from the Erongo Mountains in Namibia. These have smooth, glassy faces with crackly interiors, and not a bit of blue color to be seen; they are true goshenites (a lot rarer than aquamarines). The biggest crystal here is 2.2 cm long. This is an excellent and very rich plate, nicely accented with lustrous, black schorl crystal clusters.

Beryl (Var: Emerald) from Muzo Mine, Muzo, Vasquez-Yacopí Mining District, Boyacá Department, Colombia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-233190b.jpg]

4.2 x 4.2 x 3.1 cm. An unusual, large emerald crystal on matrix from the Muzo Mine of Colombia. This gemmy and lustrous, unusually green-blue crystal is complete-all-around and is pristine. It is 2.7 x 2.0 cm, has textbook, hexagonal form and is set in shale matrix. The lustrous, little pyrite crystal is a very nice accent. The shale inclusions must be the coloring agent in this unique crystal.

2.8 x 1.6 x 1.1 cm. A fine and representative thumbnail of two gemmy and lustrous, cranberry-red beryl crystals set in rhyolite matrix from the Wah Wah Mountains of Utah. The larger, partially coated crystal is 1.0 cm. The smaller crystal is just a perfect, little jewel-like red beryl with great color and gemminess. Classic material.

6.0 x 5.0 x 1.8 cm. This is one of the oldest and most significant Emerald mines in the world. This area has been mined for Emerald specimens for approximately 1000 years. This piece features somewhat translucent, rich emerald green color, "stubby" crystals of Emerald on schist matrix. The crystals are somewhat gemmy in areas, and are reasonably attractive when viewed close up.

Beryl (Var: Red Beryl) from Violet claims, Wah Wah Mts, Beaver Co., Utah, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-235617a.jpg]

4.1 x 3.6 x 3.5 cm. A fat crystal of excellent lustre and color, and moderate gemminess especially near the tip, sits atop a cluster of smaller, weathered crystals (not broken or damaged per se). The large crystal is 2 cm, though only 1 cm sticks up above the cluster fully. Ex. Irv Brown Collection.

1.9 x 1.8 x 1.7 cm. This area of Utah produced the finest, largest red beryl crystals in the world. This particular crystal features a 1.5 cm, doubly-terminated, gemmy and lustrous crystal perched on white rhyolite matrix. It has glassy lustre and excellent internal brightness that is rare in the species. Ex. Irv Brown Collection.
