Beryl, Beryl (Var: Goshenite) from Himalaya Mine (Himalaya pegmatite; Himalaya dikes), Gem Hill, Mesa Grande District, San Diego Co., California, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-20380a.jpg]

This elegant etched beryl crystal tapers and is a floater, terminated at both ends. It glistens like wet glass! At first glance, you might think it colorless spodumene but these have been analyzed and proven to be beryl. A rare and unique specimen for the Himalaya where beryl is very uncommon: formerly from the collection of Tim Sherburn, who got it in 1982 while doing cleaning and prep work for mine owner Pala Intl. It was found in August of 1982. Not so ugly in person. 5 x 1 x 0.8 cm

An unusual beryl crystal , period! It has a pleasing pastel blue color, and an unusual silky lustre to it. It is somewhat rough, not smooth, and just all around weird. This was acquired from Chuck Houser in 2003 and is thought to be one of the best beryl crystals from this locality. 6.3 x 4.3 cm

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine), Albite from Shigar Valley, Skardu District, Baltistan, Northern Areas, Pakistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-203950a.jpg]

9.8 x 6.9 x 6.4 cm. A large, stunning specimen of gem aquamarine crystals on matrix. It features a fabulous 7.3-cm cluster of doubly-terminated crystals, tightly intergrown, perched on the edge of a matrix of euhedral crystals of albite. All of the crystals in this cluster are terminated, at both ends. The cluster evidently formed with its display side in the open space of the pocket, allowing the bottom terminations to be exposed rather than embedded in albite, so you can see the entire lengths of the crystals.

3.3 x 1.7 x 1.2 cm. A pure gem crystal of Russian heliodor, with the typical jagged faces and terminations. The camera had trouble picking up the pretty but subtle light yellow-green hue - there is more color to it in person. Weighs 7 grams. From the 1980s.

Beryl (Var: Morganite) from White Queen Mine, Hiriart Mountain (Heriart; Heriot; Hiriat Hill), Pala District, San Diego Co., California, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-205931a.jpg]

5.5 x 5.2 x 3.9 cm. A gorgeous pink, gemmy and lustrous, euhedral morganite crystal from the White Queen Mine of California. This fine crystal is from the personal collection of Norm Dawson, who owned and operated the White Queen from the 1948-1992. One face is water-clear, one face is water-clear and very lightly frosted, three faces are etched and one face is contacted. The crystal has classic, rich color and form. Weighs 191 grams.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine) from Padre Paraíso, Jequitinhonha valley, Minas Gerais, Southeast Region, Brazil [db_pics/mdpics/MD-206149a.jpg]

9.0 x 3.2 x 2.5 cm. Though not the gemmiest aquamarine crystal, it is rather large, it is complete all around and doubly-terminated, and it is from a mine you do not see a lot of specimens around from. The slender sidecar crystal is gemmy. Also, the side faces are very sharp and lustrous. You can see where the crystal has grown around bits of stark white albite. The crystal weighs 113 grams. From a new find.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine) from Gilgit, Gilgit District, Northern Areas, Pakistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-206338a.jpg]

7.0 x 2.8 x 2.1 cm. Two fine aquamarine crystals have grown side-by-side, attractively zoned with frosty bottoms and gem-clear tops. Both are terminated, but each termination has a bit of very shallow damage. The bottom is actually naturally-healed, the two crystals having broken off in the pocket and then healed at the break, so this is technically a rare doubly-terminated floater. Weighs 72 grams.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine), Muscovite from Nagar (Nagir), Hunza Valley, Gilgit District, Northern Areas, Pakistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-206936a.jpg]

14 x 12.3 x 6.7 cm. At 1500 grams and 6 inches in length, it’s the size of a large grapefruit or small melon. This doubly-terminated "cannon" shaped aquamarine is truly huge, but aesthetic despite its size. This is one of two great specimens that came together from a single pocket in 2007. The piece is complete all around, with no repairs, and only a small ding and a shallow contact/damaged spot on the lower-rear tip of the bottom. This doubly-terminated crystal is perched on a natural pedestal of bladed, roseate muscovite matrix. The unusually high glassy lustre, geometry, and gemminess (especially for the size, as most large Nagar aquamarines go more opaque) are superb.

