New Find from Mexico

Good specimens of well-crystallized Cuprian Adamite, with brilliant color caused by minute copper content, are quite rare worldwide. Mapimi has produced several pockets of this material over the decades we have known of its specimen production, though always sparsely spaced over the years and in small pockets sparse in quantity. This is the largest pocket of such crystals I know of since the early 1990s, and I can also say with some certainty that the intensity of the color would rank with the top pockets found previously, as well. This offering of about 2 dozen pieces is most of the highgrade from the pocket of some 200 pieces.

These crystals are so unusual in their sharpness, translucency, and color intensity, that some felt the need to have them XRAYED just to be on the safe side. I had these specimens tested at the University of Arizona. Using a powder X-ray diffractometer, Dr. Marcus Origlieri confirmed the initial identification of these crystals as adamite.

Terra-cotta colored limonite is the matrix for a cluster of deeply colored glassy and translucent, emerald-green crystals of cuproadamite, to .8 cm across. The color contrast as well as the difference in texture is incredible in terms of aesthetics and most unusual for the material. The isolation of so many crystals, instead of the usual jumbled look, is also rar ein a piece of this size.

A vuggy, multi layered, ocherous limonite has been filled with rosettes of sparkling, dark lime green cuproadamite crystals of small size but high sugary brilliance. With wonderful contrasting colors and textures, this specimen also gives us a look at a different habit of cuproadamite. In person, the piece would be rotated a bit up and shows more coverage than the photo leads you to believe (i.e. BETTER IN PERSON).

This unusual specimen of cuproadamite has two disparate periods of growth with two separate forms. Initially, botryoids with matte luster and olive green color, to .5 cm across formed in the limonite vug. The later generation of glassy and gemmy, emerald-green cuproadamite, formed on the botryoids, around the rim of the specimen. These crystals reach .5 cm in length. The paragenesis, as well as the disparate habits, is lovely.

The color of this matrix cuproadamite, a lighter-colored but still strong mint-pastel green, suggests it might be from a different pocket than most of the others in this update but we DID see a few of these specimens only, and I suspect they formed at the edges of the pocket as they really are quite distinct, but the odds of two pockets being hit at once are so low I am skeptical. The crystals are glassy and gemmy and reach .2 cm across.
