Polybasite (Old Comstock Lode region circa early 1900s)
North Belle Isle mine, Tuscarora District, Elko Co., Nevada, USA
Thumbnail, 2.1 x 1.9 x 1.1 cm

Mined in the early 1900's, this thumbnail of Polybasite is exceptional for the locality. It is composed of sharp, hexagonal blades with a silvery-black color and good metallic luster. There is a hint of iridescence, but not as dramatic as from other localities. However, the sharpness and definition of the crystals is what carries the day here. Suffice to say that this old timer is a quality, hard to find location piece. In fact, anything from this era of Nevada history is hard to come by, not only because of age but demand, as well. It happens to also be a very sharp, aesthetic specimen aside from the history bonus!
