Acanthite from Imiter Mine, Atlas Mtns., Morocco [db_pics/pics/ma72sb.jpg]

This specimen has the largest crystals in the lot, and they are very 3-dimensional. The aesthetic sculptural quality of this specimen is unique and it looks like a floating semi-abstract sculpture. It features a huge, 2.5 cm, equant, octahedron on the top left and two large octahedrons on the top right. In fact, the specimen resembles a human with outstretched arms in supplication. Wow!

Acanthite with Barite from Imiter Mine, Atlas Mtns., Morocco [db_pics/pics/ma74c.jpg]

This is the richest specimen of acanthite in the lot, with huge crystals overarching from the matrix like the crown of a tree. It is comprised of more than ten octahedral crystals, all of them pointing upward and out, with much more 3-dimensionality in person. At least two of these crystals reach the astounding size of 3 cm in length! They also possess halfway decent luster, especially for this find. Minor associated white barite crystals really complete the piece by providing accent. This one is much better in person.

Silver, Acanthite from Silver Islet mine, Silver Islet, Sibley Township, Thunder Bay District, Ontario, Canada [db_pics/mdpics/MD-113673a.jpg]

4.0 x 3.5 x 1.9 cm. A CLASSIC, OLD-TIME specimen of thick, beautifully burnished silver wires nicely accented with acanthite crystals from the famous Silver Islet Mine of Lake Superior, Canada. Silver of this quality, from this locality is seldom available and is always in demand. The mine was on a very small, low-lying island, just offshore, in Lake Superior and was active from 1869-1883. Periodic storms flooded the mine and swept much of the mine works away. Very sporadic exploration has taken place since then.

2.3 x 1.5 x 1.0 cm. A CLASSIC and aesthetic, stacked thumbnail cluster of lustrous, gray acanthite cubes from the famous Rayas Mine at Guanajuato, Mexico. The largest cubes perched at the top and the hoppered crystals are a very nice effect. Specimens like this are why the Rayas Mine is often considered as producing some of the worlds finest acanthites. The combination of sharp crystal form and excellent lustre are the reasons. Ex. Dick Jones Collection.

Silver, Acanthite from Imiter Mine, Boumalne-Dadès, Ouarzazate Province, Souss-Massa-Draâ Region, Morocco [db_pics/mdpics/MD-120201a.jpg]

5.7 x 5.3 x 2.9 cm. A super-rich specimen of wire silver on acanthite, from the recent finds in Morocco (this piece was mined in early 2006). Acanthite is of course silver sulfide, so what you have here is a LOT of silver. But most important are these thick mats of glittering silver wires, richly piled up on the underlying acanthite (which provided the silver that supplied the growth of the wires). This find caused quite a stir, as any new find of crystallized precious metal does.
