Calcite (Dt) With Copper Inclusions
Cliff Mine, Keweenaw County, Michigan, USA
Toenail, 2.9 x 2.0 x 1.4 cm

Certainly, the famous Calcites with Copper are among the most coveted of all Michigan specimens. This thumbnail has so much going for it: color, rich inclusions, perfect shape, and luster. The Calcite itself is gemmy and doubly-terminated, and it is so rich with Copper that it takes on an unusually dark copper-red color hue, only rarely seen (I grew up near there and have seen only a handful of such "red calcites" in my life). This is really quite a choice specimen with excellent aesthetics. Overall, it must be the best such calcite thumbnail for my tastes, that I can recall. It has form, symmetry, color, luster, unusual qualities in the inclusions, and it just lights up in a display case like a little jewel.
