Elbaite, Albite (Var: Cleavelandite) from Mt Mica Quarry, Paris, Oxford Co., Maine, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-271588b.jpg]

7.8 x 5.4 x 5.4 cm. A classic, polychromatic Tourmaline crystal set against a large "sphere" of Albite (var: "Cleavelandite"). The piece comes with an old Harvard label that indicates it's from Newry, but I showed this piece to a few knowledgeable individuals who told me it was most likely from Mt. Mica. The multi-terminated, stout crystal on this piece ranges in color from black to a blue-black color near the base and grades into a rare lilac hue with green terminations. The interesting and unusual color combination along with the overall good condition of the piece makes it a worthwhile and attractive display specimen from this famous New England locality.

5.5 x 2.7 x 2.5 cm. Gorgeous, sea-green beryl crystals of this amazing quality are very rare from the famous Teofilo Otoni area of Brazil. Specimens like this came out in the 1960s or early 1970s, with none since. Most went to Europe, Germany in particular, and were cut for the gem trade as this was before aquamarine could be had from Pakistan in more quantity. This superb gem is beautifully accented by cleavelandite rosettes on one side. The upper two-thirds of the crystal is cutter quality. The striking, etched/frosted side faces are fabulously complimented by the complex, pyramidal termination. Very nearly pristine. Overall it is a classic, highly desirable and very seldom available material from this noted locale.

8.4 x 7.0 x 4.3 cm. The recent finds of amazonite in Ethiopia have rivaled those from Colorado. This fine combination specimen has sharp, lustrous, powder-blue, amazonite crystals pleasingly accented with snow-white albite.

Microcline, Quartz (Var: Smoky Quartz), Albite from Papachacra, Belen Department, Catamarca, Argentina [db_pics/mdpics/MD-271664a.jpg]

7.2 x 5.0 x 3.9 cm. A fine mounded combination specimen from recent finds at a pegmatite in the foothills of the Andes of Argentina. Glassy, transparent smoky quartz crystals to 1.6 cm are nicely scattered amongst sharp, pastel-pink microcline crystals, some of which are Carlsbad twins. Tiny, colorless albite crystals are epitaxial on the microcline crystals. Limonite coats part of the backside of the mound. Highly representative combination material from this locale.

Despite the fact that this specimen has a clean repair to the crystal,it is still a super anatase on matrix, and there just are not many around with the balanced beauty of this one. The anatase crystal is large (1.5 cm), super-lustrous, textbook in form - in other words, perfect. And, it sits just right on the matrix.

7.9 x 5.1 x 4.7 cm. When it comes to Aquamarine, Pakistan is the most productive country for specimens in the modern age of mineral collecting. Some of the very finest quality Aquamarine specimens come from the various pegmatites in the Pakistani Himalayas, especially in the Shigar Valley. Matrix specimens of Aquamarine are still fairly uncommon in the world, and to find an association piece such as this is a real treat. The piece hosts a solitary, euhedral, pale blue color, prismatic crystal of Aquamarine measuring 1.7 cm long which is protruding from a matrix comprising sharp, well-formed, distinct, snow-white crystals of Albite.

12.7 x 11.0 x 6.1 cm. This looks like a snowball with aquamarines poking out. The cleavelandite matrix is stark white and sparkling, totally pure and with a clean whiteness that is most unusual, even from this classic locale. The totally gemmy aquamarines poke out every which way, showcasing their gem transparency against the clean white background. It makes for one of the more sparkling combination pieces I have seen from here. Sharp, silvery-metallic muscovite crystals add some geometric contrast to the piece, as well. Lastly, it is nearly a floater: a complete crystallized mass of muscovite, aquamarine, cleavelandite, all perched on a bit of minor schorl tourmaline sticking down and out the bottom.

Exceptional crystals of gormanite in isolated groups to 1 cm, from a rare one-time find perhaps 20 years ago in Linopolis. These are seldom seen on the market today and so most folks think the best comes from Canada - but to my eye, these crystals from Brazil will always be better. 6.8 x 3.2 x 2.1 cm

5.3 x 4.2 x 3.6 cm. A group of rich pink, translucent, lustrous, hexagonal Beryl (var: "Morganite") crystals sit atop a matrix of off-white blocky Albite (var "Cleavelandite") crystals with Quartz and minor Muscovite and Schorl. The largest Morganite crystal measures 2.6 cm across, but please note that the back of the crystal group is contacted. A very attractive and well crystallized display specimen of this classic pegmatite material.

1.9 x 1.3 x 1.0 cm. A very aesthetic thumbnail specimen featuring a sharp, lustrous, deep red color trapezohedron of Spessartine with dodecahedral modifications. A twinned white crystal of Albite (var: "Pericline") is jutting out of the top of the Spessartine to create one of the most aesthetic and eye-catching thumbnails from Shengus that I have seen. The piece is nearly a floater were it not for a small contact from a previous Albite crystal on the other side of the piece. Ex. Richard Kosnar Collection.

4.7 x 2.3 x 1.7 cm. Despite the fact that the Tourmaline group comprises more than a dozen species, and Tourmalines occur in virtually every color of the rainbow, yellow is one of the most rare and highly sought after colors for specimens. This specimen is one of the most interesting, unique and uncharacteristic Tourmalines that I have seen from virtually any world locality. This specimen was in the collection of Richard Kosnar, who purchased it from New Jersey mineral dealer Rick Smith in the early 1980s. It features a pair of very sharp, highly lustrous, thin, prismatic, GEM/gemmy, multicolored crystals of Tourmaline on a single very slightly smoky color Quartz crystal with minor Albite. Matrix specimens from Stak Nala aren't terribly common, but it's the coloration of the crystals that makes this piece so unusual. The smaller of the Tourmaline crystals has a rich olive-green to black color at the base with a bright pink termination, but the larger crystal has a very unique yellow zone spanning over 2 cm of this 4.7 cm crystal with the same olive-green and pink zones as the smaller one. Another impressive aspect of this piece is the fact that the terminations are highly lustrous, and not at all dull like so many Tourmalines from Stak Nala.

Elbaite, Albite from Gilgit, Gilgit District, Northern Areas, Pakistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-280354a.jpg]

9.3 x 8.7 x 5.3 cm. A fine, lustrous, striated, prismatic bi-colored crystal of pink and green Tourmaline with a rarely seen unusual "white cap" on bladed Albite matrix. This is definitely one of the more unique Tourmalines that I have seen from any locality, and the "white cap" could be caused by included pocket clay when the crystal formed. The crystal itself measures 4.3 cm long, and passes light when backlit. The quality is good, and the crystal is almost suspended on the matrix in a way that it appears to be floating. Tourmalines are so diverse, and yet, this is the first "white cap" Tourmaline crystal that I can remember seeing from any locality. Ex. Brian Kosnar Collection.
