Beryl (Var: Morganite) from White Queen Mine, Hiriart Mountain (Heriart; Heriot; Hiriat Hill), Pala District, San Diego Co., California, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-208651a.jpg]

7.4 x 6.4 x 4.5 cm. A very interesting, floater crystal that is unusually trigonal in overall appearance. This is a classic White Queen color, a rich, intense pink hue like a normally ripe (but not over-ripe) grapefruit shade. It weighs 362 grams. The crystal is complete all around, all faces complete. The front "window" lets you to look into the depths of the crystal. The other sides, as is typical for this mine, are frosted and not so gemmy, which only serves to focus the eye and the light right into the core through the front. Ex. Norm Dawson Collection.

Beryl (Var: Morganite) from White Queen Mine, Hiriart Mountain (Heriart; Heriot; Hiriat Hill), Pala District, San Diego Co., California, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-208652a.jpg]

9.5 x 8.3 x 7.4 cm. This is a coke-can-sized single floater crystal, weighing 964 grams, complete all around, even if somewhat irregular in symmetry. It shows no "beryl-like" hexagonal faces clearly, but does show off large flat planar faces that are broad and gemmy to look into. These large side faces are flanked by unusual scallop-like minor faces at the bevels and sides. The crystal is huge for the White Queen, and has a rich, intense pink color that you seldom see here, probably it is volumetric, because the piece is so thick. It is a floater, crystallized on all sides - but unfortunately also with minor damage on all sides as well. Ex. Norm Dawson Collection.

3.9 x 3.4 x 2.8 cm. A cluster of emerald crystals from the famous Muzo emerald locality. They have fine clarity and good color, just a little too small for cutting anything but very small gems. They measure to 0.5 cm. Ex. Ida and Henry Mullane Collection.

Beryl (Var: Emerald), Magnesite, Quartz from Serra das Éguas, Brumado (Bom Jesus dos Meiras), Bahia, Northeast Region, Brazil [db_pics/mdpics/MD-208814a.jpg]

8.3 x 6.5 x 4.8 cm. A fine and aesthetic specimen from recent finds at Brumado, Brazil. A 3.6 cm, glassy, sea-green emerald crystal is attached to the side of two, diverging quartz crystals that are preferentially studded with gemmy magnesite rhombs. The smaller quartz crystal is water-clear and has a razor termination. It looks like cut glass. The large quartz termination was contacted against the top of the pocket.

My friend purchased this GEM of a crystal from Rex Harris, the claim owner, at Tucson a number of years ago because it was simply the finest single crystal, qualitywise, he had ever imagined. I have not seen better, to this day. True, it is definitely on the small side BUT it is so fine, and so astonishingly gemmy, that it stands out anyhow. The crystal measures about 4mm each dimension, and is pristine, perfect , and just plain brilliant. It certainly has one good cut stone inside of it, that is worth a good bit of money at the going rate of $1000 or more per carat in cutting value. 3.2 x 3 x 1.6 cm

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine) from Nagar (Nagir), Hunza Valley, Gilgit District, Northern Areas, Pakistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-209736a.jpg]

12.7 x 11.6 x 8.1 cm. This piece has a vibrant, beautiful "aqua blue" color to it that is at the top of the spectrum for an aquamarine from this particular locality. The largest crystal is 6 cm, flat-laying. More interesting are the broad, gemmy, terminations which are 2-3 cm across, and where you can look down into the crystal core. The lustre is glassy and bright. Weighs 1369 grams.

7.3 x 6.4 x 4.2 cm. A glass-clear, 1.5-cm "pencil" of aquamarine sticks up amongst euhedral crystals of snow-white albite. In back is a larger, fatter, un-terminated crystal.

3.6 x 3.4 x 2.4 cm. Though translucent and not cutter-quality by any means, this 1.7-cm emerald crystal is certainly good for China - which of course is not known for gem emerald material at any rate. It has bright green color and about half the crystal, with sharp faces, is showing above the matrix in which it is embedded.

8.4 x 6.8 x 4.8 cm. A chunky, gemmy and complete crystal of pale pink morganite, on a matrix of cleavelandite with thick books of large lepidolite crystals. This fat crystal measures 3.5 cm by almost 2.5 cm thick. It is wonderfully transparent through its interior, as evident through the two "windows" on the ends of the crystal, with frosted side faces. The pink is quite subtle, but it is pink.

7.5 x 4.4 x 4.0 cm. A superb combination specimen from the Shigar Valley of Pakistan. A gem, 2.8 cm, doubly terminated aquamarine crystal is attached to the side of a sharp, pearlescent, mica book, which, in turn is attached to the side of a sharp and lustrous, snow-white albite crystal.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine) from Sawtooth Batholith/Sawtooth Mts, Boise Co., Idaho, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-210606a.jpg]

2.7 x 0.5 x 0.4 cm. This Aquamarine specimen was mined by Richard Kosnar in the late 1970’s and his diggings produced some of the finest color, unheated Aquamarine in the world. Most of these crystals are not gem quality, but this crystal is approximately 90% gem clarity, which is very good for the material. This crystal is a fine, sharp, very gemmy, lustrous, slightly hydrothermally etched, rich blue color crystal of Aquamarine from one of the more obscure localities for the material. Ex. Richard Kosnar Collection.

2.4 x 1.1 x 1.0 cm. A gemmy, amazingly etched and sculptural, golden-yellow heliodor thumbnail from the Wolodarsk-Wolynskii pegmatites of the Ukraine. The form is outstanding and the crystal has beautiful striations. Ex. Irv Brown Collection.

11.9 x 11.8 x 7.8 cm. This is a superb specimen of aquamarine on matrix. It is a large, gemmy crystal that has wonderful form. The larger crystal measures 3 cm not only in height, but also across the termination. Growing into it is a 4-cm crystal, and there are a few smaller crystals nearby. The muscovite crystals are particularly large and well-defined, which adds a lot to the aesthetics.

Beryl from Albany, Oxford Co., Maine, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-213222a.jpg]

14.9 x 13.9 x 8.8 cm. This specimen is from a well-known old beryl locality in Maine, but you do not see many of the crystals around anymore. Here you have a lustrous, translucent crystal of 4.5 cm, with sea-foam green color, embedded but nicely exposed on a large matrix of quartz. One of the two terminations was left intact. This area produced some gigantic beryl crystals back in the day (though not of this quality and color; ugly, but big - one of them, found in the 1920s, was 18 feet in length).

6.4 x 5.0 x 3.6 cm. This is a stunning morganite specimen. The crystal is a real gem, transparent as you could ask for, with a wonderful pink color to it. But what is really interesting about the specimen is the way this gorgeous crystal is sandwiched between matrix and a shard of quartz. Its faces are sharp and perfect, and very lustrous; there is no damage on this crystal at all. The crystal itself measures 3.4 cm across. Ex. Wayne Thompson Collection.
