3D58 - Gold on Arsenopyrite - $ 225 SOLD Triumph Mine, Whitlock Mining District, Mariposa County, California, USA thumbnail, 2.2 x .9 x .9 cm ex. Marilyn Dodge
Aesthetic specimen of a spire of Arsenopyrite sprinkled with lustrous coarse Gold crystals averaging 2-3 mm in size. The combination of the numerous Gold crystals, the silver matrix and the white Quartz for accent make this nicely attractive. Unusual!
Ars - TN 1081 - Arsenopyrite - $ 125 SOLD Yaogangxian Mine, Yizhang County, Chenzhou Prefecture, Hunan Province, China thumbnail, 2.7 x 2.0 x 1.7 cm
CORN01 - Arsenopyrite - $ 850 Porthleven, Cornwall, England miniature, 5.6 x 4.5 x 3.5 cm
This matrix specimen features extremely lustrous, columnar, metallic gray, crystals of arsenopyrite to 3.0 cm in length, along with arsenopyrite-coated, quartz crystals, to 1.75 cm in length. This area, east of Penzance, is far less known than many of its neighbors. I got this piece out of a generally good source, but it has no older verifying labels. Just to be on the safe side, I did show it to a Cornwall dealer at Denver for confirmation with the result that it seemed "likely" to be legitimate as advertised. It certainly is distinct from other old arsenos from Portugal or Mexico!
GHA11 - Quartz on Arsenopyrite - $ 295 SOLD Panasqueira, Portugal small cabinet, 6.5 x 4.5 x 2.8 cm
WOW! What a combo! This piece features a quartz tip perched perpendicularly on Arsenopyrite ! The quartz is broken and rehealed on the back faces, and pristine in front. it displays magnificently and is most unusual!
GHA16 - Arsenopyrite on Quartz - $ 200 SOLD Panasqueira, Portugal cabinet, 10.3 x 10 x 7 cm
A really interesting quartz crystal showing "terraces" as it terminates, with setback crystal faces that are unusual. From the right side shoots out a little spray of bright arseno crystals....very interesting combo piece!
GHA4 - Arsenopyrite with Siderite - $ 2000 SOLD Panasqueira, Portugal cabinet, 11.3 x 7 x 4.3 cm
A superb arborescent cluster of brililantly metallic, bright arsenopyrite, with some contrasting siderites about its upper portion. A very elegant and sculptural specimen, i think. (NOTE: Not a Hansen piece, but one I have had from another collection that fits in well here)
GHA6 - Quartz with Siderite on Arsenopyrite - $ 400 Panasqueira, Portugal cabinet, 15.5 x 12 x 5.7 cm
A 12 cm quartz crystal elgantly straddles a large plate of bright arsenopyrite! The quartz itself is dusted with small siderite crysatls
GHA9 - Apatite on Arsenopyrite - $ 450 SOLD Panasqueira, Portugal miniature, 4.9 x 4.3 x 3 cm
This choice miniature features a 2 x 2 x 1.5 cm apatite crystal of blue-gray color, perched upon an extremely lustrous cluster of arsenopyrite. It is an extremely aesthetic arrangement and isolated apatites on such matrix are very rare for the locality compared to apatite on other types of matrix.
HECK-005 - Arsenopyrite - $ 1800 Hidalgo del Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico small cabinet, 8.9 x 5.8 x 5.5 cm ex. Richard Heck
A simply dazzling cluster of brilliantly metallic crystals, that set the standard for the species in the past and are still ahrd to beat for lustre, even by new material from China (albeit, of different crystal habits). This solid mass is composed of many, splendent, silver-gray, slightly rounded, crystals of arsenopyrite, to 2.5 cm across. The arrangement of crystals is shows stepped growth, resulting in many faces to reflect light from. Bright! This is classic old material, seldom seen in such quality and just outstanding for the species even to my eyes, spoiled as they are with the recent glut of Chinese arsenopyrites
HECK-055 - Arsenopyrite - $ 200 SOLD Naica, Chihuahua, Mexico small cabinet, 7.2 x 5.2 x 3.4 cm ex. Richard Heck
This is a sparkling mass of intergrown, splendent, brilliantly metallic crystals of arsenopyrite, to 7 mm across. Small quartzes are mixed in , as well. Subtly different than modern Chinese material
HECK-125 - Arsenopyrite and Sphalerite - $ 2000 Hidalgo del Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico large cabinet, 16.2 x 8.1 x 4.7 cm ex. Richard Heck
This is an outstanding specimen of arsenopyrite and sphalerite on matrix with sharp, textbook crystals of each species. Well formed crystals of very lustrous arsenopyrite to 3.8 cm across sit mixed with splendent, black crystals of sphalerite to 3 cm. They almost totally cover a plate of matrix , and the piece is well trimmed and looks good from several angles. It look slike you took Chinese-quality arsenopyrite and glued them to Dalnegorsk-quality sphalerite. You normally do not see such superb examples of both species, together, and this is a top quality Mexican specimen for these reasons.
