Clinomimetite
Johanngeorgenstadt, Erzegebirge, Saxony, Germany
Miniature, 3.6 x 3.1 x 1.6 cm
SOLD
This is one of those ancient classics that you almost never see for sale, they are so legendarily rare on the market! They only come out of old museums. This find dates to the early 1800s, and actually was the TYPE LOCALITY AND TYPE FIND for mimetite as a species. Later science ironically classified these as clinomimetite based on technical details, although Mimetite remained as the famous name of all of its' cousins from other locales. And so, the type locality for mimetite actually instead produced the world's best clinomimetite, unequaled since that time nearly 200 years ago. Attached to an ocherous limonite display matrix is a single, doubly terminated, Lustrous and translucent, lemon yellow crystal of clinomimetite, 1.3 cm in length. This is an aesthetic, balanced specimen with a neat old label.
