rar09-wp01 - Nagyagite on Sphalerite with Rhodochrosite and Quartz - $ 1250 SOLD Sacaramb (Nagyag), Siebenburgen, Hunedoara Co., Romania (TYPE LOCALITY) cabinet, 12.5 x 6.8 x 3 cm
ex. Dr. Werner Paar Collection Nagyagite is one of those romantic old European rarities because it is mineralogically and historically interesting, both. This is a very large, rich plate with FREESTANDING (unetched from calcite!) crystals to 4mm of this very rare species, from its type locality, richly scattered over a matrix composed of sphalerite with decorative pale pink rhodochrosite accent. It is important that this has not been etched out from calcite as with so many nagyagite specimens, as that preparation method changes the natural patina on the surface of the crystals. These are rather robust, stubby crystals, nicely interspersed with rhodochrosite aggregates on ore matrix. (TYPE LOCALITY)
rar09-wp03 - Scheelite - $ 150 SOLD Baia Sprie, Maramures, Romania thumbnail, 1.6 x 1.2 x 1.1 cm
ex. Dr. Werner Paar Collection Scheelite is a rare associate in the Romanian polymetallic deposits. The Paar collection has several nice examples of this material, of which this is a VERY choice thumbnail! It is perfect all around (no damage) and shows an intense deep blue color when backlit. Many are just gray, this blue color being therefore highly desirable.
rar09-wp04 - Scheelite - $ 500 SOLD Baia Sprie, Maramures, Romania miniature, 3.0 x 2.3 x 1.7 cm
ex. Dr. Werner Paar Collection Scheelite is a rare associate in the Romanian polymetallic deposits. The Paar collection has several nice examples of this material, of which this is a VERY choice small miniature specimen! The major crystal is 1.5 cm and shows an intense deep blue color when backlit. It is complete on the front, just slightly contacted on the backside. Many are just gray, this blue color being therefore highly desirable.
rar09-wp05 - Bournonite - $ 1250 SOLD Baia Sprie, Maramures, Romania small cabinet, 7.1 x 6.5 x 4.4 cm
ex. Dr. Werner Paar Collection A rare locality specimen that is both attractive and richly crystallized, this piece features cog-wheel twins up to 8 mm, on a matrix of sphalerite, pyrite and jamesonite. Nice crystallized example of a species not very common in these deposits and treasured from other localities - so it is hard to find a good Romanian example for a worldwide suite of this species.
rar09-wp06 - Nagyagite - $ 2000 SOLD Sacaramb (Nagyag), Siebenburgen, Hunedoara Co., Romania (TYPE LOCALITY) miniature, 4.1 x 3.7 x 2.3 cm
ex. Dr. Werner Paar Collection Nagyagite is one of those romantic old European rarities because it is mineralogically and historically interesting, both. This is the richest, most robust cluster of crystals of this species that I have seen for sale, very different from the usual styles: either short robust crystals spaced out on matrix as above; or elegantly gracile and fragile, etched , thin crystals in clusters. Instead, here we have a solid 3x3x2 cm mass completely composed of intergrown, robust crystals up to 4 mm in size. It is important to note that these are FREESTANDING (unetched from enclosing calcite!) crystals, from its type locality; and that this has not been etched out from calcite as with so many nagyagite specimens, as that preparation method changes the natural patina on the surface of the crystals. The cluster is perched on a matrix composed of pale pink rhodochrosite. (TYPE LOCALITY)
rar09-wp07 - Scheelite - $ 750 SOLD Baia Sprie, Maramures, Romania small cabinet, 8.9 x 6.2 x 2.6 cm
ex. Dr. Werner Paar Collection Scheelite is a rare associate in the Romanian polymetallic deposits. The Paar collection has several nice examples of this material, of which this is a VERY choice larger specimen (not so common), and with crystallized calcite matrix. The crystals reach 1.1 cm in size (1.1 and 0.9 cm) and are pristine on the front display faces as shown (although each is contacted on the edge facing to left or right). They show an intense deep blue color when backlit.
rar09-wp08 - Sylvanite on Quartz - $ 1800 SOLD Baia de Aries, Alba, Romania (Type Locality) small cabinet, 7.5 x 5.2 x 3.7 cm
ex. Dr. Werner Paar Collection Sylvanite, the rare silver and gold telluride, was discovered here at this TYPE LOCALITY in 1835. It is known at its best for this surreal, metallic-organic growth that seems to have pattern, when crystallized at we see here. More technically speaking, these are flat-lying xls in the form of typical graphic intergrowths ("Schrifterz"). The effect is bizarre, and beautiful. Good handsized specimens from this type locality, most surely dating to the mid 1800s or before, are extremely hard to obtain today on the market.According to MINDAT: Named after the Transylvania region of Romania, where it was first found, and Sylvanium, one of the names proposed for the newly discovered element tellurium, which it contains.
