Spessartine Garnet and Schorl in Albite from Little Three Mine, Ramona, San Diego County, California, USA [db_pics/pics/ck34d.jpg]

A CLASSIC San Diego garnet, most likely dating to the Louis Spalding Sr. era of mining when the best all came out of this small mine in remote San Diego County. This is a SUPER specimen as it features a crystal which is not only large (2.5 cm) but sharply formed whereas most of them are etched and partially dissolved. Large, intact spessartines of this size are VERY scarce on the market and even in the major collections in San Diego where they are considered one of the top collectibles from the area.

An unusual specimen that is, surprisingly, a specimen-worthy CLEAVELANDITE on its own merits....whereas the species is usually relegated to host rock or accent mineral and seldom the dominant feature of a nice piece. These lustrous, beige crystals form a wreath over the top of a thin albite crystal. Acquired from the collection of Tim Sherburn, who got it from Louis Spaulding Jr. (current owner of the mine made famous by his father) in 1993.

Previously from the Don Olson collection, this is a REALLY impressive rock even for those of us who are not exactly partial to feldspars...the aesthetics of the white cleavelandite and purple lepidolite crystals really make the piece special and accentuate the sharp twinning of the feldspar itself! Not a tourmaline, but nevertheless one of my favorites in the lot!

A CLASSIC San Diego combo specimen, most likely dating to the Louis Spalding Sr. era of mining when the best all came out of this small mine in remote San Diego County. This is a really showy combination specimen for the price, as it features a 1.2 cm partially etched crystal which is not only very colorful but also still retains some of the original crystal faces (though not all). Nearly all garnets of any size recovered from this mine show etching to some degree , asthe solutions started to resorb them sometime after formation. Here, at least, the crystal has color and visual appeal especially as it sits nicely in contrasting white albite between two schorl rabbit-ears. Large, intact spessartines of this size are VERY scarce on the market and even in the major collections in San Diego where they are considered one of the top collectibles from the area. This one came through noted California dealer Al Ordway, who always has great San Diego stuff from the old days!

A VERY RARE morganite from this small mine better known for aquamarines and the occasional tourmaline! The crystal measures 5 cm across and has a very pleasing pink color to it. However, on closer inspection this specimen shows both blue and pink zoning, and the effect is more pronounced in person where you can clearly see blue when looking down the c-axis. This is exactly similar to the famous piece of same provenance known as "The Pala Princess" which has been pictured in Sinkankas' books and noted as a very unique specimen. It has excellent lustre and is mostly translucent, if not transparent per se. For the mine, this is exceptional. It was collected by mine owner Roland Reed in 1982.

This important specimen is a rare matrix morganite with crystals to 4 cm, and gemmy at that. They have a brilliant internal brightness to them and a rich peachy color that is really quite unique to the old White Queen material, not matched for 3 decades. This piece would have originated with mine owner Norm Dawson and it has been through several collections in recent decades, most notably Dr. Edward David's first collection (dispersed in 1993) - his numbered label remains on the backside. At some point in the mid-90s it was repaired (cleanly) by dealer Cal Graeber. The repair is invisible unless you know to look for it and runs betweenm the two major crystals so that the crystals themselves are not repaired as such. Matrix morganties from California are rare, but pieces of this calibre are really limited to just a few dozen pieces and most of those are untouchable because they are in museums or priced over 20 thousand dollars these days. This is like owning a piece of history, and is a good investment as they only go up in value.

This beautiful matrix specimen features a 1.5 cm , VERY GEMMY crystal perched in matrix of albite. It is MUCH better in person, brighter an dmore lustrous and sparkly! The garnet crystal is the seed of a daisychain of little garnet flecks that crawls through the pocket and to the back of the piece, perhaps grown from the partial etching of the original large crystal. RARE material, nowadays!

A classic of the late 1980s, now rare on the market! This combination of pink pinacoid and green basal terminations, both gemmy, on a dark core, is totally distinct. Almost all were found as floaters with these thin blades of Albite, making for a very aesthetic combination. Hard to find good ones on the market, today.

