Striking and vivid plate of deep green Atacamite crystals with superb luster. These are much bigger and more 3-dimensioanl crystals than you normally see from the deposit todya, and indicative of a very old piece and style. The crystals can be in radial groups or individual blades. Mixed in with the Atacamite are small balls of darker-green Pseudomalachite and grass-green Olivenite, which provide a beautiful background contrast for the Atacamite crystals. Outstanding miniature of what is too often today just "wholesale color".
MD-122175 - Atacamite - - Archived La Farola Mine, Cerro Pintado, Las Pintadas district, Tierra Amarilla, Copiapó Province, Atacama Region, Chile miniature, 4.7 x 3.7 x 1.1 cm.
4.7 x 3.7 x 1.1 cm. A beautiful and showy plate richly covered with lustrous atacamite crystal pinwheels. The dark green radiating blades nicely compliment the lighter green needles and the minor bit of bruising is certainly not detracting to this very showy piece from the Type Locality region - the La Farola Mine in the Atacama Region.
MD-122196 - Paratacamite, Quartz, Chrysocolla - - Archived Lily Mine (Lilly Mine), Pisco Umay, Ica Department, Peru miniature, 3.7 x 3.5 x 2.3 cm.
3.7 x 3.5 x 2.3 cm. Lustrous, dark green paratacamite crystals floor a glassy, quartz-lined cavernous vug in beautifully contrasting powder-blue chrysocolla in this striking and gorgeous specimen from the Lily Mine of Peru. Paratacamite is a rare copper chloride and this is a super piece.
MD-122983 - Boleite, Atacamite - - Archived Amelia Mine, Santa RosalÃa (El Boleo), Boleo District, Mun. de Mulegé, Baja California Sur, Mexico small cabinet, 5.2 x 4.2 x 3.0 cm.
5.2 x 4.2 x 3.0 cm. A RICH, showy and uncommon combination specimen from the famous Amelia Mine of blue-green atacamite richly surrounding a well-placed cluster of lustrous, navy-blue boleite cuboctahedrons on stabilized clay matrix. This piece, from Ed Swoboda’s personal stash, while not particularly great looking, is RARE and desirable, because of the uncommon cuboct boleites and the richness of the atacamite.
MD-132230 - Atacamite - - Archived La Farola Mine, Cerro Pintado, Las Pintadas district, Tierra Amarilla, Copiapó Province, Atacama Region, Chile cabinet, 10.2 x 8.2 x 5.2 cm.
10.2 x 8.2 x 5.2 cm. One side of this specimen sparkles with a rich carpet of flashy acicular crystals of the copper-mineral atacamite, from the eponymous province it is best known from. If you look closely at these through a loupe, you will see that they are actually radial bursts of gemmy, lustrous little crystals of an intense forest green. VERY RICH specimen!
MD-147014 - Atacamite, Gypsum (Var: Selenite) - - Archived Lily Mine (Lilly Mine), Pisco Umay, Ica Department, Peru small cabinet, 6.0 x 5.3 x 4.7 cm.
6.0 x 5.3 x 4.7 cm. A STRIKING and showy specimen of green atacamite crystals embedded in and on water-clear selenite crystals on matrix from the one-time find at the Lily Mine of Peru, 6 to 8 years ago. The two vertical selenites, with atacamite, are stunning, as is the large, television-like selenite, with the atacamites visible in the interior, like a garden. Very nearly pristine, with only a trivial bit of bruising, mostly on the periphery.
MD-164042 - Atacamite, Gypsum - - Archived Lily Mine (Lilly Mine), Pisco Umay, Ica Department, Peru miniature, 4.2 x 4.0 x 2.3 cm.
4.2 x 4.0 x 2.3 cm. This is a classic, and now very hard to find specimen of Gypsum included and associated with gemmy, DEEP emerald green color, prismatic Atacamite crystals. The main Gypsum crystal is in excellent condition, showing a wonderful "sword"-shaped form, and is nearly water-clear throughout. Some of the Atacamite crystals are suspended inside of the Gypsum, but others are free-standing against the micro Quartz matrix, where they can be backlit to show their amazing color. The piece is in good shape overall, with some minor bruising which does not take away from the appeal or attractiveness. These specimens came from a one-time find at the Lily mine about 7-8 years ago, and are some of the most attractive "new finds" from Peru in recent memory. Ex. Richard Kosnar Collection.
