Pyrolusite from New Mexico
NEW SPECIMENS ADDED!
My posted specimens represent about half
the pocket from a surprising new find at a rediscovered old locality,
somewhere in Dona Ana County , New Mexico (details to follow later
this year). Now, pyrolusite is not on most people's hit list for
beautiful crystallized mineral species. However, as reported in the
current issue of Mineralogical Record's show report, these
really leap out at you, in person. These specimens are composed of
shimmering, almost silky, bundles of crystals with a high
lustre....black minerals that reflect light rather than suck it
in. All of these specimens were chosen for their top "silky" lustre,
condition, and beauty. They are all good, mostly of the same overall
quality, just differing in sizes and shape.

A superb small cabinet piece with great horizons to the edges! Intergrown, chatoyant, black, laths of pyrolusite to 1.5 cm across, totally cover massive pyrolusite.
A rare specimen that is not just the typical crust (thick though it is) with crystals atop. Here, the crust and crystals completely cover and surround a knoll of matrix underneath, and thus have a 3-dimensionality lacking in the other specimens here. This makes it very showy, as it stands up on its own the more.
CABINET-sized plate, elegant and beautiful!
A matrix cluster of chatoyant, black, pyrolusite crystals, to .6 cm across.
This matrix specimen of chatoyant, black, pyrolusite, in crystals to 1.25 cm across, has formed a basketweave pattern of crystal leapping off the matrix - rare, on the matrix, please note!
This matrix specimen of chatoyant, black, pyrolusite crystals, to.75 cm across, have formed a basketweave pattern on solid rock matrix. VERY bright and sparkly specimen.
Pretty, elongated specimen
Intergrown, chatoyant, black crystals, to 1.0 cm across, formed a basketweave pattern.
Chatoyant, black, intergrown crystals of pyrolusite, to 1.25 cm across, have formed in a basketweave pattern.
This very fine matrix specimen features two areas of chatoyant, black, pyrolusite in a basketweave pattern. The smaller crystals reach .3 cm across and the larger crystals reach 1.2 across.
A portion of this specimen of chatoyant, black, pyrolusite, is in a basketweave pattern and a portion is a cityscape of crystals, to 1.25 cm in length. SUPER aesthetics alla round, make this one of my favorite miniatures!
On a matrix of massive pyrolusite, is a beautiful weave of interlocked, chatoyant, black crystals, to 1.0 cm across. One of the best sparkly pieces here, though hard to convey in photos. Super display, with the freestanding crystals at the edge as you see.
One of the nicer pieces overall with seemingly slightly more robust crystallization and good edges.
A large, bright plate!
CABINET-sized plate, one of the 2 longest and biggest in the lot, with super quality throughout
