This is a very cute, contrasting matrix specimen featuring a 2 cm-long, doubly-termianted emerald perched on crystallized calcite. The large calcite is also 2 cm across. The balance and colors contrast nicely. The piece is very dramatic for the price and can be displayed from any number of angles. It is very 3-dimensional. I do not think i could replace it today for the price!

An intense-blue, very color-saturated aquamarine from new finds in Vietnam. The color is EXTREME, and reminds me only of a very few Jos aquamarines I have seen in the past, quite more robust than aquas from Pakistan or Brazil. This 39-gram crystal is complete all-around, 360 degrees. It is pristine and has a fancy, pyramidal termination characteristic of this pocket (from which I understand only about a dozen specimens were recovered). The exact locale is not yet able to be released, but it IS a new location distinct from the current locale which produces flat-topped aquamarines of a lighter, more typical hue. Joe Budd photos.

The color is EXTREME, and reminds me only of a very few Jos aquamarines I have seen in the past, quite more robust than aquas from Pakistan or Brazil. This 47-gram cluster of vertical crystals is complete all-around, 360 degrees. It is pristine and has a fancy, pyramidal termination characteristic of this pocket (from which I understand only about a dozen specimens were recovered, only a few of which were clusters like this). This specimen was pictured on the cover of the Nov-Dec 2009 Mineralogical Record issue containing a long article on this famous gem crystal mine. It is also pictured inside the article, shown after being mined. The piece is gemmier than most, sharper than most in form and termination, and retains a hexagonal shape unmarred by too much etching; and yet enough etching to give it the fantastically complex surface structure we love to see in these beryl crystals. It is absolutely pristine, and is doubly-terminated. Here is a stunning, large specimen of heliodor that is not just gemmy, but is TOTALLY 100% clean and of gem quality - two entirely different uses of the base word "gem" ! 532 grams mass - which is a LOT of treated, cutting-quality aquamarine rough in the gem trade (although one should never cut such a perfect crystal!) . Formerly in the collection of Daniel Trinchillo (known to keep great Russian pieces); and of collector Bruce Oreck. Joe Budd photos.

J12-495 - Morganite on Schorl - SOLD

Morganite on Schorl from Urucum Mine, Minas Gerais, Brazil [db_pics/new2011/Morganite-Brazil-168mm-JB495-20.jpg]

This is a large, impressive specimen of Morganite (pink beryl) from THE classic old find in Brazil, dated to 1965. The story of this find is related on page 200 of the book Gem & Crystal Treasures. Few specimens recovered had complete crystals on matrix, and of such transparency. Few have complete hexagonal form not overgrown by ugly matrix. Few are this size and condition. Few are in an aesthetic quality for the advanced collector. This crystal shows sharp hexagonal form, excellent color, bright luster, and transparency. And, it stands straight up from contrasting black matrix of tourmaline that accentuates the pink color and sharp form. These are highly sought after, and to obtain a freestanding single of this size on matrix should be considered a rare chance. Joe Budd photos.

An unusual specimen even amongst so many we have seen from this region in the last 20 years or so. This piece is complete all around, and has really nice, castle-like, sculptural aesthetics. The color on this one is unusual, being a more robust blue than is typical for these aqua/muscovite combination pieces! It has almost a surface sheen to it. This is a bonus...and makes it stand out to my eye among a crowd of other sharp hexagonal aquamarine crystals as a more unique specimen. It was last in the well-known collection of Dr Ed David, White House Science Advisor to our President Nixon. I bought it from him. Joe Budd photos.

This cute miniature features a sharp, deep green, 13 x 10 x 10 mm crystal perched nicely in contrasting matrix! It is not of gem rough calibre, but DOES have a lot of transparency and brightness and is certainly a worthy specimen without breaking the bank. For a specimen emerald, the color is quite intense and the price very affordable!

If I did not know the source 100% on this, I would have sworn this to be a Colombian or perhaps Afghani specimen of emerald. But i KNOW this came from Brazil and the trail is well documented, and I have to say i am genuinely surprised. This is a vibrant green, lustrous crystal of a rich green color - quite uncommon from Brazil. In person, it has more apparent lustre. The termination is unusual in that it is prismatic (if shallowly so) instead of flat as usual for an emerald. (obviously not a Jonas tourmaline but it fit in well with this update and was also at Munich...)

If I had to pick one miniature for sheer pizzazz, this would be it. The specimen features a really fine aqua with deep color, excellent glassy lustre, and complete all around....but its those associations that obviously make it outstanding and visually unique! Never have I seen a miniature from here with such interesting and unusual aesthetics, because of its associations with schorl and quartz. This full miniature is complete all around !

A stellar cluster of upright aquamarines, complete all around 360-degrees, that is perched smack on top of crystals of smoky quartz. Its amazing, really, that it grew this way and survived! The aquas are majestic, how they reach up to a multilevelled termination. It look slike a cityscape on a mountain!
