Beryl (Var: Emerald), Quartz from Hiddenite, Alexander Co., North Carolina, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-225182a.jpg]

4.0 x 3.3 x 2.3 cm. This is a slender 1.1-cm-tall emerald crystal, incredibly gemmy (especially for this locality), glassy, and perched on quartz matrix. A classic. This came in a collection dating to about 1984 at latest, so it is from old finds here and not modern mining efforts.

Beryl (Var: Heliodor) from Strickland Quarry, Collins Hill, Portland, Middlesex Co., Connecticut, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-22572a.jpg]

An important heliodor for this defunct old classic US location because it is a)gemmy/translucent and b)unrepaired and c)of large size for such a high quality specimen. This is not the prettiest heliodor, but it IS one of the more significant old pieces for what it is, that I have had. It is from the noted collection of Connecticut specialist Ed Boucher 4.5 x 1 x 1 cm

Beryl (Var: Red Beryl) from Jets Nos. 1-8 Claims (Harris Red-Beryl Quarry), Gillies Hill, Wah Wah Mts, Beaver Co., Utah, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-226179a.jpg]

4.7 x 3.8 x 3.1 cm. A beautiful 1.4-cm red beryl, well-exposed on matrix, from this unique locality which is the only source of large red beryl crystals on the planet, so far as we know to date. The locale is defunct, and more are not being mined at this time.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine), Muscovite from Mt Xuebaoding, Pingwu Co., Mianyang Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China [db_pics/mdpics/MD-226313a.jpg]

9.2 x 6.7 x 5.9 cm. This is seemingly your classic Ping Wu aquamarine assemblage, with sharp, tabular, hexagonal aquamarine crystals perched in golden muscovite. However, in person the aquamarine here is significantly more lustrous than usual, more shiny and glassy. The muscovite is more golden than the usual gray-hued colors you see from here. The major aquamarine crystal is 5 cm across. Ping Wu is within the national Panda refuge boundary and mining here has become increasingly restricted. Then, to make it worse for mineral extraction, this was the epicenter of the 2008 earthquake which destroyed so much infrastructure, and so many people’s lives and livelihoods in this region. The road to this mine was even shut down for a brief time. Ex. Dr. Stephen Smale Collection.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine), Albite from Shigar Valley, Skardu District, Baltistan, Northern Areas, Pakistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-226314a.jpg]

7.4 x 5.1 x 4.3 cm. This is a superb small cabinet sized specimen with a sharp, water-clear, aqua-blue crystal of aquamarine perched totally vertical and emerging from a mass of crystallized albite matrix. The aquamarine is itself 4 cm tall. It is complete, and terminated, though has a weird growth asymmetry/indentation atop which accents the normally flat and typical termination. This crystal has a micro-thin layer of secondary aquamarine crystallization over the surface of the crystal, giving it, in person, a slightly frosted and sugary appearance which is unusual. Ex. Dr. Stephen Smale Collection.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine), Albite from Erongo Mountain, Usakos and Omaruru Districts, Erongo Region, Namibia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-226379a.jpg]

5.2 x 5.0 x 2.5 cm. Gemmy and lustrous aquamarine crystals are artfully set, jackstraw-fashion, on both sides of the sculptural box-work matrix of casted feldspar. The striking, large, "sentinel" aquamarine at the top is 1.7 cm. A few of the smaller aquamarines are doubly terminated. The aquamarines are particularly gemmy.

5.8 x 5.0 x 3.6 cm. A classic, sharp, gemmy and lustrous, pastel-pink morganite crystal nicely set upright on cleavelandite and quartz matrix from recent finds in Nuristan, Afghanistan. The 4.1 cm morganite has textbook, hexagonal crystal form and is pristine on the front, top and sides. There are even a few, green, pencil tourmalines on the lower right as a further compliment.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine), Feldspar Group from Erongo Mountain, Usakos and Omaruru Districts, Erongo Region, Namibia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-228338a.jpg]

5.8 x 4.4 x 3.8 cm. An exceptional and very aesthetic specimen from recent finds at the Erongo Mountains of Namibia. Seven gemmy and lustrous aquamarine crystals to 3.7 cm are very attractively set, jackstraw-fashion, in a very complimentary matrix of corroded feldspar crystals. All of the aquamarines are pristine. They have exceptional gemminess for this locality and the color is a beautiful, rich blue.

6.5 x 5.7 x 5.7 cm. A very rare morganite from this small mine better known for aquamarines and the occasional tourmaline. Three graduated-size, gemmy and lustrous, tabular morganite crystals are intergrown in an interesting en echelon pattern. Three and one-half sides of the piece are well-crystallized. This is a large, highly representative and rare morganite from this locale. Ex. Chuck Houser Collection. Weighs 240 grams.

Superb, water-clear gem crystal , as i think is conveyed in the pics quite nicely. Note also the perfect, complexly bevelled termination! There are interesting inclusions in the lower 1.5 cm or so (schorl?) that add to teh visual value because they float so nicely and contrast with the blue aqua itself. weight = 23 grams 5.1 x 1.5 x 1.5 cm

This specimen features a superb, water-clear gem crystal , as i think is conveyed in the pics quite nicely. It is over 1 cm thick and it has a deeper-than-usual blue color to it despite the clarity (which usually dampes color). Note also the perfect, complexly bevelled termination! This crystal is perched upon a cluster of albite, the stark white of which enhances the aqua-blue color and makes this a very special piece. it is SO hard to find a truly GREAT aqua-matrix miniature. Mostly, teh killers are large specimens and priced highly of necessity, as well. This is one of the most striking aquas for its size, though, that I have ever seen. 5.4 x 3.6 x 3 cm

WOW! I think the pics pretty much say it all...this is a classic heyday-of-Pakistan specimen from the late 1980's (see the Tucson 1988 show poster for a similar example) that is just amazingly impressive in person. It is pristine, and complete 360 degrees all around. It has , if anything, better lustre in person and a rich blue hue that is near the top of the aqua color scale. This specimen had one loose crystal (a minor one in the back as I would display the piece) which wiggled off and has been reattached simply because it could be done so cleanly and easily. The piece looks fine without it, though, and the contact is clean, if you wish to remove that little crystal (lowermost crystal in upper-right picture). Weight=244 grams 10.4 x 4.1 x 3 cm

This is a doubly-terminated aquamarine from Jacqueto, now an infamous locality for this very unique sort of beautiful aquamarine crystallization. Most of them are either smallish and pricey anyhow, or so big and fat that they have to be priced as gem rough. This is the only one i have had that is a "good" price range so that I feel it is really a value for the price, AND is just plain large enough in size to have IMPACT. It is a beautiful SEAFOAM-BLUEGREEN BRAZILIAN blue color with some strange internal shimmers that add visual interest. It sounds silly to say, I know, but it really looks like the crystal from the Superman movie. The term's are perfect. The lustre is glassy. What more could you ask? Comes with custom lucite base, as shown. 18 x 2 x 1.75 cm (105 grams )

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine) from Chelyabinsk Oblast', Southern Urals, Urals Region, Russia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-23012a.jpg]

An important historical specimen from the classic old pegmatites of the Urals which produced the best beryls known to science for hundreds of years up until the discoveries in Brazil in this century. It is almost pristine (just a hardly noticeable shallow conchoidal fracture at one top edge) and is super-gemmy. In person it has a pronounced gradient of blue bands of slightly different hues, running vertically (characteristic of the localities there). Originally sold to me as from San Diego but we have shown by comparison it is not so, and is rather an ideal match in color and banding for the stereotypical russian aquas. 3.8 x 2 x 0.9 cm
