Chrysocolla ps. Gypsum, with Malachite
Star of the Congo Mine, Katanga, Democratic Republic of Congo
Small Cabinet, 9.1 x 2.8 x 2.0 cm

A unique specimen in my experience, this is a complete replacement by chrysocolla of a large selenite crystal (standing up on a base of matrix), from this well-known copper mining area. I have seen very small examples of this replacement from here, and of course form other localities in Arizona, but the magnitude of this crystal surprised me. This very colorful display piece features light teal-blue chrysocolla accented by sparkling, sugary malachite of deep green color, and some bladed primary crystals of chrysocolla itself up on the right side, near the termination. The original crystal measures 7 cm in length and is perched on matrix. Highly unusual, beautiful, and in excellent condition - complete all around!
