6.7 x 6.0 x 5.2 cm. Gemmy and lustrous, brown vesuvianite crystals to 6 mm richly and aesthetically line a very 3-dimensional, vuggy matrix, which are very nicely complimented by contrasting, green augite crystals. This fine specimen is from the less well-known Italian locality of Vedretta di Solda, in the South Tyrol Mountains. Ex. Rolf Wein Collection, a noted Alpine specialist, and collected in 1979.

5 x 3.1 x 1.4 cm. Fassaite is a rare Augite with low iron content, and the result is a crystal of augite that looks sharp and lustrous like hedenbergite. This is a superb floater, complete all around and pristine. Ex. Martin Zinn Collection.

Augite (Var: Jeffersonite) - Passaic Pit (Marshall Mine; Passaic Mine), Sterling Hill, Ogdensburg, Franklin Mining District, Sussex Co., New Jersey, USA

11 x 6.3 x 4.3 cm. This specimen is actually quite attractive for this augite varietal that has some aesthetics of geometry to it. It is sharply doubly-terminated, and not cracked and pasty as these tend to get. Jeffersonite is a zincian manganoan variety of augite, a clinopyroxene. Originally described from Passaic Pit (Marshall Mine; Passaic Mine), Sterling Hill, Ogdensburg, Franklin Mining District, Sussex Co., New Jersey. Ex. George Elling Collection.

3.7 x 3.2 x 2.1 cm. Jeffersonite is the very rare zincian manganoan variety of augite, a clinopyroxene and was originally described from Franklin. This aesthetic cluster of lightweight, brownish crystals is dominated by the large, sharply terminated crystal, which is, in fact, doubly terminated. Old-time, classic and seldom-seen material. Comes with an expertly handwritten, faded label from an older collection. The collection this came out of was a museum stash dating to prior to World War I.

Leucite, Augite - Roccamonfina, Roccamonfina Volcanic Complex, Caserta Province, Campania, Italy

Leucite is a relatively rare feldspathoid, and this is a classic for the species. The trapezohedral crystal is sharp, the color is good, and the luster very good. And the coup de grace is an Augite crystal embedded in the Leucite crytal that for all the world will remind you of Snoopy. Too cool. 2.5 x 2.3 x 1.8 cm

Augite - Eifel Mts, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany

The silicate augite is usually known as a non-descript, microcrystalline rock in gabbros and basalts, but occasionally in a few places in the world (one notable one is the Eifel area of Germany) formed good and sizeable crystals. This is an old specimen out of a German collection, with a well-formed 1.5-cm crystal on matrix. 7.5 x 5.1 x 3.9cm