HECK-203 - Arsenopyrite on Sphalerite - $ 1200 Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico cabinet, 10.9 x 8.0 x 7.4 cm ex. Dr. Eugene Meieran
A very lustrous, yellowish-metallic crystal of arsenopyrite, measuring 4 cm across, is accompanied by smaller crystals of the same species along with a few large black crystals of sphalerite, to 6 cm across. A druse of grayish calcite crystals is present, mostly on the back side of the specimen. Overall an interesting combination piece that I am todl is a very odd association and style for the mine. The arsenopyrite alone, without the associations, would be easily thought to be from Panasquiera by most people. It is more robust than most Mexican arsenopyrites, and does not have the usual "sharp" chisel-like termination. Although not in the Heck collection of Mexican minerals, this piece fit well with the update and is included. It was long in the collection of noted collector and dealer Gary Hansen. He sold it at some point to collector Gene Meieran, who today is known for his big gem crystals but used to have a very large and diverse suite of sulfide species. When his sulfides collection sold to me in about 2005, the piece went next to Mexico & Arizona-collecting specialist David Stoudt, from whom I obtained it back by exchange recently.
HECK-210 - Arsenopyrite - $ 600 San Antonio Mine, East Camp, Santa Eulalia Dist., Serdan, Chihuahua, Mexico cabinet, 14.9 x 8.3 x 6.1 cm ex. David Stoudt
Emplaced on limestone matrix and totally covering the surface are sharp, intergrown splendent, silver gray crysyals of arsenopyrite, to 2 cm across. A few, colorless, lustrous and translucent quartz crystals, to 3 cm in length poke through the mass of arsenopyrite crystals. Beautiful large plate. Although not in the Heck collection of Mexican minerals as are most others in this update, this piece is from the Stoudt collection which I also recently acquired, and so fit well with the larger update
HECK-227 - Arsenopyrite - $ 1800 - ON HOLD Santa Eulalia Dist., Serdan, Chihuahua, Mexico miniature, 5.1 x 4.1 x 3.9 cm ex. Richard Heck
This is a way beyond normal quality, stunning example of intergrown, splendent, silvery-white crystals of arsenopyrite. They reach to 4.5 cm in length. As it so happened, most of the crystals are also doubly terminated and this is just one of the finest arsenopyrite miniatures I can imagine, competing even with the best of Chinese material which has come out in abundance in recent years. There is a subtle curvature to the crystals in this specimen, and a sharper point at the termination, that together makes it stand out from Chinese material
J11-09 - Cobaltian Smithsonite - $ 2500 SOLD Choix, Mun. de Choix, Sinaloa, Mexico cabinet, 12.3 x 9.5 x 8.5 cm ex. Richard Heck
This piece is particularly interesting because of its 3-dimensional saddle-like shape and smooth, even coloration. It is a hefty piece of good cabinet size, not too big and not too small. It is a beautiful color unlike smithsonite in this habit (rounded, or botryoidal) from other locales. Choix smithsonites really set a standard for "hot pink" color in the species. They came out in bits and spurts as recently as a few years ago in the mid-2000s but generally were blues and blue-green colors with some relatively paler pinks. These more intense pink specimens date back, generally to the 1960s-1970s. They are getting harder to come by on the market, found only when collections are recycled. from the Richard Heck collection. Joe Budd photos
