OLDEURO-51 - Freieslebenite - AUS$ 829 SOLD Himmelsfürst Mine, Brand-Erbisdorf, Freiberg District, Erzgebirge, Saxony, Germany small cabinet, 6.5 x 3.1 x 2.2 cm
SHARP crystals of extremely high lustre to 2.5 mm grace the sulfide-rich surface of this specimen. Rare old material from the TYPE LOCALITY !
OLDEURO-52 - Witherite - AUS$ 1382 SOLD Brownley Hill Mine, Nenthead, Alston Moor District, Cumberland, England small cabinet, 6.5 x 4.8 x 4.2 cm
A super aesthetic piece clearly from the very oldest finds here (note date of 1838(, of sharp, translucent, lustrous witherites perched on a galena matrix. I have not previously seen witherites from here on galena either through ignorance or because they aren't common as I suspect. In any case, the contrast of the metallic galena background sets this off nicely. TYPE LOCALITY !
OLDEURO-53 - Mimetite var. Campylite - AUS$ 1604 Caldbeck Fells, Cumberland, England small cabinet, 7.9 x 6.8 x 3.5 cm
My god, the COLOR on these mimetite crystals is crazy good...just a fiery red, the best I have seen of this material for color. They are smallish at 6-7mm, but the "Three Amigos" make quite an impact visually as they sit on this contrasting matrix, Superb specimen for quality, and a neat label as well.
OLDEURO-54 - Vauquelinite with Embreyite - AUS$ 829 SOLD Berezovsk Mines, Ekaterinburg (Sverdlovsk), Middle Urals, Russia small cabinet, 7.7 x 4.9 x 4.0 cm
A very rich specimen from this famous lead deposit, with rich postachio-green Vauquelinite microxls all over the piece, and minute druses of embreyite microxls as well (they are orange, and seem intermixed quite liberally on the righthand side) . The even rarer cassedanneite is red and although I have not analysed the red micros here, it is possible they are that species. Type Locality for both species!
OLDEURO-55 - Heteromorphite - AUS$ 276 SOLD St. Andreasberg, Harz Mountains, Lower Saxony, Germany small cabinet, 6.5 x 4.2 x 3.0 cm
Apparently this was once studied carefully by somebody who knows a lot more than I do, and whom corrected its ID to this very rare mineral. Mindat confirms this is a valid species and notes: "This mineral is an intermediate member of a homologous series. The thickness of a galena sheet in the structure determines the series member. A very rare mineral." I cannot find a photo of material from Andreasberg but this specimen has crystals which , though tiny brilliant specks, look like the material I have seen from Pribram.
OLDEURO-56 - Siderite with Galena on Quartz - AUS$ 829 SOLD Neudorf, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany small cabinet, 6.2 x 4.1 x 3.6 cm
A beautiful association specimen from this classic locale, with sharp , translucent golden-amber siderites to about 1 cm in size.
OLDEURO-57 - Manganite - AUS$ 498 Ilfeld, Thuringia, Germany miniature, 5.1 x 2.9 x 1.8 cm
A sharp miniature featuring a brilliant, lustrous, 1.2-cm crystal in a mass of little acicular mangantie crystals. Unusual!
OLDEURO-58 - Leadhillite - AUS$ 442 SOLD Malacalzetta Mine, Iglesias, Carbonia-Iglesias Province, Sardinia, Italy miniature, 5.8 x 5.0 x 3.7 cm
A significant rarity, platy yellow leadhillite crystals on a matrix of sparkling white calcite, from this classic old Italian locale.
OLDEURO-59 - Jamesonite with Pyrargyrite on Tetrahedrite - AUS$ 221 SOLD Bolivia small cabinet, 7.2 x 5.4 x 3.7 cm
A most unusual specimen with sharp jamesonite crystals, elongated lustrous pyrargyrite, all on a matrix of weirdly crystallized tetrahedrite. This has a label handwritten by Federico Ahlfeld, a very famous mineralogist and
OLDEURO-60 - Helvite - AUS$ 498 Breitenbrunn, Erzgebirge, Saxony, Germany small cabinet, 5.6 x 4.1 x 3.5 cm
Sharp, textbook-like yellow crystals to 3 mm or so are protected inside a natural crevasse in this matrix specimen from an old locale that is actually (I was surprised to find out!) the co-TYPE LOCALITY for the species.
OLDEURO-61 - Galena with Calcite and Siderite - AUS$ 332 SOLD Neudorf, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany small cabinet, 8.0 x 6.5 x 3.3 cm
A rich, lustrous specimen of sharp galena crystals accented by siderite and sparkling calcite, from this classic locality.
OLDEURO-62 - Fluorite with Quartz - AUS$ 1659 Gersdorf Mine, Freiberg, Saxony, Germany small cabinet, 8.0 x 6.1 x 3.0 cm
A stunningly beautiful, sparkling cluster of bright yellow fluorite draped by bright white quartz crystals, for a pretty combo. This is a classic and very old locality for fluorite of course, but few such combination specimens of such beauty are around to own - I have not seen any for sale quite like this one.
OLDEURO-64 - Pyrargyrite - AUS$ 829 St. Andreasberg, Harz Mountains, Lower Saxony, Germany miniature, 4.0 x 2.6 x 2.3 cm
SHARP, super lustrous, machine-carved-looking pyrargyrites to 7.5 mm make this little matrix specimen a jewel of a rock. The crystals are not big, but they have presence, and they light up when backlit. Superb old classic from this important mining district.
OLDEURO-66 - Calcite - AUS$ 221 St. Andreasberg, Harz Mountains, Lower Saxony, Germany cabinet, 15.2 x 10.6 x 3.7 cm
A sharp complex crystal of about 1 inch, perched on matrix of small calcites, makes this a classic example from this old locality.
OLDEURO-67 - Malachite - AUS$ 1991 Burra Burra Mine, Burra, Mt Lofty Ranges, South Australia, Australia cabinet, 11.7 x 9.5 x 4.2 cm
A really impressive, LARGE and hefty specimen of carving-grade malachite in thick layers, capped by a crystallized vug, from this old locality. The piece masses a kilo, over 2 pounds in weight! It is very beautiful and is an important example, I would think, for the locality.