MD-168148 - Atacamite - - Archived Mt Gunson, Stuart Shelf area, Andamooka Ranges - Lake Torrens area, South Australia, Australia small cabinet, 5.7 x 5 x 4 cm.
5.7 x 5 x 4 cm. A lovely and distinctive stalactite of beautiful forest green Atacamite. The specimen has three distinct lobes, all surrounding a piece of country rock. The base exposes the radial growth of the Atacamite, and there one can see the superb luster and interesting habit of the mineral. Ex. Charlie Key.
MD-171945 - Atacamite - - Archived Restauradora mine, Las Pintadas district, Tierra Amarilla, Copiapó Province, Atacama Region, Chile small cabinet, 9.1 x 7.0 x 5.7 cm.
9.1 x 7.0 x 5.7 cm. Named for its occurrence in the Atacama Desert of Chile, this solid nodule features chatoyant, dark greenish-black, bladed crystals and rosettes of atacamite, to 1.0 cm in length. Most modern specimens occur as flat-laying crystals on rock. This is a solid "boulder" of the mineral with fat crystal sprays on every side! Ex. Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences Collection, probably from the early 1900s.
MD-176720 - Atacamite - - Archived Wallaroo Mine, Kadina, Yorke Peninsula, South Australia, Australia small cabinet, 5.4 x 4.5 x 2.4 cm.
5.4 x 4.5 x 2.4 cm. From the early 1900s, this beautiful atacamite miniature has radiating crystals to 1.6 cm, in a nicely symmetric spray from the gossan matrix.
MD-176861 - Boleite, Atacamite, Malachite - - Archived Amelia Mine, Santa RosalÃa (El Boleo), Boleo District, Mun. de Mulegé, Baja California Sur, Mexico small cabinet, 5.1 x 3.8 x 2.1 cm.
5.1 x 3.8 x 2.1 cm. A very rare specimen of sharp boleite crystals to 5mm on solid matrix. The matrix is a mix of copper species that are very rare in this deposit, especially in association with the boleite. Ex. Martin Zinn Collection.
MD-199663 - Atacamite - - Archived Copiapó Province, Atacama Region, Chile small cabinet, 6.8 x 6.2 x 4.5 cm.
6.8 x 6.2 x 4.5 cm. This specimen is a historic atacamite from the type locality for the species (named circa 1801.) and is a style found only way back when, compared to the less robustly crystallized style of crystallization found in recent mining projects at this same locale. The sharp crystals are to 3-4 mm and highly lustrous, with a translucent dark evergreen color when strongly lit. Ex. Philadelphia Academy of Sciences Collection.
MD-199890 - Atacamite - - Archived Copiapó Province, Atacama Region, Chile cabinet, 11.0 x 9.5 x 4.3 cm.
11.0 x 9.5 x 4.3 cm. A large, showy specimen from the type locality for this important collectible copper species, with many areas of beautiful, intense deep green crystals flat-lying on the matrix (on both sides). From the noted collection of T.B. Wilson who, according to the Mineralogical Record Archive on him, joined the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia in 1832, and was the Academy's principal benefactor. His collection was donated upon his death in 1865. Ex. Philadelphia Academy of Sciences Collection.
MD-202005 - Atacamite - - Archived Collahuasi Mine, Collahuasi district, Iquique Province, Tarapacá Region, Chile small cabinet, 6.4 x 5.2 x 3.8 cm.
6.4 x 5.2 x 3.8 cm. This is a complexly intergrown mass of crystallized atacamite, in huge crystals unlike any I have seen from Chile. It is 100% crystals. I have never myself seen another specimen from this remote copper mine located 170 km SE of Iquique. Discovered over 200 years ago and sent back to Europe for study, atacamite was named from this region. NOTE that this is thought to be the specific mine locality for the species (though usually the type locality is given simply as "in the Atacama Desert"...see IMA list of type specimen locations). Ex.
