Beryl (Var: Heliodor) from Fianarantsoa Province, Madagascar [db_pics/mdpics/MD-157178a.jpg]

8.4 x 0.6 x 0.4 cm. A pure gem crystal, nearly flawless, of heliodor from Madagascar. It is elegantly slender, with sharp glassy faces. This fine crystal is actually technically doubly-terminated, with one natural termination and the other apparently broken off naturally and then healed while still in the pocket. This superb crystal weighs 5 grams. Incredible for the locality!

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine), Microcline from Espírito Santo, Southeast Region, Brazil [db_pics/mdpics/MD-157182a.jpg]

5.2 x 3.1 x 2.8 cm. An unusually shaped tabular aquamarine crystal sticks straight up off the matrix with a fine euhedral crystal of microcline leaning out from it at an angle, to create a really aesthetic specimen. The aqua is complete, undamaged, finely terminated and has good luster. Very odd, probably old specimen of Brazilian aqua.

5.2 x 4.2 x 2.4 cm. An OLD-TIME Austrian specimen of a 1.5 cm, glassy and gemmy, complex, light green emerald crystal nicely set on mica schist matrix. This showy piece is from the famous Habach Valley and comes from an old European collection, where everything dates to the 1800s. This whole collection had myriad old materials, though I cannot name the owner, and was well known in Europe. Accompanied by an old, handwritten German label with an 1874 date!

6.0 x 4.2 x 4.2 cm. A gemmy and lustrous, intensely color-saturated, 8 mm emerald crystal attractively set in mica schist on this historic, old-timer from the famous Habach Valley of Austria. SELDOM will you see two, antique, well-documented Austrian emeralds offered at the same time! And at auction!! This old-timer comes from an old European collection, where everything dates to the 1800s. This whole collection had myriad old materials, though I cannot name the owner, and was well known in Europe. Accompanied by an old, handwritten German label.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine) from Mt Xuebaoding, Pingwu Co., Mianyang Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China [db_pics/mdpics/MD-157558a.jpg]

5.0 x 3.1 x 2.2 cm. These specimens are some of the most unique and attractive Aquas from any locality. They have become some of the most distinctive and easily recognizable Aquas on the planet. Tabular Aquamarine crystals are rare, but some of the Aquas from Xuebaoding are absolutely superb quality to boot! This particular piece features very eye-catching, sharp, lustrous, gemmy light blue, unusually tabular crystals of Aquamarine Beryl measuring up to 1.1 cm sitting atop a crystallized matrix of porcelain white Feldspar and bladed Muscovite crystals. The quality is very good and the main Aquamarines are especially gemmy, when so many from this locality are essentially opaque. Ex. Richard Kosnar Collection.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine) from Shigar Valley, Skardu District, Baltistan, Northern Areas, Pakistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-157593a.jpg]

5.0 x 3.1 x 1.1 cm. When it comes to Aquamarine, Pakistan is the most productive country for specimens in the modern age of mineral collecting. Some of the very finest quality Aquamarine specimens come from the various pegmatites in the Pakistani Himalayas, especially the pieces from around Shigar. This locality has produced some of the most exciting Aquamarine specimens in recent years. This specimen features a few sharp, lustrous, gemmy, powder blue color prismatic crystals associated white Feldspar crystals. A very attractive matrix display specimen with great aesthetics and color contrast from this most prestigious of Pakistani pegmatite localities. Ex. Richard Kosnar Collection.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine), Schorl, Feldspar Group from Erongo Mountain, Usakos and Omaruru Districts, Erongo Region, Namibia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-158751a.jpg]

8.4 x 5.6 x 5.3 cm. A transparent, doubly-terminated, 3.5-cm aquamarine (along with some smaller ones) is intergrown with a large, doubly-terminated crystal of schorl tourmaline (with a fibrous termination at one end). The light-colored mineral is feldspar, which has formed an unusually sharp 4 cm crystal in diagonal growth, right next to the large aqua. Intricate and aesthetic! Ex. Charlie Key Collection.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine) from Shigar Valley, Skardu District, Baltistan, Northern Areas, Pakistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-158774a.jpg]

11.6 x 7.6 x 5.4 cm. This crystal has one well-done repair. Overall, this elongated gem crystal on a pedestal of matrix is just spectacular! And when you consider how long and slender this fine, gemmy crystal is, it is not all that surprising that it could not be taken out of the pocket whole, but rather that it survived at all. What is great about this specimen is not just the elegance of the aquamarine, but how it is perfectly set on the matrix. This is an 11 CENTIMETER crystal that is DOUBLY-TERMINATED; you can see the bottom termination clearly sticking through the thin matrix "base".