8.0 x 1.6 x 1.2 cm. A large, gemmy, doubly-terminated crystal of aquamarine - with fine gemminess and nice glassy luster. Both terminations are weirdly etched, but complete and uncontacted. This fine crystal weighs 24 grams.

5.8 x 4.4 x 3.5 cm. A beautiful, 2.2 cm, perfect gem, aquamarine crystal with a striking, complex termination attached to a sharp, euhedral, pearlescent albite crystal. The small aquamarine is a very nice accent. Seldom do you see an aquamarine crystal on a super sharp albite crystal, such as this. Ex. Marty Zinn Collection.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine), Schorl from Erongo Mountain, Usakos and Omaruru Districts, Erongo Region, Namibia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-208641a.jpg]

7.9 x 6.2 x 3.7 cm. A rich, gemmy, cluster of vibrant blue aquamarines from 1990s finds in the Erongo Mountains. This locality surprised everybody in the mid-90s with its beryl production, and is likely to be looked back on as a true modern classic. This piece has a great 3-dimensionality, high lustre, and many good crystals on it. Unusually, the terminations are super-glassy - many aqua pockets from this region don’t have such good terminations. Ex. Dr. Edward David Collection.

Beryl (Var: Emerald), Calcite from Muzo Mine, Muzo, Vasquez-Yacopí Mining District, Boyacá Department, Colombia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-208645a.jpg]

4.1 x 2.5 x 2.3 cm. This beautiful matrix miniature hosts a 20 x 7 x 6 mm gem emerald crystal perched on contrasting white calcite, from the emerald mines of Colombia. This is not repaired, and not placed in the matrix, as you can clearly see the calcite grew around the crystal. At 2 cm, the crystal is good-sized. The color is intense and deep, vibrantly green. The association with crystallized calcite, instead of with rock or massive calcite matrix, though, really makes this specimen.

5.1 x 3.7 x 3.5 cm. This superb miniature specimen is a glassy, gemmy, transparent, glowing pink morganite crystal with exceptional color, perched smartly with bits of cleavelandite. The faces are sharp and smooth like glass, showing none of the typical etching one normally sees in morganites from here. As is typical for this locality , the front and back faces are glassy but some of the side bevels are of a duller, matte lustre - typical for the locality, in any case. Usually, only one gemmy frontal face shows and these tend to be buried in the matrix, thus making this exceptional for its display position which shows both glassy, clean rear and front faces. You can look right through it. Lastly, the specimen is virtually pristine.

Beryl (Var: Morganite) from White Queen Mine, Hiriart Mountain (Heriart; Heriot; Hiriat Hill), Pala District, San Diego Co., California, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-208649a.jpg]

9.8 x 9.0 x 5.5 cm. This large, 780-gram, crystal looks more Brazilian than San Diegan for its sharp hexagonal form and albite association, but it is definitely from the White Queen. It features a solid crystal on which, on the back, a plate of matrix albite still is attached. A thin plate of albite is attached to the left-hand face as well, sharply defining that side of the crystal by contrast. On the right-hand side, the crystal is terminated fully, though covered at the very edge by more contrasting white, albite matrix. These flanking bits of white albite on the back and sides serve to enhance the pink color in the core, visually, and help sharpen the look of the classic hexagonal form when seen in person. Ex. Norm Dawson Collection.

Beryl (Var: Morganite) from White Queen Mine, Hiriart Mountain (Heriart; Heriot; Hiriat Hill), Pala District, San Diego Co., California, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-208650a.jpg]

8.8 x 6.4 x 4.7 cm. This is a complete floater, crystallized all around with "etch effects" caused by resorption into solution after the crystal was formed which affected all edges, and weighs in at 267 grams. In person, this incredibly lustrous specimen glitters like it is made of glass that is covered with sugar, and has the rich pink color of a ripe grapefruit. The White Queen is known for generally sharp hexagonal crystals that are usually rather pale in color when compared to Brazilian or Afghanistan material from modern finds. Not so, this piece. Ex. Norm Dawson Collection.
