Demantoid garnet is among the most rare of the group, particularly in large display specimens. The few pieces recovered from Italy go for fantastic prices, and only a few have been available of a high level, in any case. They also tend not to be nearly so gemmy as those from amazing new finds of 2009-2010. This piece features glassy and gemmy, richly green, demantoid crystals to NEARLY AN INCH (2.3 cm across). The crystals run nicely across the middle of the matrix for a dramatic display. They are particularly gemmy, even for this find. Although most crystals are around 1 cm, plus some insignificant druses of smaller, that big crystal in the middle is nearly an INCH, making it one of the largest single crystals on matrix I have personally seen amidst seeing much of the top production from here. This piece came from Dr. Federico Pezzotta, a well known exploration and research mineralogist who does much work in madagascar. He helped advise miners and was early on the scene to bring this material to market, handling most of the best pieces (perhaps, all the best). This is a significant, large, museum piece. The white matrix was actually limestone which has been, amazingly, metamorphosed ( metasomatized) into garnet in ancient geological time. Incredible origins for a matrix garnet specimen, and yet another reason to value this new deposit so highly. It is not certain at the moment that much more can come out of here, for various reasons. This specimen is from the finds of 2009 in Madagascar, from a dangerous, mangrove-covered deposit that floods for most of the day during the collecting season there. While many came out, briefly, we feel this deposit will be short lived. This is a stunning small minaiture or large thumbnail (a "toenail"), one that was held back until recently, by one of the sources. This piece features large, glassy and gemmy, grass-green demantoid crystals, measuring 1.75 cm in length, stacked together on a thin shard of matrix. This is a superb example for the size range, and features garnets of a quality that, if from the old classic locale in Italy, would be priced with another "zero" in the price. Such rich specimens were uncommon even in this find, as many as there were in the first traunches. Further production here declined in 2010 and I expect to continue at only a modest pace compared to the easier pickings of the first year. A rather fine garnet, from an unusual locality! We have seen small, unimportant crystals, and a few big isolated crystals, but this piece is the best I have yet seen from the mine. It features sharp crystals with good lustre, to 1 inch. They are isolated and contrasted on the matrix. From a small pocket found in late 2010. Joe Budd photos

Over 2 years of mining here, there was been only one pocket to my knowledge, showing any pieces with a rich calcite association. Presented here are several pieces from that pocket (found sometime in early 2010), which had been held back til now. No more has been found since, of this quality or style. Brilliantly lustrous crystals of the rare variety of garnet, topazolite, are starkly contrasted on this calcite matrix. The crystals reach 1.6 cm in size and they are like little jewelsincredibly bright and flashy, almost metallic in their reflections. They are razor sharp, very 3-dimensional compared to the usual more flat style found in the majority of topazolite garnets worldwide. The color varies in reflected light, but is basically an olive-green with slight tinges of yellows and other green hues. The piece is large, dramatic, and very flashy in person. Again, the garnets look almost metallic when you see them at first. Further production here declined in 2010 and I expect to continue at only a modest pace compared to the easier pickings of the first year. This extremley rare large plate has has at least 100 crystals, many exceeding 1 cm. This is flashy and bright, with incredible coverage . Out of the whole find, perhaps under a dozen specimens had so many crystals on one plate, I have been told by my own sources who are close to the material; and have seen nearly all that came out. This plate has the deepest green color for the find, with no tinge of the brown hue that infinges on the quality of some demantoids from here (those that do not cross over to the "topazolite" variety of garnet, anyhow). The matrix is heavier than you might expect because it too, is garnet - altered in a rare event called metasomatism where the limestone host rock was replaced by garnet in microscale. This is a dramatic example for the size range, and features garnets of a quality that, if from the old classic locale in Italy, would absolutely be priced with another "zero" in the price. Such rich specimens were uncommon even in this find, as many as there were in the first traunches found. The locality is downright dangerous, and collecting is under appalling conditions. Needlesss to say, the recovery of fine larger pieces is all the more difficult here. Further production here declined in 2010 and I expect to continue at only a modest pace compared to the easier pickings of the first year. A gorgeous, deep red, garnet cluster with large crystals of very high, waxy luster that would be considered extremely good for this locality. Minor epidote is present. Despite some minoe peripheral wear at bottom, this is in super condition for the locale, which such freestanding specimens are extremely uncommon. This is from the Garnet subcollection of Bob Nowakowski. Joe Budd Photos.

Fantastic 1.8 cm on edge crystal of Hausmannite sitting perfectly, and I mean perfectly, on a bed of red crystalline garnets. The Hausmannite has excellent sub-metallic luster, and is growing in its classic pseudo-octahedral form. There are even advanced late-stage pseudo-octahedrons forming on some of the corners. This is a superb and aesthetic specimen.

I should say up front that Wendell considered this and I like to think thought it worthy; but the purchase was put off in part because of the large exchange we made for another specimen. This wasn't in his collection - but as he specializes in garnets, I had purchased this with him in mind when the pocket became available at Tucson this year. Then I lost track of it as it was in with these pieces....and so it remains available! This is one of the fantastic new garnets written up in the What's New from Tucson report recently, by Tom Moore. It is an exquisite pair of highly modified Demantoid Garnets that mirror each other and grow around a small core of tiny Demantoids. The larger crystals are blue-green, partially gemmy, and highly lustrous. THE COLOR AND BRILLIANCE DOES NOT COME THROUGH HERE! THIS IS A DRAMATICALLY SHOWY DEMANTOID, WITH MUCH BETTER COLOR IN PERSON...Quality Demantoids are very rarely seen in this size, color, or brightness. A great thumbnail from a rare locality as reported in the recent issue of the Mineralogical Record, as I said. I believed this to be, for my taste, the best of the lot. I should point out that the crystal size is remarkable for the locality, aside from the sheer beauty of it.