Bubblegum-pinks are rare , for whatever reason, despite the produndity of other colors coming out of Afghanistan. A good bubblegum-pink tourmaline is just hard to get ahold of...and o matrix, almost impossible! This attractive combination piece features a 9 x 3.75 x 3 cm crystal perched dramatically next to a slightly smoky quartz, with both showing freestanding terminations unencumbered of the other. The smoky has a slight chip out of the back (not visible or detracting at all from the front), but is otherwise complete all around 360 degrees! The tourmaline is pristine, has no damage at all, and is ALSO complete 360 degrees except at its junction to the quartz in the lower half on onee side. The termination is perfect. There is one very clean repair only, on the whole specimen, to the tourmaline about 1.3 up from its bottom. You have to really look for it, to find it, the job is done so well. What really makes the piece, though, is the accenting white albite and purple lepidolite at the base of the smoky and tourmaline, nestling the two crystals and providing a contrasting base for them to jump out from. It is an exceptional combination piece that I first sold in the late 1990s and have been trying to trade back ever since to do more work on it (which was done, to trim it to this level). I have not see the like since, in this price range.

OK, this one boggled minds at Denver! It fooled me, and it fooled numerous people...nobod guessed BLUE ALBITE CRYSTALS ! The identity was finally settled by analysis at U of AZ. It seems to be a one-opff. I have seen no others of this material while waiting for this one to be cleaned and returned to me, and I think its a very important rarity in that it is an extremely impressive (unprecedented?) example of an extremely common and usually boring species. The major crystals reach 5 x 4 cm in size and the slender, most finely formed crystal in the middle is about 3.5 cm tall, very 3-dimensional. Besides, its pretty! I admit I would normally be the last person in the world to say an albite is a world class crystallized mineral specimen, but then that is the fun of the hobby...you never know what will come out!

MUCH MORE GEMMY IN PERSON! These are rare things indeed, as I know from living nearby for almost a decade. Few collectors, even in San Diego County, own a crystal so large and sharp as this one. It is also exceedingly gemmy, MUCHBRIGHTER and more lustrous in person than the pic appears. The garnet measures 2 cm across at widest, and is COMPLETE and wellformed all around. MOST large garnets of this size are cracked, hackly, and just plain ugly because the pegmatite was so disrupted by movement and by acidic solutions that liked to eat garnets away and leave semicrystallized messes behind. This is a small miniature, but a fine one, of a quality that I can say you simply do not see for sale. By worldwide standards, many people consider these to be the finest spessartine gem crystals on matrix one can obtain, with the exception of a very few oldtimers from one small find in Marienfluss, Namibia. Certianly for the US collector, this is a critical addition to the collection. And a colorful one!

A gorgeous peachy-pink morganite crystal with INTENSE color (unusually deep hued!), perched on a natural pedestal of albite. The crystal is 7 cm and complete, not repaired, and is fairly translucent. This is a piece that looks impressive, yet does not break the bank to own. Few morganites are coming out anymore, from Afghanistan, and fewer still cthat are any kind of quality can be had in this price range. Luckily, we got it as a trimmer/fixer and were able to expose the crystal ourselves, from the confining matrix, to create a more aesthetic piece.

Afghanistan ain't producing like it used to, the reasons being fairly obvious, I think. It is harder to get material out, but also it is harder to access deeper deposits given the lack of infrastructure and risk of setting up longterm mining here. Pristine, large tourmalines have always been rare, though. This is a really nice piece, complete all around with absolutely no damage, and with minor matrix attached as an accent. You can ask for little more in a tourmaline of this style! This style is extremely colorful, though they simply are not gemmy - but i'll say that in this size range this piece is more translucent (at edges) than most. The termination is spectacular and unusual, even for this locality, as it is glassy and features a unique and rare purplish coloration atop. This specimen was purchased in the early 1990s from dealer Herb Obodda , who was bringing out the best at the time. He sold it to his nearby neighbor and friend, longtime collector Ed David (a prominent scientist who was , among other things, President Nixon's White House Science advisor and helped usher along the Apollo moon landing program). Ed built a diverse large collection specializing in display-quality specimens of all sizes, particularly rich with examples of the gem pegmatites of Pakistan and Afghanistan because of his proximity to Obodda in the days they started to come out. I purchased this piece with Ed's 1000-piece collection in 2005, and set the specimen back in storage for the future. It has never been shown (or even, fully cleaned) til now.