4.9 x 4.0 x 3.2 cm. A beautiful cluster! The top half of the 3.5-cm larger aquamarine crystal here is glassy-gemmy, as are the smaller crystals next to it. All are terminated (one of the little ones only has some edge-wear). They are accented by an aesthetic crystal of large muscovite crystals.

6.2 x 2.8 x 2.4 cm. A stunning specimen of a gleaming, striated crystal of schorl tourmaline, with the area just beneath the termination decorated with a one-centimeter doubly-terminated gem aquamarine and a couple of smaller schorls (each terminated on the inside end). The termination of the large schorl is rough and jagged, but complete and undamaged.

8.9 x 5.4 x 2.7 cm. This is a nearly cabinet-sized, super-impressive large aquamarine specimen, out of the collection of Joel Bartsch. It is transparent, very lustrous, complete, and beautifully terminated, and measures over 8 cm in length. What is nicest, I think, is how it has just the right natural matrix base to set it off perfectly. Other than some truly MICRO edge-wear, hardly worth mentioning since you have to really look for it, it is in superb condition. From the collection of Joel Bartsch, sold off when he became curator of minerals at the Houston Museum in the early 90s. Joel is now president of the Houston Museum.

4.4 x 2.4 x 1.3 cm. Red beryls, which come only from this locality, have become just astonishingly expensive; not surprising, because they are infinitely rarer than emeralds (green beryls); in fact, these are sometimes called "red emeralds." These are admittedly very small crystals (to 0.3 cm), but they ARE complete, lustrous and of the best color. There are a dozen crystals here in all.

Beryl (Var: Aquamarine) from Dache (Dassu; Dasu; Haramosh-Dassu; Dacha), Haramosh Mts., Gilgit District, Northern Areas, Pakistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-159361a.jpg]

7.3 x 2.9 x 2.8 cm. A stunning burst of gem-quality aquamarine crystals, with just a bit of accenting matrix at the base. The large terminated central crystal measures 5.5 cm, and is as clear as glass: pure gem material, as pristine as aquamarine can get. It is surrounded by slender gem crystals, all of which are either terminated or pocket-healed. There is a bit of accenting muscovite amongst the aquas. Ex. Dave Stoudt collection.

7.0 x 5.6 x 5.0 cm. Especially gemmy and intensely blue aquamarine crystals aesthetically set jackstraw fashion on feldspar matrix with lustrous, etched schorl crystal make for a SUPERB and AESTHETIC combination specimen from the famous Erongo Mountains of Namibia. The two large schorls are doubly terminated and interestingly, the upper terminations are etched, while the lower terminations are sharp. The large schorl is 3.0 cm. The aqua crystal quality is WAY ABOVE AVERAGE for typical Erongo aquas. ALL of the major crystals are pristine. Ex. Charlie Key Collection.

2.6 x 2.1 x 0.6 cm. A SUPERBLY aesthetic "cross" of two gem heliodor crystals SUPPOSEDLY from the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan. The heliodor crystals have beautiful color, outstanding gemminess and the doubly terminated horizontal "cross", with two parallel-growth crystals, is incredibly aesthetic. This COMPETITION-QUALITY thumbnail was formerly in the collection of elite thumbnail collector, Allan Young. Allan has won the Desautels Trophy at the Tucson Show for the “Best Rocks” with his thumbnail collection. Tajikistan heliodors are generally believed to be Pakistan aquamarines that have been treated to change/enhance their color to what you see, and that the locality doesn’t really exist as such except as a cover story (per my friends in Russian museums). Hence, I label it Pakistani by my choice in acknowledgement of this problem on the market.