RAR09-WP09 - Hessite on Quartz - $ 7500 SOLD Botes, Alba County, Romania small cabinet, 8 x 4 x 3 cm
ex. Dr. Werner Paar Collection Hessite is a very rare silver telluride that occurs at its best, in monster crystals as you see here, ONLY from this old classic locality. Specimens are extremely hard to obtain today and the few I have ever gotten tend to sell quickly. In europe, I have seen far inferior specimens to this priced at over double the price, and in euros no less. So I think that here, my friend is parting with a true treasure (even though it was a duplication, I argued for him to keep it...). The area with good xls (one elongated xl is really important and dramatic!) measures approximately 3x2 cm which is a rather large and impressive coverage. There is even some very microscopic gold in attendance. The piece retains its original patina, uncleaned by any acids or chemicals to brighten the hessite (although this is easily done with silver cleaners) or to change the quartz from iron-stained orange to a contrasting white color (also easily done with simple iron-out cleaners). I love the historic look of the piece. It is clean...by no means "dirty"...but it retains the look of an ancient specimen and is not "modernized" as too many are into a shiny silver crystal group on sparkling white quartz.
rar09-wp10 - Chalcostibite with Calcite - $ 1450 SOLD Boldut Mine, Cavnic, Romania cabinet, 9.9 x 5.2 x 3.1 cm
ex. Dr. Werner Paar Collection Chalcostibite on tetrahedite, associated with (?) zinkenite, quartz and sharp disc-shaped calcite, featuring beautifully lustrous crystals of xls of Chalcostibite up to 5 mm; and arranged in clusters upon tetrahedite. The Romanian suite is of particular pride in this collection and he had several notable chalcostibite specimens, all from a famous and small find of about 1990. Never has the same quality come out before or since, here.
rar09-wp12 - Chalcostibite on Tetrahedite - $ 1450 SOLD Boldut Mine, Cavnic, Romania cabinet, 13.0 x 7.5 x 3.0 cm
ex. Dr. Werner Paar Collection Spectacular aggregates of platy Chalcostibite xls are here arranged in clusters with minor tetrahedite, on a greyish-white matrix of quartz. The Romanian suite is of particular pride in this collection and he had several notable chalcostibite specimens, all from a famous and small find of the early 1990s. Never has the same quality come out before or since, here.
rar09-wp15 - SUREDAITE - $ 1250 SOLD Pirquitas (sector Oploca, level 7 1/4), Jujuy, Argentina (TYPE LOCALITY) miniature, 4.4 x 4.5 x 2.7 cm
ex. Dr. Werner Paar Collection A very rich specimen, smaller in size than others here but with a huge cavity, protecting beautiful sharp crystals to 3mm. This cavity is 2 cm wide, 2 cm long, and up to 5 mm across. Very rich! This Pb-Sn-S mineral, similar in overall appearance with teallite, is a unique mineral. Pirquitas is the only worldwide occurrence. This is astonishing because a tin-rich mineralogy including franckeite, cylindrite, teallite etc. but without suredaite is wide-spread throughout the famous Ag-Sn belt extending from Bolivia into NW-Argentina. Though massive suredaite is fairly common in one sector at Pirquitas, xls were never common. The xls are large for the species and not many specimens have been collected at the only location which now is abandoned.
rar09-wp16 - SUREDAITE - $ 1500 SOLD Pirquitas (sector Oploca, level 7 1/4), Jujuy, Argentina (TYPE LOCALITY) small cabinet, 7.6 x 6.6 x 5.3 cm
ex. Dr. Werner Paar Collection A beautiful, protected 1.5-cm cavity in this matrix hosts very sharp, lustrous crystals. It is a rich specimen, that has some display quality as well. The crystals seem to reach about 3-4 mm.This Pb-Sn-S mineral, similar in overall appearance with teallite, is a unique mineral. Pirquitas is the only worldwide occurrence. rar09-wp02 - Toyohaite - $ 1750 SOLD Pirquitas (sector Oploca, level 7 1/4), Jujuy, Argentina small cabinet, 6.2 x 4.4 x 3.9 cm
ex. Dr. Werner Paar Collection TOYOHAITE, in xls (!!) is super-rare. This specimen features 4 sub-mm but eye-visible crystals clearly contrasted upon the sparkling sulfide matrix. It has a display quality, that is nice. All crystals are nicely protected in a shallow cavity, as well. This is the Ag-rich end member of the rhodostannite-toyohaite solid solution series. A very rare mineral originally described from the Toyoha mine in Japan where it occurred in microscopic grains only. For the first time, the new occurrence in Argentina provides large xls of this species (+/- 1 mm) grown on franckeite-potosiite, and associated with other rare minerals like pirquitasite, cylindrite and fizelyite-ramdohrite. The mineral has a "pseudo-cubic" shape and looks like pyrrhotite. Only very few specimens with xls were recovered, and chances to find additional material are almost none. A "must" for any collector of rare Ag minerals. The mineral was microprobed and almost exaxctly correponds to the end member composition
rar09-wp13 - Toyohaite - $ 900 SOLD Pirquitas (sector Oploca, level 7 1/4), Jujuy, Argentina small cabinet, 7.6 x 6.3 x 5.9 cm
ex. Dr. Werner Paar Collection TOYOHAITE, in xls (!!) is super-rare. This specimen features multiple sub-mm crystals clearly contrasted upon the sparkling sulfide matrix. THey are not readily eye-visible in these photos, but there are many seen with a loupe and in person looking into the cavity (hence the price). It has a display quality, that is nice. All crystals are nicely protected in a shallow cavity, as well. This is the Ag-rich end member of the rhodostannite-toyohaite solid solution series.
